Radar Gun

Hi:
Our club is looking at radars guns. Has anyone had experience with this one?

I just worry that it is not expensive enough (good enough) for picking up RC planes. We would place it on a tripod for saftey as it will record and save multi passes.

thanks, Dave

This one has been working really well for our club but I don't think it offers the tripod option. I would say the one in your link would certainly be a winner comparing options of the two.

We had one at our club a couple years back. It's still around but no fun to use. A real PITA. I can't remember what brand it is but I assumed with the radar guns that you could aim it in the general direction of the plane. Not this stupid thing. You have to be virtually flying through the lense for it to pick up the plane. real aggravating, so its been in the closet.

something to consider......

get something that has good field of view, and also can support a remote numerical display.

I have the Bushnell gun linked above. Does not work that well unless the plane is close enough to hit you before it can pick up the speed. I wouldn't dare trying to clock my 120mph propjet with the thing.

Looks like a Radar Gun and a Temp Gauge are tops on the list of "sucker buys"[sm=bananahead.gif]

Mount it on a tripod and strap the trigger closed with a velcro strap. You can use a spotting scope from a safe distance, or just walk up to it after each pass. You will have to rig the mount for the radar gun. It was $75 at Radio Shack.
Be safe,

All of the cheaper guns are junk if you are trying to clock anything fast. I use the prospeed and it works great up to about 250mph. After that, it starts to miss passes. I think they go for about 600 bucks. The next step up would be the stalker pro which seems to catch passes consistently up to 300mph, but has trouble after that. I hear some of the slope guys are talking to them about modifiying the gun to catch 300+mph for those really fast days. If you watch this vid...you can see that its catching 300mph passes at a good distance.
