the unbelieveable speed with a Weston Magnum
Hey
Well I just got here a while back as in last weekend from flying my first Magnum with a Magunm.46w/performance pipe with well this is hard to believe this bu um..... I have a 10x6 AirMasterscrew on there. Thoughs of you know what I'm talking about, the reason I put one on there is that the durability is better than an APC prop on landings. But My dad bought a "Radar Gun"off of Ebay .ts a cop one that from the late 70's an thoughs cost about 1grand apeice .But got it for $150. Well the prop was flexable you know how thous props are well the prop sounded like it was hiting super sonic but its not really. Well I told my dad to go somewhere around 500ft. Well in that dive I clocked !!126MPH!!.......An I'm like !!WOW!! thats hard to ' believe. An the funny thing about it was its not even @ its Maximum speed that was just a dive. Well thats all for know. O an one more thing. Is it just me or so far as the body styail of the Magnum and the Patroit look kinda alike in some ways as in one EX. the wing looks like a Patroit's wing |

Now that is an impressive speed with a 10x6 prop. Try 9x9, 8x9, etc and really get some fast flying. If you mount the prop so it is horizontal when the engine is off, broken props aren't an issue and you can probably go faster with an APC prop. Hans

That old dog of a 46 and a MA, im surprise you got anywhere close to that. you NEED a APC and practice landing so you dont break props, the prop should stop just past flat, so if the grass wants to push it back up a little it can. Stop using it if you see white stress cracks on the front near the hub. I'd check the gun is ok too, drive along the road and point it at signs to check its about same as your cars speedo.
the 46 wont like much more than a 8x8 |
the unbelieveable speed with a Weston Magnum
Its not like I break props. I have a spinner on there. An I have
over 80 APC props.but That prop was just for first starters. An far the radior is almost as go as new.m Also you can hear the doppler shift. what about an APC 8x9? |
the unbelieveable speed with a Weston Magnum
your a braver man than I, i wouldnt dare put a MA on an engine that quick. at least you wouldnt catch me standaing anywhere near it.
the radio is almost as good as new? i would hope so..... you could hear doppler shift at any speed, hell, you could hear it as it deadsticked past you... |

Just whate untile I get my "GRRT".LOL. Then we can bore a hole
in the sky. |
the unbelieveable speed with a Weston Magnum
got one, doing same thing, wont be as quick as a West 50.. ect ect
|
the unbelieveable speed with a Weston Magnum
Actually there about the same . The GRRT @ first will do
21000rpms out of the box with an 8x5 APC . Well my dads modified GRRT will do 23000rpms with an 8x5 APC. |
the unbelieveable speed with a Weston Magnum
and the West will do 21k in standard form with a 8x9.
a 5" pitch wont get you far, i'd rather have a 7x9 at 21k over a 8x5 and just hope it can get away on takeoff. The GRRT has one advantage, but that also makes it alot harder to fit, tum de tum, ummmm laa laa laa |
the unbelieveable speed with a Weston Magnum
Also the GRRT is also lighter than the west .51. Yeah I know but I
all ready have that under control. |
the unbelieveable speed with a Weston Magnum
a MDS 15 is much lighter and that does 21k...
you realise the GRRT is meant to be nearer 30k.... be interesting to see pics of how you mount the GRRT, i've not measureed up yet so its all in my head |
the unbelieveable speed with a Weston Magnum
O yeah. I mean I'm just telling you what it's doing right out of the
box. Its still breaking in to. My dad's only ran about half a gallon through it. The power prop is an APC 7.2x8.3 . the speed prop is an APC 7.2x8.6 Also it might put out 21k. But the factor is, how much pull does it allow you to have. If ya know what I mean. |

The disk area does make a difference you have to have enough prop to get air flow and enough pitch to get the speed you want. I have heard these plans can go over 200mph that is fantastic!!

Try the .40 GRRT FAI Pylon rear intake and exhaust. It is used with a direct clip on header. This is the one I have and it really hauls. On the ground I can tac at 24,100 with a APC 7.2 X 8.6
Of coarse it was shaved on tips to get up the pipe. One thing about this engine is that it takes a bit more rpm to get on pipe. I think it is around 17,000 to 18,000. I think it has been a while since i put it on tac and flown it. One reason is there is no adjustment of header-pipe length due to the direct clip on. I think you will really be pleased with this engine set up. Here is the link to it. http://morrishobbies.com/product_inf...8d0c489cc70933 and here is the pipe for it. http://morrishobbies.com/product_inf...b89c430d341337 |

one more thing to keep in mind is that this engine is set up with a WOT venturi and no carb. The carb is separate.
|
the unbelieveable speed with a Weston Magnum
OK I have a ?ion for you. What are the differences between the
the normal GRRT, and the F.I.A.? O an my dad already has the rear carb on there. |
the unbelieveable speed with a Weston Magnum
honestly I am not to sure. This is just the one I chose to get.
I looked on the website and checked out the specs and they were equal. But I did notice that the FAI did not require a header before the pipe and had a round exhaust with it. On the other GRRT they had a regular exhaust and required a header to attach to the pipe. The only reason I went ahead and got the FAI is because I liked the round exit for exhaust. To me i figured it would have a better flow and would work a little better. Even though on the website is shows the same specs. So this is why i went ahead and went with the GRRT FAI version instead. The only thing is since it does not have a header you cannot adjust the length to rpm's. The pipe is a direct bolt on setup. I have been using this engine for a while on my DD and am very pleased with its performance. It really screams and going from a .46 sport engine to this is a huge difference once on pipe. |
the unbelieveable speed with a Weston Magnum
yay, i have the FAI version :D
i've got both types of carb, thinking about boring out a throttle version... bear with me.. if i just drilled out the middle it would work fine till i tried to close it, the idle stop will stop it way before its closed, IF i made the slot longer it would compleatly screw up the bottom end mixture becasue it would move too much, however... if i take the end of the slot and carry it on around the body in a straight line it will close and the bottom end needle will stay in the same place. Correct or no? OK non throttle will be quicker, but for first flights that scares the pants off me 7.2x8.6 hey... wish we could get those sizes over here.. had to convince the LHS to stock the 8x9, he brought one bag, lasted 30 mins, he stocks them now |
the unbelieveable speed with a Weston Magnum
i had to order those props directly from APC. They sent me the full catalog of the props they have so it is easy to pic the one i want and order it. They have a website at www.apcprop.com
try that out and select the props you want.... I also ordered some carbon fiber props but have not yet tried it. I will wait until the weather warms up before trying them out.I am to paranoid about my covering exploding off my wing with the cold temperatures we are having. also the WOT venturi is much larger than the carb..... I have not used the venturi to see how it runs but with the larger intake in is almost the exact size as the exhaust. The carb I have is the Q500 which is the same one that fits on the .77 and up engine.. from what I have been told. |
the unbelieveable speed with a Weston Magnum
its runs, OH it runs, we had a DF fan on it the other day, wanted to see if we could get it over 20k to use for a fast DF, 20k.... easy, not sure where it was because there was no taco, but it was the fastest its ever ran.
it used to be in a fast delta with a 8x10 prop, alomst equal in speed to a £250 Jett 50 in a SAS Star Delta. Anyone know of any reason boring out one of my carbs wont work? thought about it for my PSQ 40, that carb is too small for a Dust |
the unbelieveable speed with a Weston Magnum
phillybaby I don't blame you for not wanting to fly without a throttle especially on early flights when you are getting to know and make friends with a new plane.
