Grumania P-59 Airacomet
Hello everyone.
Here is a video of the beautiful P-59 built and flown by my friend Patrick Lanquetin.
http://www.vimeo.com/17250632
The video has been shot with my brand new Panasonic TM-700. I am still learning the camera, so it is not absolutely perfect yet.
Shot in 1080-60p.
The plane is very light ( 7.5 kg/15 lbs dry ) and is powered by a Jetcat P-60SE.
I helped Patrick to finish the plane in Flite Metal since it was a first try for him. Not bad at all for the first time...

How long would you estimate the take off roll to be?

BTW, the quality of the video transfer from the original 1080/60p file with Vimeo is absolutely stunning.
Here is a screen shot taken from Vimeo:
The big problem I have at the moment with the TM-700 is that the 1080/60p file cannot be natively edited by any of the programs I have. This is why I have posted the raw movie footage on Vimeo.
Of course I can edit the file via a conversion into Mpeg4 or other lower quality formats, but the output is then noticeably degraded compared to the original video footage.

oooH I can see Oli that some time went into it from someone. I would love to have the Mfg's small Euro but shipping and stuff killed a deal and if one comes up stateside!!! Ha. Very nice camera work.

This build took about 7 months.
You'll see a complete build and scaling report in the Feb-March edition of RCJI.

very nice. I´d like that bird. I´m missing some decals for maintenance nomenclature. Grumania wil send you a set rub on dry transfers in the near future...

RE: Grumania P-59 Airacomet
Hello all!
I am new to the forum, but I will be building this amazing P-59 soon as I want a good scale flyer with no bad habits&low speed, have a P-80SE from a Sprint for it.
And I really loved the aluminium cover, olnico can you please tell a bit more about the Flite Metal, I am a real rookie in such scale jets (only flown my boomerang for 11 hours now).
I would love to have mine finished in the same manner, performance with P-60 looks very scale and true, so P-80 should be more than enough..

I believe that the P-80SE will be too bulky for the Airacomet. Plus you won't get the room for the fuel.
Use a Merlin 90 if you can...

The Airacomet was designed when no other turbine size than the 80 was available. My very first one (pictures) had one of my homebuild turbines in it - this had exactly the size of a P 80. Tank volume is an issue but it worked with some tricks.

Well if P80se doesn't fit I will sell it and get the same turbine I currently have on another jet I am building - IQhammer 90+, it is smaller and lighter than the P-80 plus requires less fuel.
Making custom tanks of any size and volume is no problem, done many of them for before)

RE: Grumania P-59 Airacomet
After an extremely long building process, my P-59 is in the balancing stage. It had to be put aside many times for other projects. Hopefully it will be test flown about the same time as the prototype out in Chino, California, USA. It will weigh about 20 pounds dry. It is powered by a Wren Supersport. Of all the issues I have had with the building process, trying to get all the components into the aircraft was the most difficult. I had trouble viewing the video as it would stop many times. It appeared no flaps were used for takeoff or landing. Did the aircraft float a lot on landing? My Baby Boomerang requires power to idle turning final or it would float to much. This seems like it may be the same. I have spent many dollars on this so I plan to approach the test flight very carefully. It is done up like a YP-59A in olive drab and grey. I hope to have a photo in a day or so. Any advice would be apprecuiated.
