Anyone use car engines?
 

Just wondering if anyone uses .12-.18 buggy engines for speed planes? I was going to build a couple speed planes and just wonder which engines people use. I have a Picco .15 here but I have to figure out how to get a prop and spinner on it to clear the carb, I think an O.S. may be better. Wonder what props to use and how fast you can get them to fly a plane!

i have used a .15 with a full length pipe and i was using 6x5 apc but probably going smaller on diameter and more pitch would get more speed if your plane was sleek enough

Which engine did you use and was there any issues fitting the prop/spinner on? Was it fast?

Anyone use the Novarossi FX15CMP engine and pipe.... good/fast? $140 for engine and $199 with pipe and manifold, would this be a good combo to design my planes around and would it be popular? I still want to design a delta and Magnum type plane for an engine like this and I'm sure I could offer the engines cheaper if bought with a plane combo. I just don't want a fast engine.... I want REALLY fast.... TOO fast!

That engine will not work because it has a pilot shaft, the trick is to find an engine that has a regular threaded shaft and is long enough to fit a prop and spinner, still looking for the perfect engine.

You also need the prop to clear the carb!

Would it be difficult to machine an adapter? Also, at 35K you have to pay attention to what prop you would use that would not overload the engine and not go supersonic at the tips. This would reduce the efficiency.

An adapter would not be hard to make but you just have to make sure you have enough shaft thread to put a nut on it to hold everything on, I am going to go down to the hobby shop here and look at the engines they have. Prop selection is another thing but should not be a problem to find... I think! We just need people to start trying different engine/prop combo and post results so we can find the best combo or combos that work.

Here are two planes I designed that I would like to do smaller for the .15's! These ones were for my O.S. .32SX and pipe.... crazy fast! My small delta will be cleaner with the rear exhaust engines and fiberglass and the "Lykajet" type plane will also be cleaner and pipe inside... fiberglass fuse, foam wings.

I wouldn't pay much attention to the car engine ads if I were you... I mean, every engine seems to have 10 or 20 % more power than the last one... By now they should have arrived at 30 hp from a .21 engine :eek: A few more years and you will be going for groceries in your .21 powered Chevy :D
