RE: Vertigo II Build Thread
I have a Vertigo II kit that does not have any plans or paperwork. I would like to obtain at a minimum the rudder plan and info on CG. Of course, any other documentation would be useful so I can get this project underway. Thanks

I have noted your use of BSI 20 minute epoxy. My attempts to find a source for BSI products led me to Chief models which claims to have their line, however, what they have is labled Chief. Where do you find the BSI epoxy?

I get mine from my LHS. BSI will label the product with the retailer's logo, etc. For example, mine is labeled " Marty's Hobbies, Thousand Oaks, Ca.". It still says BSI on the back. It appears that Chief Aircraft is in the same program. Chief would most likely verify this to be correct if asked.

Masking for red trim. I'm following along with the trim scheme that I designed in 1976 (See pic of orange/red plane). I never cared for how the orange ran up into the stab at the rear of the fuselage, although I think it came out ok for being designed by a 13 year old.
So now at 47 years, I finally came up with something that flows better. I have been agonizing over this one detail for two years now. Looking at the new plane, you can figure that the strip in the middle will be the white base color, with red above it, as well as below, extending from the wing. It still follows the old design, but the red meets the stabilizer in a more fluid way, while retaining a sort of 70's feel, with the red flowing up up the fin in an organic kind of way.

Great paintwork. You are getting good at spraying that Klasskote! I will have to give it a try- although I still miss Hobbypoxy and K&B superpoxy - the reports I have received on Klasskote has been uniformly good.

Thank you, gents! I am covering the remaining tail bits with their respective colors, I will post pics of that soon. It is raining once again, so the canopy paint will have to wait a couple of days. See, I wasn't lying- it does rain in California.
Cardinal- I also miss the old standbys of Superpoxy and Hobbypoxy, I had great results with them. My impression so far of the Klass Kote is that it is everything they were and actually easier to apply. I am very happy with the Klass Kote product, and certainly recommend it without hesitation.
RG- This time the canopy will be black. Either a fairly long single canopy, or a "Two Place" along the lines of an F-4 or F-105 style. Those aircraft had the long turtledeck, and the second canopy is an easy deal that looks good. See pic.
I sure am enjoying the painting process. The next one will be 100% glass & paint- no plastic film.

Hard to tell in the pics, did mixing the orange with the red get you closer to the film color?

I inadvertently ordered yellow, and it worked out ok. In fact, it took more yellow than red. I lost count of the ratio, if I have to do any red again, I will have to re- do. The mix that I came up with matches quite well. Thank you for your help with this..

Tail bits complete. Next up- paint the canopy. The Klass Kote is very glossy. The rudder and elevators are Monokote/Econokote covered. You can tell the difference in the finish.

Canopy painted. Paint complete. Now it's Miller time.
Next up- final assembly. Finally.
One final word on Klass Kote paint. Klass Kote rocks! Not ever have I had such an unqualified success with a paint project. Even these rusty hands turned out a way better than a six-foot finish. A very easy handling paint. I know that most folks have their pet paint system, but if you are contemplating a fresh painting project, I would urge you to consider this stuff. And no, I do not work for Klass Kote or sell their product, it just works well.

Negative on the clear coat. I will save the weight on this one. The finish already exceeds the criteria that I set for this project.
Thank you again for your kind words, it is my pleasure to share my humble bit of knowledge with all and help others learn in this ARF age...

Indeed. I have a friend who does graphics. He is going to set me up. I have one of the original Vertigo II decals that came with the kit. He is going to scan, it, clean it up, and cut it for me. Then maybe AMA numbers and a couple of other things.

TOMORROW IS THE BIG DAY!!!
But not without some drama. Last night's engine break-in session was going well up until the 35 minute mark, when I noticed a growing pool of silver-gray oil under the airplane. Front bearing failure!! What to do? I could not locate any replacements, so I bought another engine. Fortunately. the Magnums can be had for $99, so I transplanted the broken-in top end to the new good case and bearings, and once again the prop spins around. I am going to order some upgrade bearings from Boca Bearings, then I will have two good engines. Either a spare for this airplane, or maybe I will use #2 in my P-7.
I have an hour run time on the Magnum. It took a while for the top end to loosen up, it had a tight pinch. It runs like a raped ape. It is peaking at 13,200 turning an APC 11-7 burning 15% Omega with a few extra ounces of castor oil added for beak-in. It's an OS clone, and so far, except for the bearing failure, it runs like an OS clone. They seem to have a decent reputation, and if it holds up OK, it has a lot of potential.
