SPEED COBRA

Anyone know anything about these planes? Think I remember seeing them for sale in RCM Modeler about 20yrs ago. I think they were a 60 sized plane.

Found some more info, apparently not many people here interested though. They are still available in Germany but the guy wont ship to the states.

The SPEED COBRA is the standard beginner speed plane over here in Europe for people with hot 15 cc engines. However it comes with a very fat wing and tail feathers that should be much thinner for an acceptable speed plane design!

Because the fuse is very spacious, it is easy to install a large tank. But the entire parasitic drag resistance cumulated by the big fuse, the fat wing and the fat stab + fin makes a powerful 10 cc FIRE or RIRE engine (OPS, ROSSI, PICCO, JETT) already too weak for reasonable top speed.

Only with the 15 cc ducted fan engines such like
[ul][*] OS .91 VR-DF[*] ROSSI R90 DF[*] PICCO P90 DF[*] Angstrem 91[*] BVM .91R
[/ul]
that “fat pig Speedcobra“ (usually called by the Germans :D ) can be brought to true 190 mph after a monster dive. The only prop that is able to handle that high amount of drag is the APC 10x10“ prop, cut down to 9“ dia. As you can imagine more prop pitch leads to lower terminal speeds of the Speed Cobra. Same applies to smaller and larger prop diameter than 9“ in this special case.

It it very dangerous to apply the regular grey plastic APC 10x10 prop with a 15 cc ducted fan engine. Many of these 10x10 standard APC props failed already on the ground during test runs! – Fortunately nobody has been hurt so far.

For safety reasons over here people make hand laid continuous strand carbon fiber copies of that standard plastic APC 10x10 sport prop (pics below). These 9x10 CF "APC" props are used by the Speedcobra pilots mainly.

Speed Cobras sometimes have been modified with an engine and pipe cowl in order to gain more top speed for the EURO Speed Cup. But the rest of the plane is so bulky that these aerodynamical improvements virtually have no positive effect on the top speed.

To conclude:
The Speed Cobra flies like a dream for the speed beginner. Due to the thick wing it is hard to stall that plane during landing – very low speed touch downs are possible. But the Speed Cobra – even if modified with a home made engine/pipe cowl and powered by a modified 15 cc ducted fan engine – cannot break 200 mph, as demonstrated during past EURO Speed-Cups. Nowadays you will hardly find any Speed Cobras used for the Euro Speed Cup. Other speed plane designs are much more faster than "the pig“ - with the same engine and a speed prop sized smaller and pitched more aggressively.

I-Love-Jets , thanks for the info. It may be a pig but we have nothing like that in America. Have some very fast pylon racer type planes but they are 40 sized. I for one would love to see a Cobra or similar plane imported to the US.

i agree, someday i will try to figure out someway to build a very low drag plane for my OPS.

Sure I understand. The "pig" as a quite present (or dominant ;) ), easy to track and fly speed plane could be a great seller in the US.

And in combination with an angry thunderous 15 cc ducted fan engine in front it always turns peoples head at the flying field, especially if upgraded with the MACS #1190 unmuffled tuned pipe for instance :D .

But the US distributor also has to supply the absolutely required 10x10 carbon fiber propeller APC copies, preferably prepared "ready-to-fly" (shortened and rebalanced). These props alone will sell at 30 to 40 bucks each I believe. [:@]

A 15 cc ducted fan engine isn't inexpensive to purchase and to operate as well.

So the Speedcobra is not what we would call "cheap speed entry".

oh, it screams for a cowling over the engine and a low wing would look better but i think the diamond dust or outlaw or whatever the triangle shaped planes are called are too ugly to own. just an example of differences of opinion.

Does anyone use the Robbe Rasant as a first (or second or..?) speed plane? It is a simple and crude design the best I can tell from pictures, but it's the first RC kit I ever saw over here that was designed solely for high top speeds. My guess would be it flies at similar speeds to a Magnum or Q500, but I really do not know much about it. Someone gave me one recently and it is en route in the mail. Does anyone have any thoughts or comments about it? ILJ, are your wrists sore from all the typing in the last few days :)?

Does anyone use the Robbe Rasant
Well, the wooden ROBBE Rasant ARF (pics attached at bottom of this post) is well suited for any lightweight and well performing sports engine .30 to .40 sized
[ul][*] Webra .32[*] Webra .36[*] OS .32 SX[*] etc
[/ul]
The following setup of a Rasant was used for the German Speedcup 2004 resulting in an average top speed of 142 mph:
[ul][*] ROBBE Rasant ARF (stock)[*] OS .32 SX with standard muffler[*] 7x6 W APC prop (wide blade)[*] 19800 rpm static ground rpm[*] 15% nitro fuel
[/ul]
BUT the Rasant comes with some very bad attitudes that makes it impossible to fly safely above approx. 150 mph (so any Nelson .40 Q500 or Q40 , JETT .35 to .60 will be too much of power). First of all it is the affection to serious flutter. The ailerons are way too large for a speed plane. Second fault quite dangerous is the type of wing airfoil used. When reaching a certain speed (about 150 mph) the Rasant always wants to severely under-cut abruptly. It is like having sudden unexpected radio glitches affecting the elevator and leading to a heart attack. So there’s a massive aerodynamic problem with wing airflow.

Conclusion
The Rasant should be used by absolute speed beginners preferably. The advanced speed pilots should buy the sophisticated speed planes of Look ( [link=http://www.speedmodels.nl]www.speedmodels.nl[/link] ) instead. His designs featuring glass fuse are well built + very strong wing + don’t come with any bad flying attitudes at all. And they can be powered by high performance engines if you want. For instance the combo Stinger .40 (very easy to fly) + Jett .60 LX FIRE is perfect for the ambitious speed flyer. 175 mph top speed should not be a problem here.

Stinger .40 http://www.speedmodels.nl/stinger40/stinger40.htm

http://www.rc-network.de/forum/attac...8&d=1158692382

Next step above the Stinger .40 already would be this kind of 230+ mph purpose built speedplane with an OPS RIRE for instance:

There probably is a demand for certain kits of fast prop driven planes that are not called “Diamond Dust“ or “Weston Magnum“.

To get an overview over the actual range (SPEED COBRA, STINGER .40 and [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_7237204/tm.htm]STREGA .45[/link] have been mentioned already) I would like to list several (sport + semi-scale) speed plane kits available from Germany.

All below introduced planes are offered for many years and are well established over here. I think most of the sellers will ship internationally.

We were responded to a model in scale 1:7, because not everyone is able to transport such big models as the ones in scale 1:5 and 1:6. Now the ME 163 is a famous sign ouf our house and has already been used by many famous pilots at competitions. So we decided to build it. Merely you have to renounce

description:
The General Dynamics F 16 US Super-Fighter presents a super modern jet with aesthetic curves and excellent flying characteristics.
This small semi-scale and fast jet model features well balanced aerobatic capabilities. It is made for performing fantastic rolls, big loops or fast and low dives. But the low speed and stall qualities are pleasant as well.
For that the F-16 impresses with a large speed range and perfect flight characteristics, she is absolutely easy to fly!
