Smoke system for Turboprop
Hey Guys,
I wonder if anyone can help.
I am looking for information on how to install a smoke system in my Turbo Raven.
The model is very light so it could do with the added weight.
I have a Jetcat Turboprop installed. Any photos of the installation and info on what I would need, would be greatly appreciated.
A photo of the turbo raven from last saturday.
Thank you.
Regards,
Brian.

RE: Smoke system for Turboprop
I had smoke on T-Raven. The fuel tank was so large, I ended up cutting 1/3 of the tank and installing a bulkhead in the tank and reassembling. Now I had a fuel/smoke tank without affecting the CG. I used a Sullivan Skywriter smoke system and two smoke tubes (on on each stack). I just ran the tubes into a hole drilled into the stock exhaust pipe before the exhaust extensions.
The smoke was identical to the pic shown above.

George

Brian,
Here is a shot of the plumbing installation on my Tucano. I use a Jet Central Smoke System and it truly puts out like no other system I have ever seen as Craig indicates.
If you need any other shots just let me know.
Cheers,
Beave

Hey George and Beave,
Thank you for your replies.
Are the smoke tubes held to the exhaust stacks in any way? or are they just a tight push fit in?
Also what smoke oil are you guys using, the typical stuff used for the gas planes?
Thank you again.
Brian.

Brian,
As you can see from Boli's pic, the tubes are secured by a screw right on the engine mounts and inserted in the exhaust. I'm not sure about his, but I used nothing at the inlet hole; it was just secured at the tube hold tabs.
Regarding smoke oil; I used Super Dri smoke oil, but I think there is a new smoke oil out now; I just can't remember the name of it at the moment.
Regards,
George

RE: Smoke system for Turboprop
Hello,
Please excuse me for asking a dumb question- In the installation of the turboprop-where is the air intake? The reduction gear is at the nose of the aiplane and is the air intake buried in the fuselage?i.e at the opposite end of the unit?
Thank you

Its important on TP units that the turbine takes in cool air, so the nose duct is baffled to put the air through to the back where the turbine inlet is.

On the Tucano, the air comes from inside the fuselage. There is a louver on the belly that uses "ram air" to add positive pressure to the fuse so it maintains steady air for the turbine.

Robart Liquid Sky.
Here is a vid we made at Super Jets South. It really shows how well the smoke system works. Skip forward to 2:00 unless you want to see some scary shots of Eric's knees...LOL!
