hey everyone,
Laser has updated their website..........looks great with a lot of new info........give it a look,

http://www.laserengines.com/index.html
Thanks Summerwind!

Yes, lots of new info and the specified weight of the Laser 240-twin is now pretty correct. I weighed mine 1340 grams if I remember correctly. The old website said 1160 grams..

it measures out to 4.5"..........this is using a ruler with engine sitting on workboard and straight edge mounted on prop drive washer.

I have had experience with the 120. It is a good engine. I had it in a Great Planes Stearman which it flew in a scale like manner on FIA fuel. It is currently in an ESM ME-109 E which has not flown yet.

G'day

I have a Laser 70, a Laser 100 and a Laser 150. On their werbsite www.laserengines.com they suggest that you use the 150 if you would normally use a 120 size. The price difference is only 10 pounds.

I really like my Laser engines and the 70 gets flown just about every week. I was expecting the Lasers to be less powerful than my Saitos but I think the 70 flies my Kadet Senior better than my Saito 72. The 100 I put into a 60 two stroke sized Decathlon and it really is a wonderful combination. The 150 has just had its first flight in a 120 size Space Walker and is just about perfect though it is still very new and running on the rich side.

They are extremely easy engines to handle. Prime (choke finger over the carby and turn over), crank over a few times, apply glow and one smart back flip and they are running (though I use an electric starter on the 70). They have become my favourite engines. The back flip start is so consistent that every time I have tried it from cold, they have started first flip.

The picture is my hard working Laser 70 in its Kadet Senior.

Have fun choosing.

The 120 is going into a Proctor Jenny. It's about the same hight as the 80 and will fit in the Jenny. The 100 is too tall. The 80 would be good at a lower elevation but I fly at 7,000 ft. so the 120 should be a good fit. Thanks for the info.

Does anyone know the pitch on the crank threads on the Laser 180? The web site says the threads are M10. Is the pitch 1, 1.25 or 1.5? Thanks, Jay

I have three lasers, a 70, an 80 and a 200v, the 70 powers an old timer keil kraft falcon, 96" and I fly it with 10% nitro and a 14x6 wooden prop, the plane weighs about 10 pounds and this engine takes it up at 70 degree angles, then it's on to tickover for the rest of the flight. The 80 is in a 61" span fokker D7 and it flies with a graupner 14x7 grey and will knifedge up the strip all day.
The 200 vee is installed in a chris foss extrawot, 72" span and about 11pounds the engine hasn't run yet and I'm making best endeavours to get it in the air in three weeks.
My opinion is powerwise 10% nitro makes them the equal of the next size up, my 70 consistently out performs a similar plane with an asp 80 4 stroke in, equally the laser 80 is the equal of an os 91 surpass mk1, can't comment yet on the 200 it's my biggest engine by far, just engines in the UK sell a conversion kit to make them operate on gasoline and I'm considering that.
One thing I will say the 70 will start and run on diesel fuel without lighting the gloplug, haven't tried flying it yet. The fuel was model technics D-2000 if anyone feels like trying it!!!
BTW I use a starter to get them going.

Did you get an answer to this? In case you didn't it's M10x1.5.

Yes, thanks. I'm trying to get a prop nut similar to a Harry Higley type. Higley only has them in 10x1 and 10x1.25 and won't return phone calls.

I'm getting ready to maiden my extrawot, and am thinking about the prop.
I intend to break it in with a 16x6 jxf and I have a master classic 16x8 to fly it. I also have a 20x6 wood prop and, knowing how slick an extrawot is coupled with the fact thatI'll be using 10% nitro I'm wondering would the wood prop be OK?
Anyone any thoughts?

Where can I buy a Laser engine. Is Proctor the only USA dealer/distributor? In the UK does everyone buy factory direct or throught hobby shops etc.?

I have a daughter living in London that could buy for me there. Just looking for the most economical way to buy.

Thanks,

littlera

Why not buy direct from him? google laserengines and I'm pretty sure you can buy from him, he doesn't supply model shops in the uk, so you have to buy from the factory. The prices he quotes include postage iirc but you'd better check up on it.
If you'r daughter buys you one and sends it on to you you will be paying uk tax of 20% on it so going direct diverts your tax to postage if I'm correct about the postage being included. website is www.laserengines.com btw. hth

John,

Thanks for your reply - good information. I believe I will contact them and see what they can do. What I may be able to do is have the engine shipped to Croydon where my daughter lives along with a VAT rebate form, which I can turn in at the airport. (I am visiting her in June, and will be taking a Baltics cruise out of your home town of Dover! I was in Dover when we took the car ferry to France in late 2009. Nice area, Dover.) When I get back, I can get the 20% back. I would then just give the money in pounds sterling to my daughter. The banks here charge about USD 25 to convert the pounds to dollars. As the rebate would be maybe 75 pounds (close to USD 50) you lose too much in the exchange. This is why I rarely do this after traveling unless it is a significant purchase or purchases.

Thanks again for your input.

Randy L.

Oops, transposed my calculations. I meant 50 pounds, close to USD 75.

I have 2 x Laser 100's.
One is earmarked for a VQ P40. Not sure about the other.
I also have an unbuilt Blackhorse .60 sized T-18 Trojan, but a Laser 100 may be a little over the top for this model.
I have the Blackhorse T-28 Trojan and fly it with a Saito .91.... My guess would be the 100 would be just fine with a little extra to boot...

Everyone,

It really looks to me that Laser is out of business![] Repeated email purchase inquiries to them have gone completely unanswered (or at least ignored.) My daughter lives in London, not too far from the factory at Hemel Hempstead, and I have had her place repeated calls to the factory over the last six weeks or so. No one EVER answers the phone, although it is still a valid number. The phone always just clicks to voice mail without any message about leaving your number. She has left numerous messages, and none are ever returned.

Sad if true.

Come on, Laser, prove me wrong!!

artto,

Thanks for the info - maybe there is hope! The Laser engines +44 1 442249505 is the number she has been calling. I will have her try the other number to see if there is response.

Either way, it is odd that they will not return emails or phone calls to buyers with money in their fists. My emails were done both from their web site directly and directly from my email address in case there was a problem with the website email.

Thanks,

littlera

I know Proctor is the US dealer. Their prices are also much higher than I can buy directly in the UK when I will be there in June.
