OSFX46 - Best Pipe for Money
 

I'm looking for a pipe, I realize that the FX isn't a super powerfull motor but can someone suggest the best "bang for the buck"?

I've been looking at the MACS pipes both one piece and 2, (whats the difference performance wise)

Any other suggestions? I don't intend on spending over 100.00 for it.

60 bucks for a Jett Stream, only a few hundred RPM less then a full length pipe and it's simple bolt on and fly.

Brian,

Dont sell the .46FX short.... the engine does perform nicely, expecially when you install the tuned exhaust system.

As noted, the jett-stream (image attached) or ultra-thrust mufflers represent a very simple, bolt on tuned exhaust solution. You get an immediate 1000-1400 rpm increase (depending on the prop and the application). Quick, easy, simple, relatively inexpensive.

MACs offers a pre-tuned system for the OS46. #1943 is what you are looking for

That system is set up for general sport use, with a 9x7 or 10x6 prop - typically around 16,000 rpm

If you want a long tuned pipe, the "pre-tuned" Mac's pipe looks good. ;)

There is nothing wrong with the FX, especially with a red tuned muffler attached :)

I would not mind getting an older SF and FSR all with the jett Stream and running some tach. numbers.. ;)

The Mac's (black) one piece muffler's performance is about the same as the stock muffler. It's a good replacement for a lost or broken stock muffler.
The Mac's pre-tuned system for tune-ability, transition and max power. For compact size and very good power the Jett or Ultrathust.

Thanks for all the reponses guys, it's appreciated. I was given a jaw dropper question today when discussing the tuned pipes, noise. When you factor this into the equation do the top choices remain the same? Is there additional silences available for these pipes to reduce noise but maintain power?

the Jett Stream is relatively the same as the stock muff just a different pitch. the 4 stroke full length pattern pipes ($$$) are very quiet but I've not heard a 2 stroke one that was anything to write home about.

the cheapest performance add on is the tower .46 muffler. about 750 rpm with the same prop.

Macs 1 pc muffler black got me 500-700 rpm and saved about an ounce of weight.

A good muffled or "quiet" pipe will be quieter than ANY of the stock exhauts provided by manufactureres with their engines (with the same size prop, at the same or similar rpm, on the same engine)

The jett-stream mufflers are quieter than the majority of stock mufflers, with the same prop, running at the same rpm, on the same engine.

The catch here is....

Keeping the same prop, you will gain 1500 rpm. That is the goal here. With the rpm gain, you end up with more prop noise and a different exhaust note.

So in general, for the jett-stream, it ends up being a net-zero wash, or the the resulting higher power combination may be a db or three louder due to the prop noise and additional energy being expended. Very hard to quantify, because there are so many variables changing at once.

The full size muffled tuned pipes will result in about the same situation.

The full size quiet pipes will tend to be quite a bit quieter - so you will end up quieter than you started in most cases because it does a superior job on the engine exhaust note. But there is a trade for added size, weight and complexity - and the prop tip noise is still a significant player. So with more rpm, the quiet will go away.

Can you tell me which is the lenght to get max. rpm in a O.S. .46 FX with the mac 1943 Pre Tuned Exhaust System?

They call for 3.375" measured from the front of the header mounting plate along the length of the header tube but this is for a O.S. .46FS.

hey bob, what plane was that pictured. for my money the jett muffler is the way to go. plus the red color lets people know you have a high performance jett muffler on your plane.

Looks like a "Sonic" to me, but I am pretty rusty...

I would not typically spend $60 on an OS-46FX muffler/pipe but it would be a pretty good combo. In fact I think the FX responds better to these than the AX. Find an FSR and look out-

I have used the aforementioned Tower muffler a LOT and I usually get about 600-800rpm's for $14 bucks. :D

I did buy a UT muffler for my K&B-48 which seems like it could have been a waste, until I ran it. LOL AWESOME!

I have a Jett-Stream muffler from my SJ-50 that you (or anyone) can have but the holes seem to be inlarged a bit...

If you are buying the pre-tuned system, do not mess much with it. I believe it comes tuned for 16,000 - 16,500 rpm.

Use it as is.... and use prop-selection to optimize the setup instead of trying to trim the header down much more.

Generally it is set for the OS to turn a 10x6 in that range. So use that as a reference. Anything from a 9x7 to 9x9 would be good for a speed setup.

I put one on an OS .40Fx and it turns a 9-7 at 16,200 ....not bad. ;)
