Recommended Engines for high speed 1/12 (Newbe Question)

I'm looking specifically for an engine to match JK Aerotech's Mig 3 or P51 or for a 1/12 scale racer (like Airkill's Dreadnought or Bearcat).

Please also give info. on engines just above regulation size since I'll be doing a lot of fun flying and I enjoy flying 'overengined' planes (ie .32 in a 1/12). I'm currently looking more for speed than acrobatic torque.

"What better way can you think of to exploit the speed and power of the Russian Norvel .25 than the Mighty Mig 3. Not for the timid, we estimate a solid 80mph plane (this just in: Jim Finch of Redding RC Hobbies clocked our P51 at 91mph with a radar gun flying the Norvel .25). At 2.2lbs, vertical performance is extreme."

So, is Norvel plain-bearing a good engine? I'm told to steer clear of the ball-bearing. What about Enya, Magnum, ThunderTiger, OS etc? I'd like a light weight, but powerful engine. Not a heavy workhorse (like a YS style engine). More like what Enya and Satio are known for.

Which ones are known for their torque, which ones are more 'screamers' (lower torque/higher hp)?

Also,
Any recommendations (or non-recommendations) on 4-strokes in the .30 to .40 range. I'm currently looking at OS, TT, and Saito.

Thanks for helping a Newbe (to this size RC) :D

DrCR,

Of all the planes you mentioned, I can only speak about the AirKill Conquest Bearcat 12th-scale racer. We have 4 people at our club with this plane.

I mentioned in another thread that I race the Bearcat with the OS 25FX and performance pipe. With an apc 8.5x5 prop it gets 18k rpm on the ground for 120 mph.

I recently put an OS 32SX in it and the plane was radar clocked at 150 mph with an 8x7 apc prop. However, this engine is not legal for our 12th scale racing since it exceeds the alloted engine displacement for the wing area, but it is a blast for all-out speed flying!

Jeff Weiss races his prototype Conquest Bearcat with the MVVS 26 and mini-pipe. Another guy has a modified OS25FX (ceramic bearings & OS32SX carb) in his , and I think the fourth plane has a MVVS 21. They are all FAST, but the 32SX is the fastest. It is faster than my 10-sized Shrike with a 32SX!

Here is a pic of mine, plus a pic of the Reno-racer plastic model with the "American Jet" markings I was attempting to make. I think the original full-scale American Jet was retired in 1967.

One shortcoming of the kit is there are no decals included, so I had to make my own.

Steer clear of ball bearings?

Why would you do that-

Either way sounds fun-

For fast sport flying and no rules the OS-32SX will be awesome-
