Disappointed from ducted fan jets, looking into a fast prop :)
 

Hi all,

I love speed, but I'm a bit disappointed by ducted fan jets. They are just too slow for their promises. I owned a Mirage 2000, that should be fast with such a big brushless motor it had, but it did not deliver what it promised.

I am looking into buying a fast prop plane, could you please recommend me one? I'm a bit lost over what I should buy.

If you could also give me a link to an online store, I'd be grateful!

I dont know if you like the deltas if so , you can buy an nice , fast and great performance delta designed by Mike Connors "Screamin Demon " dont know how fast you are looking for , but I bet this beby with a correct choose of engine will do feel you a little nervous :D

Thanks Speedboy. By some research I also found the Multiplex Funjet at a good price. Do you think it will endure this kind of speed or break midair?

if the ducted fan wasnt fast then didnt have enough power and/or ducting was all wrong. if your talking about the hobby lobby mirage then its gonna be slow. goto electric jet factory or look at bei jets they go fast some are around 200mph in electric form.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the same motor on a ducted fan jet would produce less thrust than if it was mounted on a prop plane, right?

Well I dont know still what kind of speed you want to reach , but if you are thinking in 100 mph range I think it will endure , at least this video make me think that ;)

So you are disappointed by ELECTRIC ducted fan jets? A glow DF with the proper fan-unit can hit 185+ easily.

The electric ducted fans have more power than the best of the ol glow powered setups. BVM now offers their Viofan on 16S which is over 20lbs of thrust. That is well over 5000 watts and pushing up around 7hp. I think the best of of the glow motors on the pipe, perfect tunning, within a super narrow RPM range was peaking out near 5hp. Also, the newer fan designs are far more effecient than the old stuff.

There are fast EDF's out there but you have to be willing to spend the money. A trick 160-180mph EDF setup like an El Bandito, Vector II, Electra, etc are going to cost you some real money. $1700+ I suppose you can probably get a Jepe F-16 EDF going for about $1200 that will do 160+.

However, I have seen this plane http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/107312.asp which is a glorified remolded beer cooler with a hair dryer in it doing about 120ish with the right power system and fan. Probably going to be your best bet on a budget EDF. With the included el cheapo power system it does ~60-70mph.

If you want to go really fast, a carbon n' glass molded F5D pylon racer, lipo-brushless powered, is impossible to beat for the money. Probably the cheapest way to crack an honost 200 without knowing how to build your own airframes. Flying planks can be built cost effectively as well using any power source. You can put a Jett or Nelson Q40/Q500 motor, or similar power electric system, on a $100 Quickie and do about 155ish. All up cost will be somewhere around $600-700.

Anyway, about a thousand ways to meet your goal. Just depends on what you like to fly and how fast you want to go.

First off, which EDF plane did you have and what power system was in it? I had a Jepe Pyranha with a 800W setup in it and it would easily do 120MPH.

The cheapest and simplest thing to do would be take your EDF motor, ESC, battery and radio gear and drop them into a molded pylon racer. There are several that cost less than $200 for the airframe. Check out Esprit Models or NSP for some good examples.

No matter how fast a ducted fan design is, the same power driving a prop will always be faster on the same size model.
