need advice on speed engine

i have a little plane called a pride & joy that runs great on a OS heli 37, or it did till the engine case busted in flight. it was turning a apc 9-6 prop at 17700 rpm on the ground, i don't know if that is good for a 37 due to not having anything to compare it to. i woud like to replace the engine with the fastest engine in the 36 size class but i don't know which to go with. i know you speed freaks know what i need so let me have it please.

well, a 36 is so close to a 40 you might as well consider it that same class, that being said, if you want to go REALLY fast, get a Nelson 40, depending on the airframe though it might be to draggy to take advantage of the Nelson's high RPM. In that same basic physical size though there is the JETT 50, West 50, OS 46DF, etc, there are lots of very fast RPM engines, and as long as the airframe is clean they'll move it out very well.

I think that most of the .32-.36 engines are really bored out .25's, so they are very light weight compared to any of the .40 sizes. Of course if you really want power in that size, Nelson makes a very light (about 9 oz.) combat motor (but without carburator or muffler) or Jett .35 which has both.

Am I the only one that does not know what a "Pride and Joy" is? Any pics?

a gentleman from the sikeston mo club has been building and flying them for a long time so only people close to my area have seen them most likely. i will try to post some pics later.

here are a couple pics of the pride & joy for you guys. it's a cool little plane and a blast to fly.

i think i am going to try a thunder tiger pro 36 with header and pipe and see what i can get out of it. i wanted a webra but they are hard to find.

RR:

Have yet to find anything out there in a better overall engine than the Jett 35, regardless of size. Just love this little guy. Great idle, transition and high rpm. Mine dominated open class club racing here for years (6) and is still scooting strong, although replaced by "the king" Jett 60LX in a more agressive airframe. I know that Dave Norman has one and loves it almost as much as I do, wonderful little engine that flat scoots and runs foreaver. Look for 18-19,000 with a little more prop.

a tt36 will spin an apc 9-6 ~15500 on stock muffler... 18000 with a macs noisy pipe

i looked at the jet 35 and would love to give it a try but thats a bunch of $$ to just play around. that being said if the TT 36 on a header and pipe won't keep up with the other guys flying the P & Js i will be willing to spend more. i hate being out run [:@]

RE: need advice on speed engine

think of the jett 35 price as if you are getting 2 engines.. because it will outlast 2+ normal engines, and make tons of power.. that being said the TT36 is a potent little engine for the price, not a jett 35, but strong. and that 18k number is with 10% omega @720' asl (indianapolis) typical summer day 80 degrees and humid. there is little more there to have with better pipe tuning and more nitro, but probably not much more .

.it has been a while but i had one that i ran 15% in and i thought i was getting around 18000 with a header and pipe. i was not sure if i remembered it right or not, i hate getting older.

ok i didn't go with the 36TT i got the TT 39 heli engine. there are several people running then not far from me and they seem to think they do better than the 36 airplane engine. i installed it yesterday and ran some fuel through it. i hope to fly it this week end and finish breaking it in. i will try to get tack readings to report, i don't realy know what to expect.

ok i got several flights on the P&J and the tt 39 heli motor, so far so good i think. on 25% nitro and a apc 9-6 prop i was getting 17400 rpm's. the engine only has 6 or 7 tanks of fuel through her so i think it will get better and the mousse can pipe i'm running may not be exactly right yet. what do you guys think?

Here’s a comparison between two new engines I did a while back. A TT 39 and OS 32 were mounted in a test stand for break-in. After 48 oz of 15/18 Powermaster in each engine. Note that the Thunder Tiger 39 pro Heli’s head's fins have been turned round/smaller and a prop dive plate added. I would expect both engine will make more power with more time on them. Both engines will reliably idle at 3,000 RPM. Both with an OS #8 plug, using the same Mac's pre-tuned header (cut 1/4" shorter than supplied) and Quiet pipe kit. RPM backed off 200 from peak. Here are some results.
OS 32 SX 15% nitro
16,500 with 9X6 APC
17,700 with 8X8 APC
TT 39 Pro heli 15% nitro
17,100 with 9X6 APC
18,200 with 8X8 APC
TT 39 on 30/20 Powermaster heli fuel VERY THIRSTY!
16,700 with 9X7 APC
17,500 with 9X6 APC
18,700 with 8X8 APC
The mousse can pipe pictured was tried and adjusted but it could not peform to the level of the tuned pipe, the results were not kept.

thanks fast, that was the #'s i was looking for. i hope to get the pipe working better and a little more nitro soon.

RE: need advice on speed engine

i had a chance to try the 8-8 APC and 30% nitro, it turned 18,400 on the ground. it seemed to be moving pretty fast but the guy with the radar didn't show up today so maybe we can find out how fast it is some other day. so far i'm happy with the set up but it still needs some work tuning the pipe.
