I just bought and received a Nitro Planes SWOLLOW JET, I would like some feed back if anybody flys one. I have a new JETT .46 for it, looks very nice and not cheaply assembled, any info would be great!

It will be quick, but will not be extremely fast. Thick wing.

Likely fly along the lines of a Vortex.

Page notes 3 channels - but the plane clearly has a rudder and steerable nose gear ???

Who knows .... sometimes we just buy an airframe and figure it out later.

Nice lines - they should offer it with the CORRECT size control surfaces - I bet it would be fun with a good .46 in the nose.

Its a straight copy of a Weston UK model. There a few guys on here that have the originals, so they should be able to help with the way they fly.

You would think these ARF guys would realize that by now :)

But of course, it takes a bit of though and engineering to design the plane properly - and I think too many of these 'designers' have fogotten how to install a nose gear retract - if it aint a tail dragger, they do not offer it with retracts.

I received these photos recently. Owner tells me the first flight was a handful - CG was a bit too far back. Not sure if the CG in instructions was wrong (like that would be a surprise ??) No further update though.

Last night I checked the CG at 420mm, no way is this right its just to nose heavy, I have been down this road before and if I use that CG mark the aircraft will be too heavy and be a little scary to fly. So my question, what is the math to find the right CG for a delta wing aircraft?

Maybe try this and see where your measured CG comes out in terms of % ahead of NP as a start.

Why not leave the landing gear off? I was considering putting landing gear (retracts) on my latest plane a Laser Arrow, but after flying it a couple of times I am conviced a fast plane ( or a plane you want to go fast ) should have no landing gear. You could add retracts but it will add weight and postpone you giving us a flight report. If you did decide to leave of the landing gear, put a skid plate or fin on the bottom made of 1/4 ply.

Hi Bill,

I am in the boat, well, airplane. I just received the Fly Swallow Jet 46. Have you received any good feedback. My question to you and all the other RC experts out there is this: The Swallow advertisement calls for a 2 stroke .46 - .60. The manual calls for, if I remember correctly, .46 - .50. The plane weighs 5.5 lbs. I was thinking of putting an O.S. FX .61 engine on her. Is this engine too big for the plane. Another alternative might be the new O.S. AX .55.

Any feedback on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Bill,
I'm the guy with the Swallow, the same one shown in the two pictures from Bob Brassell. Here's a progress report:

My set-up is a Jett 60L with the red muffler.

The CG as listed in the book is definately wrong. Nitro now says a better CG is the point where the wing takes a different angle. I tried it first where the book calls out and had to use about 7 oz weight in the tail. Tried it again later at the revised CG point (with about 2 oz in the tail) and it was much better, but it still was not a good handling plane. Certainly no fun to fly. It took way too much UP elevator (reflex) just to fly level. So maybe it should have more tail weight?

I'not an airplane designer which, of course, is why I fly ARF's. I do know this plane is not sorted out. It needs a lot more work before it can be built and flown as advertised. All that leads me to wonder if it can ever be made to fly properly. I've never heard of anyone who has been successful. Then again, the plane is new and/or there could be many people out there having great fun with the Swallow. I'm just not one of them.

Hi Arthur,

Well I flew my Swollow so here we go! CG 360mm LE of wing no added weight, rossi .40 Mac's tuned pipe 4"3/8"s on the header, 9x7 zinger wood prop 10% nitro 15,510 RPM's. Flight #1 nose heavey and used up all my transmiter trim, landing was hot but not bad. Flight #2 fixed trim by turning elevator rods, went up 2 clicks up on elevator trim and level flight, aircraft was fling sweet, 30% expo everywhere. This plane will never be a Q500 but I had alot fun flying it and it will go faster every time I put it in the air.

I will be watching this thread closely. These models are new in Australia, but man they are cheap (inexpensive not poor quality) I can get one for $170 Ozzie dollars. I have the Pitts special. It's good. I may never build again.[sm=lol.gif]

Any more info on this plane? Do you guys know the exaclty CG balance point? Who else is flying this plane?
