Default Cheap, Wooden, and 3D?

Hello RC'ers. I'm looking for a 3D plane that is wooden and also costs between $250- $450, maybe even $500. But the cost has to be including the Servos, Battery, Motor/Engine, and ESC (if it's electric). i'm looking into the E-flite Extra 260 and the Hangar 9 Twist 40, but I'm not sure if they're the best I could be getting.

If it has to be an ARF and you want no compromise 3D, I'd go the way of [link=http://www.ohiomodelplanes.com/47proyakarf/index.htm]OMP's ProYak[/link] or [link=http://www.ohiomodelplanes.com/56razoryakarf/index.htm]RazorYak[/link].

What he said(above)!

I got my proyak as follows:

Kit - 189
OS 55ax - 100 on ebay- used....still wasnt broken in(you take your chance on used, I made out well)
Servos - hitec 311 - $8 each

Total Less than 350, not including the receiver which Ill assume you have already. Love the plane, and looking to get a Razor yak, or Fusion next.

It doesn't HAVE to be ARF. I'd actually prefer PNP, RxR, or BNF, but I figured that the most options are with ARF. And the OS 55ax... is that a four- stroke?

Of the two above the Twist is mostly for fun, not good for serious 3D, the Extra would be better for that. The OMP's mentioned above are really good for 3D but spendy, not cheap ARF's. The AX 55 is a two stroke, good engine too. [8D]

Yeah, I'm a young person and I talked it over with my parents, they don't like the idea of nitro. Not sure why... but I think the E-flite Extra 260 is a good pick, however after a few radio failures today, I'm not sure balsa is the way for me to go right now. Any ideas of planes from Horizon?

Both of the airplane above are good to start 3D flying with. In the beginnig you will be doing hovering, flat spins, harriers, knife-edges and waterfalls but not much else and these airplanes will make those easier to do as long as you keep several mistakes high.

With nitro and electric, you can go either way and spend the same. Electric is no way cheaper than nitro if you want to go for branded products, chinese motors and battries are cheaper. Some time back I was considering going electric with a GP Reactor Bipe. Found out the cost od a OS FS-81A was the same if not less than that of the 80 size rimfire motor with the two LiPo cells and ESC that is required.I then gave up and purchased a FS91SII. (You may want to try out the Reactor series of airplanes in GP off Tower or otherwise, they are easy to fly as long as you stick to low rates. Any engine with a "FS" in it is 4-stroke, those with "FX", "AX" are 2-strokers. Saito engines are always 4-strokes).

Your parents and neighbours may object to glow due to noise issues and also because you need to work with methanol, nitiomethane etc. If you fly at a club, it will usually be a distance from human habitation to take care of the noise issue. Regarding the chemicals, you need to talk to them through if you want to go glow. Just remember to keep hygiene, dont ingest the fuel and keep your airplane clean with some soap water after flying is done for the week.

Since you are new to 3D, get a 2-stroke engine for their simplicity. Also, remember, larger airplanes are easier to fly but more difficult to 3D initially. The OMP's ProYak or RazorYak are profiles (fuselage is a flat wood and not lhollow). These are great for learning all-out 3D and easily repairable when you crash, but they dony fly like real airplanes. (I dont like profiles for the same reason, but then I dont do allout 3D)

ThumbSkull, who are you talking to? And ameyam, yeah, I was thinking about two- strokes, and I hate profiles too, so maybe you could recommend something.

(in reply to mnrcaerobat) as noted in the post.

As far as hating profiles, There is nothing under 100cc size that will 3D anywhere near as good as a profile.
It's kind of why profiles exist.

If it's about 3D flying, profiles rule the hanger until you get to really large airframes.

If it's about looks, forget about 3D.

You won't find a full fuselage airframe that will do this stuff under 100cc.

I hated profiles till i broke down and got one. Everyone kept telling me if I really wanted to learn 3D, that this was the way to go. It is the truth! My ProYak has made me a much better, if not good 3D flier. Ive taken the lessons on to my full fuse planes. Its the way to go for sure.

airplaneclem,
What is your level of experience? Are you looking for hard core 3D or just hovering and same relatively tame "tricks".

By the way, ThumbSkull is correct.

ThumbSkull- You have a valid point, so I'll look into the ProYak.

Jimmy- All the 3D I know is how to hover, harriers, flat spins, snap rolls. Not much. But I want to learn.

What do you all think about the Hangar 9 Tribute 36? Its smaller and $100 cheaper than the ProYak, but I'm wondering if it would be better.

IMHO Hanger 9 doesn't have any serious 3D planes. That's not to say they are bad they just don't have anything that is hardcore 3D.

If you are considering a full fusalage 41" electric similar to the Eflite Extra you previously posted look at the 3D Hobby Shop 41" Edge. It's referred to as the "99 Buck Huck". They are selling so fast that 3DHS is having a hard time keeping them in stock. It's the bomb for that class; "wood, 3D and cheap".

H9 doesn't have anything that 3D's anywhere near as good as a good profile. Forget about Tower and Horizon for 3D.

If the name of the plane has 3D in it, it's almost a guarantee that it doesn't 3D very well.

[link=http://www.ohiomodelplanes.com/]OMP[/link], [link=http://www.swanyshouse.com/index.aspx]Swany's House[/link], [link=http://www.3dorbust.com/main.sc]3D or Bust[/link], [link=http://www.3dplanekits.com/index.html]3Dplanekits[/link], [link=http://www.3dhobbyshop.com/]3DhobbyShop[/link], are all great places to shop for 3D capable birds.

ps. I didn't mention the small 3Dhobbyshop bird because it goes against my point somewhat. It isn't a bad flier but a profile will outlive it many times (more durable).

I have a twist 40 with an OS 61 on it an it's a total blast.
While many argue that it doesn't do 3 d real well it does do it an just makes a better pilot of you.
With her it's never a dull moment an you never get board.
Talk about the wind She loves it
I've been flying her for 3 yrs now as my main flyer.
This plane has a large following an had a thread here for years till we moved to rcgroups under twistacholic's
Their are a few guys running brushless motors if nitro is not an option
But please remeber that these electric motors can be very dangerous
I'd do any set-ups with the prop off.

Thanks for your input, but why are electric setups, which are usually cool, clean, and non- explosive, be dangerous?

They aren't, unless you fly one into someones face.

Actually, when a fuel motor is running everyone knows it and stays clear. With electric you can bump the throttle. I was checking the rudder on a high powered electric and bumped the throttle and it shot from 3' away into my bare foot. Also, a friend was carrying his electric back from a crash while still plugged in. He bumped the throttle and it gave him a hugh gash on the arm.

Oh, yeah, thats true. I'm sure we've all done THAT a thousand times, because I know I have, haha. You have a good point. The thing I'm not so happy about with glow is the operating costs. I dont like the idea of paying for $20  fuel once a month. Also buying glow plug starters and glow plugs. What would be a better, more reliable, maintainence- free engine, an Evolution or an O.S.?
