Default 4-tec 3.3 OR Jato 3.3

i got out of the hoby for a while to start a salt water aquarium. thats cpmplete and i recently got into the hobby again with a revo 5309. that project is almost complete so looking for something fast and fun. i have owned both and both are a blast to drive!

i was leaning alittle more towards the jato, just because it pretty much equally as fast as the 4-tec but the jato can drive on more surfaces.

what do you guys think?

I had a 4-tec and I got rid of it because I didn't want to be limited to just smooth-as-glass pavement. Its fast, but running it in grass or dirt would be like taking a corvette through a mud pit. If you want to run on multiple surfaces like you said, the Jato would be the better choice between the two.

I've heard it is a tough cookie. I have one. But it seems like I don't drive my stuff like other people do. I hardly ever break anything.

I don't break much either. There is a difference between having fun and abusing it.

You could always get the Big Block conversion from New-Era, and the Hot-Racing tranny gears.

If you run foam tires on less than perfectly smooth surfaces, they will get chewed up and fall apart. I had foams on my 4-tec and ran it in the street and after 3 tanks I had chunks missing. This wouldn't be any different on a jato.

IMO a big block isn't necessary in a jato. Its expensive and kind of a waste of power since the car is so light and only 2wd. I've heard good things about the Losi 3.4cc engine, or if you're into OS engines I'm sure an .18 would work good too. The TRX 3.3 obviously comes in it normally but if you want something different you have plenty of options. You could even get a high-end .12 or .15 and have a real screamer too.

Or I THINK you can use a Dynamite Mach 2 .19 engine that's made to be a Traxxas replacement engine. About 80 MPH I honestly don't know. Try looking for the thread about the 93.1 MPH Jato on here. I think he used a Picco P9R engine modded by Clockwork Racing Engines.

I think it would take a heck of an engine to get that fast.. I think you will have to spend some money on that one. I doubt a RTR type .21 will even do it.

Supertib,I know that Jato has a Clocked P9R-whats the new engine thats going to be so much faster?By the way you do great work...........

the engine in it now is not clocked...the new engine going in is..... but its a secret !
The Picco .21 P9R Evo3 engine is $375 out of the box stock. I'd expect a quality modded engine at least $450+ I'm sure this would do the job but you better have a hefty wallet.

As far as the OS .21 goes - I do not know. I do not use OS engines so I don't know anything about them.

I would assume the P9R is a big block and would require a big block conversion kit. (about $90 - New Era Models) Google "P9R Evo3" and do a little digging.

seems the P9R Evo3 is an "on road engine"

i do plan to run off road a bit also.....
just baseball field, and and short grass areas........so i dont thing i should get an on road motor.

is there any PICCO motors that will drop in and be more powerfull then a TRX 3.3?

Picco smallblocks should drop in with a little finesse.. Big blocks require a different mount and some finesse as well. I think the mount dimensions or something is a tad different on the Piccos. I dont know for fact, but I've heard from the Monster truck "crew" that they had to shim the Picco's up a little bit to get the spur to mesh right.

Oh.. and On-road engines are ported to run on-road. On-road engines suck off-road and vice versa. You might want to look into an off-road .12 or .15 from Picco or Rossi. These are superior to any traxxas engine both in power AND manufacture. You will pay for that quality but its worth it.
