OS fsa 81 or Saito FA 82b???????
Hi All
I want to put one of these engines into a Great Planes Revolver.
Anyone got any views on which one would be most suitable?
Thoughts?

RE: OS fsa 81 or Saito FA 82b???????
G'day
I have both. The 81 Alpha is in a Hanger 9 Piper Pawnee and the 82 will be going into a Sig AstroHog. I had an 82 previously in an Astrohog which I subsequently sold. It worked really well in the Hog. The 81 in the Pawnee has only had a couple of flights so far.
Both run well and swing similar props but I have never put a tacho on either.
Here the OS is $40 dearer than the Saito.
I prefer the Saito for its simplicity and the fact that the crankcase is not sealed. I wonder about the internal plumbing of the OS blocking up at some stage.
I only bought the OS as it was going out very cheaply.
If I had to choose again, it would be a Saito.

I vote for OS 81a, as its rock solid carburator will make tuning very easy; and OS will burn less amount of fuel than Saito..
OS internal oil circulation will keep your engine's inside well lubricated and rust free as well as your planes covering clean.
You can catch a deal at tower and get that engine for less than $300..

You really can't go wrong with either one. I have 3 of the OS alphas and I like the feature which eliminates the breather tube. Only have 2 years on these engines so we'll see if there are any problems with that. I don't think there will be but then I run 4 stokes for about 20 years before I get tired of them! The glow plug is also a little easier to get at with the OS. But of course a Saito is.....a Saito. They're tough and really sound great.

Thanks for the replies guys. They both sound like great motors.
Still don't know which one to go for.
I did notice there is a pumped version of the OS. Does that make a difference to the decision if that's added into the mix?

Yes, the price goes up! I've never used a pumped OS or Saito. They both seem to have adequate fuel draw with muffler pressure. I imagine the pump might allow for a little more remote a tank placement and give smoother running for aerobatics but again, I've never needed that.

Saito is much better about obsolescence if you are going to keep the engine for many years

G'day
Do a search for Dave Hobbs's way of running in his Saitos. It is simple and it works well.
You will probably find that the low speed needle is set very rich "out of the box". leave it like this for the first 20 minutes or so of running and leave the glow starter connected initially to keep it running with the really rich setting that Saito suggests for the initial runs.
And enjoy. I am sure you will.

Only if you enjoy hearing your chainsaw run.

No model engine sounds like the real thing, even the four-strokes. So we can choose between hearing something that sounds like our lawnmower (four-stroke) or our chainsaw (two-stroke). Now that I think of it, the turbine model engines sound the most like their real counterparts. And me stuck with a lowly pulsejet. (sigh)

Ed, each year Bruce Tharpe and his father attend a Pulse Jet gathering at, possibly the Salt Flats and I've viewed several views of various years. Cool Stuff. They definitely have their own sound.

Now what would really make their head spin is the concept of imaginary numbers as it applies to the ZDE. Now thats a "REAL" engine.
