RTFM!

Not sure how active this thread is any longer. I am in the market for a couple of parts for a used 337. A set of wingstruts and a rear cowl. Anyone happen to have any parts or recommendations on how to get any. Tried the nitroplanes phone number and the forum for parts, no response at all. Thanks in advance for any help.

I would recommend sending a PM to the moderator of the Nitro Planes support forum here on RCU. If that does not work, keeping trying to call them.

I have had really good luck with the support forums in recent months, whereas Nitro Planes used to have a reputation for having really poor customer service. I think that if you try there again you may get a response of some sort at least.

The struts are just rounded sticks with white covering on them. You could make them pretty easily. The rear cowl, however, is a different story...

Good luck.

Just thought I'd chime in.
Although this thread was started almost 4 years ago it is brand new to me!

I bought a Nitroplanes 337 on 2/25/2010 (They finally put the red/white/blue model back on line).
Scratched my head for a few days looking at the plans and then I found this thread.
I want to thank all of you for getting this information out to all of us. It's a great read!

I have 2 Magnum XL 91's sitting on the shelf. I noticed in this thread that other 337's were built with Magnum XL 70's.
The XL 91 is only 1.2 ounces heaver than the XL 70. Although this is probably much more power than I need, do any of you think I will have a weight problem with these engines? I have read that many of you had to add extra weight anyway for proper CG.

I also read about stronger main landing gear. P-Diddy, where did your friend find these?

Using the advice and tips from this thread I have made some changes to this plane that will make it significantly easier to assemble at the field.

I am getting near the finish of this build and will share photos of the modifications as I upload them.

Wing modifications: By making new bolt mounts for the TE of the main wing, the rear cowling can stay in place. I installed the LE dowel rods then drilled and threaded them to fit nylon bolts. With this mod the main wing just sets down on the plane and is bolted in.

I still have to work on this photo upload process. Sorry if this looks weird.

Hey, good idea!

As far as the main gear goes, I will check and see if he can remember where he got it.

Since this thread started 4 years ago, and I have reviewed this and other threads and came up with some good work arounds for this plane, I have started a new thread for a build that includes modifications for balancing and field assembly.

Have a look:

Here is the response I got from my buddy regarding the main gear mod:

I made it myself from 1/8†aluminum stock from Home Depot. I cut it to the same size as the supplied gear and then used counter sunk flat head screws to attach the “extra†aluminum to the factory gear. I then covered with large shrink tubing, in white, to match the airplane. The added weight is negligible and the added aluminum supports the factory gear and prevents bending.

Thanks P-Diddy!

Might be worth a look. I will get to first flight soon. We'll see how she does. I like the white shrink tubing idea.

Well I have spent the last few days reading this thread and looking at the pics. Now Nitroplanes has put the yellow and red 337 Skymaster on sale foe $149.oo and it is to much of a temptation to pass up. I believe that I can improve on your already tested designs and add some of my own. Was thinking to add rudders but have the servo’s control wire inside the boom maybe with a servo arm on a pivot point near the control surface to reduce the tails weight and increase the torque affect produced by the servo. I’m not sure but I think I would like to just make access holes thru the back scoop rather than relocate the old ones. I also would like to try out the ASP46AII engines mounted sideway with pitts mufflers. I want this aircraft to be able to break down easy for transport and storage. I have a winter to plan test and develop these Ideas and this will be my first build thread that I have actually posted something other than to ask questions. I was thinking to put ASP61AII but the weight and power would be too much. I think the 46’s would work great and the pitts muffler should reduce the overall weight. Well I look forward to this build and the task at hand. Please feel free to suggest or disagree with my train of thought as this is part of the fun of building.

I'm almost finished the single electric conversion of my Nitro 81" and the installation to the ArduPilot autopilot.

Should have more pics next week.

Gee, I would not have liked that brilliant yellow colour at all... I have just finished repainting the white/blue monokote a dull grey low-viz scheme, using a light brillow pad scuffing and then a coat of adhesion promoter primer.

That yellow would have been a b__ch to cover!

Great for a trainer, not so for a UAV.

I lock the aluminum tubes in place with the set screws as per "Steve1mac"'s [link]http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_9681615/anchors_9681687/mpage_1/key_/anchor/tm.htm#9681687[/link]photo here.

Once the ArduPilot Mega is installed within the centre wing section, I intend to epoxy the wing booms onto the centre section for permanence (transportation break-down is not a big worry for me).

I had thought of adding carbon tubes within the aluminum tubes as a strengthener, just as I have with my two EasyStars, but since I do not intend any high G flights, I think this is sufficient for now, especially since the tubes do not run entirely thru the centre section and join up as I had thought.

Haven't looked at this forum in a while.
My wing tubes had bends in them after my first 3 modest flights.
I replaces thjem with brass tubes with doll rods epoxied in them. No more bent tubes.

It sounds like the carbon rods might be a good idea after all.

I ordered the Skymaster and received an email that she will arrive on Thursday the 11th (11/11/2010) I am hoping she arrives with nothing damaged or defective. I have made plans and have order some parts and pieces to get started on her just as soon as she arrives. I like the carbon rod idea so when she arrives I will look into what will be needed to make that modification.

I had problems with my rear exhaust mod. I made couplers and attached 3 exhaust pipes to make the bend. The muffler was just where I wanted it but engine vibration and the longer pipes caused too much fatigue at the joints. I decided to use a 90° exhaust bend into the muffler and exit straight down out of the cowl.

The plane arrived today I opened the box and checked all of the parts. They all seem to be in great shape. I will be starting on this build in a few week still have some details to finish on another project also purchased from Niroplanes as well A super Senior 60 81” wing span. So far I have been real happy with all the planes I have purchased from Nitroplanes being able to see pictures and read all the issues helped in making my decisions.
