Check demensions of the tank and space, get one that fits.
Do not lower the tank, even with exhaust pressure the level right under the
engine is as far as the fuel can be lifted.
Directly behind the engine can cause flooding.
I use a Perry Pump on mine.
I run a K&B .61 swinging a 10" 3 blade.

Hello Guys,

I am new in this field and I need your help.

I have two OS Max engines, a 25LA and 40LA and I would like to build an airboat. I am attracted by Dumas Windy and Big Swamp Buggy and I do not know which of them I should chose. It looks that both of them have advantages and drawabacks. The Windy has the tank at the same level with the engine (which is good), but my 25LA engine might by too big and I do not know if I have enough clearance for a 9x5 propeller. Also, the space for the fuel tank is kind of small and I cannot fit a bigger tank for this engine. The Big Swamp Buggy is kind of cool but I am afraid that my 40LA engine is small for it. Also, I do not like the tank placed under the engine and not at the same level with the engine.

Any suggestions or opinions? By the way, I would like to be able to drive it both on the water and snow.

 The BSB will be alright  with your 40.
The fuel tank under the engine works great with a exhaust pressure system.
The 40 will be on the light side , but it will make for a great fun machine.
The BSB is a little more difficult to build as it is a tunnel design.
It is a very durable boat and forgiving for pilot errors.

I have a modified Alligator Tours airboat with the fuel tank mounted on the deck. I run an O.S.46FX about 6" above the tank and I do not have fuel draw problems with exhaust pressure on the tank. It also worked with the Super Tigre 34 it came with. Your O.S.40LA will probably not move a BSB on grass or snow. At least not very well unless you keep it super light. Dennis

Yes, I am thinking that my 40LA is too small to run the BSB boat on grass or snow. I would go with the Windy if I knew that I could fit the 25LA engine on it together with a bigger tank. Also, I guess Windy is easier to build. I have to make up my mind before the summer ends( LOL).

I have read many threds about fiberglassing. What is that? Do you just put fiberglass cloth on the boat's hull? Use some epoxy and after that paint on top? What kind of paint is good for these boats?

What is involved in making the motor a puller instead of a pusher.(do i have to change the washer positions or what) Also if i was to put a .40 on it would it be too heavy in the rear?

I had a BSBwith a asp 46 and it would move on grass but not fast the fastest was with 11x6 prop but then it would not turn at full throttle let off to 3/4 and turn on a dime
a .46 would be minium motor i would put on BSB
build a cajun gator flat or a SI 3 20 or 60 Hydro

I have the sameproblem with my BSB. It will not turn under full throttle.
I wonder if the survo is not strong enough, I use a standerd 3003
I tried another one with no better results..
I am considering a water rudder system to flip up as I run through
lily pads.

I had the same problem with mine. I attributed it to small rudders - I had made serious modifications to the power pod and rudders and didn't increase the rudder size while I was at it. Now it seems that may just be a characteristic of the boat. I thought about a water rudder but never got around to it before I sold the boat. I still miss that boat, it was very fast in a straight line....but I don't miss the nitro mess. Now it's batteries forever!

Hello guys,

A few months ago I was asking on this forum which airboat I should buy: Windy or Big Swamp. I finally decided to go with Windy and just finished it a week ago. Here is a picture of it. I am using a OS Max 25 LA engine. I also had to increase the size of the tank compartment so I could accommodate a bigger fuel tank 180cc. Use Photobucket. Its a picture/video host site. Its free to join, and if you just post pictures you'll probably never run out of space.. i sold my BSB so i only have 3 no 4 airboats
scratch built Logan's air boat 24x12 .25 motor
alligator tours boat modified 4 " wider & custom paint job ST.34
SI 3 20 with fox .25 or a asp .46 depends on how fast i want to go(still under const)
newest boat i just bought over phone is a sidewinder will know if .20 or .40 size tommorow

You are quite passionate about your airboats. This one is my first one. Actually I have never built any boat in my life. I saw some videos with airboats on You Tube and like them a lot. That's how I got to build this one. I also like radio controlled aircraft. I am struggling now to pilot a T-rex 450 helicopter. Harder than I thought. Already damaged a few parts. I also use simulation software. It seems to help...to a point.

Sidewinder is a nice boat. I just looked at it on a few websites.

When you run your boat on the water, dont use a wood prop. They explode at RPM when they hit water, FYI. Flying prop shards can be really dangerous.

I haven't had it happen to me, but all of the Airboaters all say the same thing: No wood props except on dry land.

Otherwise that thing looks pretty darn neat! good job!

Your paint job on the Windy is just amazing!

Master Airscrew Nylon props work pretty well although NEED to be balanced. If they get knicked a little bit, sand it down, rebalance and keep running it. APC props are balanced better off the shelf (still should be balanced), and are a little more efficient/quieter but are more expensive and if it gets knicked it should be replaced. APC are composite props.

I'm still new to this field, too. I scratch built 1 flatbottom boat so far and am still trying to figure out how to drive it... LoL.. Its a blast to run, and gives ya something different to do. (I normally run 1/8 MT and 1/10 ST r/c trucks so this is waaaay new to me)
