Shrike 40 Speed Delema!!!
 

OK guys I have a BIG problem!!!

I am currently building two Lanier 40 Shrikes, one for me and one for a buddy of mine.


Heres the problem. He is going to be running a Jett 50 sport engine in his and I need to make sure my plane turns out a heck of a lot faster than his!!!

I am building both airframes to be identical, so the only variable will be the engine!!!


I have been considering a Quickie 500 engine or perhaps a 46-50 size engine.

I need ideas and information. So far I have found several good quickie 500 engines such as Jett, Rossi, Nelson.



What else is out there that can leave my buddy behind?

Go with a Jett 60 LX. The quickie 500 motors like to rev at high rpm with a pylon prop and the Shrike has a bit too much drag to realy haul with that kind of prop.
The 60 and a sport prop that Jett recomends for your setup would be quickest.

The only thing faster is a Nelson, how much $$$ do you have?

The fusaloge is to narrow to fit a 60 size motor with out modifing. I built a shrike with YS-61. I had to spread the fuse side an extra 3/8 of an inch to fit the motor mount in. I did make a lot of mods to the plane but it flew very well and was in the 150 mph range.

The Jett 60LX is a 40 size case. It's not going to be that much faster than the Jett 50 though from all that I've read.

A retired Jett 428 engine, or a Nelson 428 engine might give you the edge over the sport jett 50. A few good values to be found if you find the "right" used engine and that engine has been well cared for. I urge caution buying any used performance engine.

As for the match-up - It all depends on the setup when it comes down to it.

A SJ-50 with the race muffler will tend to run similar to the 428 racing engine. Maybe just a bit shy.

The SJ-60LX will typically outperform the 428 engine on a 8.8x8.75 prop.

A JETT FIRE-50 or FIRE 60LX with the full pipe can be set up to outperform the 428 engine on the same 8.8x8.75 prop. And it will have a throttle, and remains user friendly.

Right now I have been leaning towards the Jett BSE 50 or 60 with the rear exhaust and a tuned pipe. I would just like to know more about that matchup!?.

What about a fuel system (the bubbless tanks)?

Also why did you angle the tail of your second shrike in?

Those are not my aircraft. Just examples of what other Jett owners have built.

The fin angle was just for "cool" purposes only.

If you are seeking top performance, I would recommend the FIRE 50 engine, nitro pipe, and have Dub add the LX timing. Runs pretty much the same as the 60LX, but will be easier to operate in the long run. Use the 8.8x8.75 prop (about 19K rpm setup). Dub can provide the entire setup tested, tuned and ready for its final break-in. That is the setup shown on the RE photo belonging to Zach Dempsey. That aircraft owner was quite happy with the resulting aircraft performance. [&:]

Using a bubble tank is highly recommend, but is not 100% necessary. If you have the tank padded well a regular tank is ok. But the bubble tank gives you a bit of run-time advantage since you can use all of the fuel in the tank without risk of a lean run as fuel runs low.

BSE or cast case your choice. No real performance different. Comes down to personal preference.

I get a comfortable 110mph out of a TT46pro and 9/7 apc. Flys good.

I don't think a racing engine like the Nelson will do that well on a Shrike, it's such a draggy airplane. I had one built with an OS91VRDF set aside for it. I don't remember having to widen the fuse at all for that set up. I ended up flying it with an OS61FX first and then a Leo 46 for testing the engine (piece of crap engine, worked great for about 25 flights, then it wouldn't needle at all).
The OS91VRDF with pipe fit, I did end up lengthening the nose but as I say, I don't remember having to widen the fuse anywhere.
