Gentlemen, I want to share with you what I did on a Piper Super Cub for wing struts. I also used the airfoil shaped aluminum but instead of inserting threaded rod, I filled them with epoxy. It does make them more heavy than you may want, but it probably wont make that much difference on a big bird, and as observed in a later crash, they held up very well.

And I'm such a lucky guy, I've got a set o' 1/4 scale plans one o' th' members here donated a while back. 'Nice to hear a good "review" on th' airframe.
An STA is MOS' definitely in my future!

My kit has the struts made from aluminum. It's odd, because my kit was packed over 20 years ago. It is complete, with all parts still in the original bags. This kit was actually unopened until I got it a few days ago. I've got a long row to hoe with this one. Anyone have a clue where to find one of the original universal engine mounts? I suppose that I can just build an engine box and fab it to the firewall/s. I'm thinking about letting Keoleo (sp?) do a scale exhaust for it. Anyone need any information from this one before I start to screw it together? I'll be happy to provide photos, measurements etc. For anyone who needs it.

Started screwing it together last evening. I have the aft bulkhead, the front cockpit rear bulkhead and the servo tray glassed in. I cut a new firewall from 3/8" A/C ply. The thin stuff seems a tad light to carry either a ST or Quadra engine. I'm going to run a 50cc engine in mine, thus the heavier firewall. Any thoughts on this?

I'll be doing some photos. Last evening, I got the landing gear trunions glassed in, and aligned. This is a fairly simple model, so far, but you have to keep the alignments correct, or its all off.

I hope you build the ryan. I love the plane and byrons is a solid kit. I am not sure which mount came with the Ryan since it is a long time since i opened one up. I think though, that Steve Thomas over at Bobs Hobbies had a bunch of Byron stuff. He bought a big box of mounts and mufflers a year or too back and I think he still has a lot. The best Ryan i saw I think had a g-38 on it but I thought the owner mounted it to the firewall. I have a couple of bent purrpower units but they are for the big and small sachs, so won't work for you. Good luck anyway.
By the way which engine are you planning on?

I'm planning to run the new SYSSA 30 gas engine. It's narrow, has a rear exhaust, and won't require cutting the cowl. I've got all the fuse glassed, and tonight, I mounted the main gear. It's moving really quickly, and is going to look very nice as well. I'm doing it like Maxey Hester did on the little one for SIG. Red, white and black, with checkerboard wing and stab bottoms. Sucker is actually fairly big too.

It's standing on all 3 feet now, and I'm dry fitting the cowl. I cut a new firewall from 3/8" Aircraft Ply, since there is no way that I'm going to hang an engine off a piece of 1/8" ply. I'll start on the tail group next. I'm thinking about laminating the perimeter of the tail group and the leading edge of the wings and wing tips, just to keep dings away. I'm going to glass the foam parts with something on the order of 1.5oz cloth and use enviro tech for the finishing resin. Still have the wheel pant assemblies to go first.

Looking good Bill. It looks like you swapped out the stock struts for some robarts perhaps? If so which ones did you use? I'm looking to build my kit this next year and I've been gathering notes from people that have them in progress.

Fitted the Horizontal Stab and Vertical Stab last night. I'll start Glassing the stabs tonight. I'm using 0.5 oz/yd2 cloth and Envirotec resin. Looks like it is going to be a really nice way to do the foam.
