Slightly OT but relevant to this crowd..
 

Hi folks,

I have a nearly finished Super Hots on the shelf, it has been gathering dust there for years. The flying surfaces are all covered in white 21st Century fabric and I all I gotta do is decide to spend a couple of days completing the fuselage.

Okay, whoopee, it's not a speed plane. That I know. But's a quick plane and crazy aerobatic and for some reason I tend to think the folks that hang out on this forum are pre-disposed to having built and flown airplanes such as the Hots series with as much power as you could manage with the airframe or the budget.

So, my question is regarding gobs of power in this aircraft and flutter. Are they predisposed to flutter when you push the speeds up? I was holding the fuselage in one hand and an OPS Super .60 [I've been fretting about what to put it in next] in the other and pondering the idea of replacing the forward turtledeck/canopy section with a fiberglass cowling of roughly the same shape but with a pipe tunnel. Plus other associated mods like stiffening the ailerons and using gapless hinging all-round. I should probably convert the aileron setup so that there is about 2" of fixed surface on the outboard of the wing panels. Any other advice is welcome!

See? That's at least in the spirit of this forum!

The aircraft seems rugged but I do, for example, recall getting aileron flutter on my .40 size Hots with a Picco .40/9-6 Rev-Up combo. It was moving along quite smartly at the time, so in the future I backed off on the pitch speed and it survived.

I had a Super Hots back in 1989 with a piped YS 60. Never had any flutter.

I'v ehad many many Hots in th evarious sizes and still have parts cut for a few of the original Hots and a Hots II kit NIB. No flutter on any of them... Put in the biggest motor you can!

If it turns out light enough, I would prop it for 3D.
Before 3D was even a RC related term, the first 3D I ever saw flown was with a home made HOTS.

Well that's just it. Models were evolving at the time, and the Hots was ahead of its time with a lightweight, overpowered, and highly nimble airframe.

I think I will go ahead and drop the OPS in it, seems like a good idea now.
