Jett 50 FIRE
 

I'm planning to put a Jett 50 FIRE on my Whiplash. Jett mentions a "magic muffler". Does it fit on the Whiplash, and if so how does performance compare to a full tuned pipe?

What kind of performance would result if I were to choose the side exhaust version with muffler. The only reason I give that version consideration is that it could be more easily adapted to many sport planes later on.

For the Whiplash, if you are going with the rear exhaust, you will want the full pipe. Dub has built the FIRE/pipe combo a number of times for whiplast and dd installations. Pipe and header are welded, and pre-tuned.

However, if you think the side exhaust will be useful to you down the road.... go with the BSE50 side exhaust. The performance is still outstanding, and if you are willing to accept 150 mph instead of 155 mph (for example only)... the side exhaust will give you pleanty of performance.

The side exhaust engine with regular Jett Stream muffler is also capable of running over a broader rpm range, meaning broader prop selection. The RE pipe set up is tuned for a somewhat narrow RPM band, and prop selection is critical for good performance.

For a long time I have been using K&B 6.5 FIRE with a long pipe so the graduation to the Jett 50 FIRE is a natural. The K&B has never been useful for Sport planes since it won't run at less than half throttle. Thus I would be pleased if the Jett 50 FIRE without a full pipe will have a useful mid-range for other applications later on.

When I order it for the initial application, the Whiplash, I'll be sure to mention that RPM is the #1 consideration, not dB of noise.
