Extreme Whiplash (Not Whiplash Extreme!)

1 Attachment(s)
Well, the time has come. We've decided to put a Rossi .81 fan engine on the Whip. Esten Spears built the engine, basically an .81 with the same porting as my .65, and with a disk valve induction instead of the drum induction normally found on an .81. The drum valve just would be too hard to mount, and with the disk we can run the big ol' OS carb (it has a bigger bore than the Rossi .81 fan carb).

The .65 was getting right at 21K on a APC 9X8, this engine is getting 20.2K on a 9X9 APC...and it still has more, but that's as short as the pipe can go. I'll cut 1/4" off the pipe and re-tach, but I think it'll fly fine as it is. The pipe isn't too short yet, it's still as easy to set as a sport engine. Running Powermaster YS 20/20 blend...cause I have a lot of it.

When I fly it, it'll have video going so the sound and doppler guys can have some fun. I don't know if it'll do 200 or not, but it ought to be faster than the .65...and that one was pretty fast.

The pipe is a Picco 80 pipe..a lot more volume than a .65 sized pipe, but it was surprisingly long...I shortend over 2" shorter than the Rossi pipe I was running before I got a good gain, and I still think I can get more. First to fly it and see how it performs in the air.

As a side note: Esten and I both realize this isn't going to be a fast plane, per se, just a fast Whip. We both know that all the stuff hanging out carries a drag penalty. We aren't trying for a fast plane, just a fast Whiplash.

And thanks to Esten for building the engine and furnishing the pipe! It's great when you can collaborate on a project and have a little fun doing it!

Can't wait for the vid's-

Should be downright quick though eh?

Was it tought to balance with the big Rossi on there?

Auger and Spears? Sounds like a winner to me-

james
( Putting a simple YS-45 on my Whip- I am such a loser :))

The .81 is lighter than the .65 after the induction was changed from drum to disk.

I should have clarified..the case dimensions are the same...4 mounting screws and one set screw and the engines are completely swapable, takes 5 minutes, the carb and linkage stay with the plane.

Cowl that engine!!!!!
Yeah, yeah. I adressed that point with this:

Trust me, when I build a fast plane, you will not have to worry about cowls or excess drag. There will be no mistake about it.

This is not supposed to be a fast plane (re-read the quote above), if nothing else it's just a fun plane to chunk and listen to the audio.

Yes, definitely [sm=lol.gif] [sm=lol.gif] [sm=lol.gif].

Chuck, cant wait to here and see it. I think that puppy should push 200mph............

Now you got me wanting a Whip. Still debating on the OS46 ducted fan for my DDust or just sell what I have and get a Whip.

OK, I cut the pipe 3/8" and put in a .015" sleeve shim..and got 20.5K. Not much of a gain, and it's getting peaky...just right. I guess that's all it's got. Not bad, within a couple hundred or so of what the .65 was turning the 9X8. Hope to fly it Saturday.

RE: Extreme Whiplash (Not Whiplash Extreme!)

20.5K on a 9x9... should be a winner...

After the plane has flown, will you try some smaller props too? Or do you really need the 9" prop for a Whip?

ChuckAuger 10-07-2003 08:15 PM

RE: Extreme Whiplash (Not Whiplash Extreme!)

Yeah, I don't think an 8" prop would have enough thrust to launch very well. I'll try more pitch though. LHS can't get 9X10's, I'll have to order them from APC.

Off the point a bit but...

I am using Rustoleum Gloss Protective enamel- Is it fuelproof or should I clearcote it?

Don't want too much weight-

Thanks!
james

RE: Extreme Whiplash (Not Whiplash Extreme!)

The Rustoleum I used was mostly fuel resistant..if you didn't leave raw fuel on it, it was fine. I still have the crashed hulk, and the paint is all there!

Chuck,

Is it the stock paint scheme or ... you're an artist ?

Lookin' forward for the vid !!!

RE: Extreme Whiplash (Not Whiplash Extreme!)

A friend of mine PaintChip here on RCU painted it. He's an artist, I'm just the pilot!

His Website has some examples of his work.

Chuck,
Would you mind letting us know the zero fuel weight of your Whip with the .81?
Thanks.

Cool, I don't have any video capture capabilities, I'll just send a video tape.

You bet...
Looks like a hair under 4lbs 14oz with the Picco pipe..I think it was 4lbs 12 oz before

Here is my "shaker can" Whip paint job... The MRS. painted the Kanji letters on the wing and rudder tips-

Tranlated it means: "Disaster prevention"- hope it works!

RE: Extreme Whiplash (Not Whiplash Extreme!)

I could used some of those graphics!!

Not total disaster, but a semi-disaster.

First flight was used up getting it re-trimmed. I had replaced the servo gears, and the trim was off pretty good. That and I was having a hard time getting the mixture set, didn't get much in the way of speed runs on the first flight.

Second flight went off much better, it was hauling the mail. Got what looked a radio hit at one end of the field, and then on the other end of the field got a much harder glitch...and...

The engine came off the front!! I don't know if the glitches were a cause or effect of the engine coming loose. It could have glitched hard enough to snap the engine mounts I guess, or the engine breaking off could have made it look like a hit, I'll never know. One side broke thru the rear mounting bolt hole, but the other side broke where there wasn't a hole.

The plane just floated to the ground without any additional damage. Stripped throttle servo and one vertical fin cracked loose a bit. The engine went at least 200 yards farther!! Maybe more than that, I was amazed at how far it went. This is a large field, some of the guys saw the engine fly off and knew the direction it went, but I just couldn't get over how far it traveled. One guy walked basically right to the plane, one guy found the pipe, and a third guy walked pretty much straight to the engine. The pipe wasn't hurt, and the engine wasn't hurt at all.

PaintChip has some pics of the launch and recovery efforts.

And I got one decent pass over the video camera with the engine in tune...the engine came off right after that. You can hear it on the tape.

Yo Chuck here is a few of the decent pic I got.....
1. The first pic is the launch...This is how you properly launch a Whiplash....hehe almost straight up!
2. The second pic is how you don't land a whiplash.:D Chuck it seems a little tail heavy.
3. The third pic you can see where the motor mounts sheared off.[:-]
4. Finally the 4th pic a little post crash humor and fun. One thing you can say about the crash monger is we always have a good time at the crash site....
