Gary, how much weight did you need in the nose? I'm curious because everybody has to put around 5-7 lb's. My glass fuse razor back with the radial 44 lb's no nose weight. my wood fuse bubble with a gt 80 36lb's, no nose weight. Man I just don't get what everybody does so different.. jeff

I'm building a new cowl and adding operational cowl flaps and a dummy radial, so I will be able to back off the ballast a little. We are also adding electric control for the inner gear doors and a new sequencer, but that is very close to the CG anyway. I would like to know how you get the tail so light. That is the only way I see to get the nose weight down.
We were pretty careful with balsa selection, and didn't overdo the resin. But we do have the metal foil on her as you know. We came in at 49lbs. Lands like it weighs 18 though. Dino says all the time not to worry about even 50 or more. She really does handle nicely at even the 49lbs. Would be easier on those gear though at closer to 40 lbs.
We had steel posts made for the strut-to-trunnion connection on the CJ gear. A lot of the slop in them comes from the aluminum OEM parts. Really tightened them up. It only added a couple ounces.

This is my third Meister P-47 they all come out at 45-50 pounds with about 5-7 pounds of lead in the cowl is about right, the last one I sheeted the tail with 3/32" balsa and it came out heavy so I rebuilt the tail and sheeted with 1/16" balsa, must be the glass fuse that added the extra weight.. any way even at about 50 pounds with a 100cc/5.8 gas engine they fly great and the weight is not a problem.

I do not expect much issue with gear stress with these brutes which has 1" diameter steel struts, on my prior P-47 I had similiar C/J gears with 3/4" strut and I was impressed with how they operated, I over ran the paved runway into some rough gravel and pot holes, the 3/8" x1" tube at the top of the strut attaching it to the body bent on the overload, and that was it!,, not even a scratch on the rest of the gear. ( I know I set the scissor of the gear back instead of forward, it worked out better this way with less hollowing out the ribs).

Yea, we have CJ gear in ours. The biggest problem, after 40 flights this year, was the stud in the top of the strut tube that connects it to the trunnion. Soft aluminum wears and works loose constantly. We had steel studs machined and they fit perfectly. They will not be working loose. I am also installing small bolts through the rivets in the scissors. The 3/4" strut itself, and the other components have been up to the task for sure.

Beautifully detailed. How big is this compared to the Easytiger one?Ihave that and it is 95" and 30 pounds only. Flies so easy. But not this kind of detail at all.

I have got the final silver coat of paint on the canopy frame and pulled the Ralph Cinningham q-100 and replaceing it with the q-100m I pulled out of the P-47 I recently sold without the engine, the Cunningham motor is to hard for me to start with my bumb elbow since dislocating it couple years ago.No pambie ambie standoff's here, good old hard 2x4 lumber, engine ain't going anywhere here but on the fire wall solid.

Ram3500 - I think At this stage everything goes together so easy, and you know nothing is going to get screw up or complicated, almost don't want to rush it now it is so plesant to work on, all iceing on the cake now, one thing I hate to think of though painting the stars and bars one major project, I won't think about that for now and just take it easy and enjoy the build, george.

How do you get those panel lines to be so '3d' and sometimes as if they are under the paint? Is it as simple as pre-drawing in black and then painting over? I'd love to do one of these in chrome if I get the chance.....

Not chrome. It is aluminum foil (Flight Metal and Aerofoil), and the panel lines are real. Panels were drawn on the glassed airframe, then each panel was cut to those lines and applied individually.
