Wheel size for patriot XL

Hello,

I am at the point where I am going to make the wheelweels. Is the correct size for the main wheels 2 1/4" or 2 1/2"? What have people been using?

Thanks,

Le fou

Le Fou:

You are not telling us the size or type of airframe. Since you are in the speed forum, assuming a q-500 or similar, a 2 1/4 thin racing wheel seems standard and ok for any 40 sized airplane. If you fly off a grass field, the larger wheel would be better, although I doubt if you will find any.

I had one of these..... try to get the largest front wheel that you can fit since the ground clearance for the prop is small and taking off from a grass field causes you to "cut the grass"!!!

I remember trying to get the longest length that I could at the nosewheel strut so the friont of the plane would get even more ground clearance. Once in the air, it flies nice, mine had the flap option that made landings easier in 0 wind conditions

rmenke,

I guess that I forgot to put in the text that it is for a patriot xl from GP but it was in the subject title. Anyway, I read a post stating that if one uses 2 1/2" size main wheel, the plane would have a hard time rotating. I wanted to get the opinion of those that have a patriot xl.

Thanks,

2 1/2 main wheels. 2 1/4 nose

I'm using 2 1/2 on the mains and 2 1/4 on the front. I needed the clearance so i made the front strut a little longer and opened the wheel well all the way back to the firewall. If you're going with 2 1/2 on the main you'll need to open up the wheel wells a little to prevent rubbing.
