Engine for the Lanier Shrike 40?

Suggestions, please! :)

I currently have a Magnum XLS 46; Webra 50 GT; a MDS .61 FIRE; K&B .65 in my inventory as potential candidates. I'm open to other engines to purchase as well.

Thanks!

On mine I've had OS 40, Tower .40 both with a pipe, the pipe didn't make it any faster, but it did help vertical performance. I've also had a K&B 45 on it, which was a real disappointment, I'd use the MDS .61 FIRE engine myself.

My Shrike has three tails I wanted to have rudder control, I don't know if you can see the third fin, but it's in the pile! Most guys never explore the Shrike's slow speed handling which is really great.

Yes, I see the rudder. :D

I just remembered I also have a Super Tigre 51.

That's a nice pile of planes! [sm=thumbup.gif]

To have really impressive speed, you need to put an engine in it that starts with the letters J-E-T-T ;)

The Shrike does have a thick chord to overcome (my Dust with the same engine as my Shrike 40 was markedly faster), thus a Jett .50 or Jett .60 LX would be ideal (if it doesn't break the wallet) :D

MDS fire? Seriously? I was not aware they made one of those...

Shrike-10 with an OS-32SXor Jett BSE-35

or

Shrike-40 with a Jett-60LX.

Of the engines you have on hand, the Webra caught my eye first---

RE: Engine for the Lanier Shrike 40?

Yes, I have read on here that the Dust is faster. That's okay. I do not need the fastest of the fast. Just fast enough for these old eyes. :D

Besides, (entirely subjectively) I think the Shrike is a better looking aircraft from an aesthetic point of view.

Razor, I will take a pic of that MDS FIRE .61 for you. I have heard that you gotta speak to it in Russion or it won't run. :)

A JETT huh? [sm=greedy.gif]

The Shrike is better looking than the DD IMHO* I really prefer the Whip to both because it is "paintable".

M= Motor
D= Doesn't
S= Start

Good night folks!

The Shrike is defintely easier to see in flight. Those large vertical stabilizers are easy to see at a distance. I remember when I first flew my Shrike, it made me feel that I was flying a mini-Hot Spot jet :D

RE: Engine for the Lanier Shrike 40?

The Webra 50 - add either a Jett-Stream or Ultra-thrust to it... the engine will really come alive.

Next would be the Mag 46. Same thing - get a tuned exhaust for it, and it will run well.

Either of the above two engines with a 9x7 or 8.8x8.5 prop.

The ST 51 would work well too.

Skip the bigger engines you listed. The Shrike is a b_tch to balance even with a .40 on it.

I have an older Jett Quickie motor that would make it go... PM if you're interested.

Thanks Bob!

But........

What about in another thread, you mentioned shortening the firewall .250" - .375"? Just to satisfy my curiosity, would that work for a piped MDS .61? I mean, if guys are putting .46's on a Shrike 10, why not a 1.20 on a Shrike 40? :D J/K

Anyways, I was looking at a Rossi .40 on a pipe too. Local guy here is Rossi USA.

RE: Engine for the Lanier Shrike 40?

The rossi 40 is a good option too. Pretty good value. In that case, consider moving the firewall back just a bit.

The MDS 61 is not much of an RPM engine. It runs well, and is a good engine, but I think they way it is designed its not the best engine of the list, for this particular job.

Razor-RCU 06-14-2006 01:31 PM

RE: Engine for the Lanier Shrike 40?

The Rossi is a bit heavy as Bob eludes to above (Mini-tuned pipe is a solid option)... VERY powerful and runs happily on 0-5% nitro.

I am not familiar with the MDS but I would bet it generates its power at lower rpm's meaning you would need to prop it as such, and that much torque could be a problem on a small W/S bird.

I have never had an MDS or Shrike so maybe I should just shut up... :D

The Shrike ARF is on sale at Tower for $124-

RE: Engine for the Lanier Shrike 40?

Yeah, the MDS is probably a pattern plane moteur. I have a poker in the fire right now, might be a good option. ;)

RE: Engine for the Lanier Shrike 40?

We have .40 Shrikes here with MVVS .40, .50, OS .61 FIRE ducted fan motor, and one with a Tower .75. To be honest they all fly very well, none are as fast as a Dust or Magnum and the heavier motors were a ***** to balance. Of the choices the Webra gets my vote and as Bob said put a pipe on it. It'll be a pretty good daily speed plane....

I've got a Jett Quickie a comin' for it now. :D

Maybe I will just swap motors like underwear. :)

Just looking at Lanier's website. This picture of the Shrike 40 definitely has an HP 40 Gold Cup in the nose. I wonder what the engine/muffler weighed?

RE: Engine for the Lanier Shrike 40?

I found the weight over on MECOA:

HP.40F SPECIFICATIONS
Engine Weight: 9.4 oz
Muffler Weight: 3.6 oz

RE: Engine for the Lanier Shrike 40?

The HP gold cup 40 was a real nice, light-weight engine. About the same weight at the old K&B 40 8011 engines.

We use to cram those into the Hirobo Shuttle (old blue one) :)

I've got the 40 Shrike in the build pile and a YS45 rear exhaust for it. Does anyone know what size screws it uses for the header pipe?
Thanks, MikeB

RE: Engine for the Lanier Shrike 40?

The Webra 50. Like Bob said it comes out wicked nose heavy even with a 40. plan on installing battery and receiver as far back as possible.

One note when installing the verticl fins, make sure you leave the fuselage hatch off so that you can distinguish the top from bottom. Somebody I know left it on and glued the fins upside down:eek:

That guy noticed the goof about 15miutes into 30 minute epoxy and got lucky.:D
