RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
ORIGINAL: Magnum RC
I have mine coming as of today... . The only difference, is that KMP can ship by Trucking pallet and the United Plane Shredders won't be allowed to touch my plane.... I have a Saito 450 with a Keleo Ring exhaust that is going in it with a 3 blade 22'' Solo prop. We have cockpit kits for these and it will be going in mine, I wish I had some weathering skills to make it look like it has been at the front, but it will look great for the July Warbirds Over the Pacific event in Cottage Grove Oregon. Looking at Kniver flyers build, those huge flaps ought to enable a 30 degree approach and landing. Man, I tell ya, it is hard to go back to the small planes after having large ones. It just isn't right....... By the way, if anyone is interested, KMP still has a few of these birds for sale for Canadians as we speak.

This guy has great pictures of his build and I'm sure if you joined this forum as I did he will answer any questions you have. I never had a g-62 but I hear they are weak for its size and they weigh 5.1lbs. I would look at all options before you buy the Zenoah??

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
The Zen G62 weak ? This engine has been routinely flying Warbirds as heavy as 40lbs for many years. I have had quite a few of them and have one now in my TFGS Corsair in the 30 lb range. You will also need the added weight of the G62 in this application. I have never ever yet had one to dead stick on me. You should further research your decision. One way to do that would be to look in the gas engine section and see which engine people are having trouble with. Just refine the search at the bottom and type in any engine you want and you will get your answer. Good Luck, Kevin.

Here is my TFGS G62 Mezlik 20/10 3 Blade. Not weak at all. This engine is 2 years old never a problem and not once ever been shipped anywhere for repair. Kevin

Crashproof,
Nice vid but I'd rather hear the horsepower over the music
The G62 may have bit of power but the G26 and G20 do not; I have/had them both. Anyways, alittle nose weight won't hurt your baby; land with flaps and you'll be fine. It is better to have and don't need than to need and don't have; that's why I always go with a bit more horses than the recommended. One of my next ESM projects that will arrive just before Christmas calls for a 50cc or a 1.20/.91 glow front/rear. Well, if my rear engine goes out, I want a power house in front to continue without a glitch, and if the front goes out, I want a semi-power house in the rear, while at full throttle and flaps, should/will be enough to bring her home. So what am I speakin' of (look for my thread as soon as it arrives): Do 335. Check it out:http://www.esmmodel.com/inc/Enproduc...?productid=214

I'm not trying to take anything away from the die hard Zenoah guys, BUT why pay $450.00 for a 5lb 4.75hp engine when you can get a more updated, more HP for the same $$. I am looking at the MT-70, 3.15lbs, 6.2HP and $470.00. I know I would have to ad weight but I can turn a bigger 3 or even a 4blade prop. For that matter you can buy the DLE 55 that puts out 5.5hp for a whopping $360.00. I just think the Zenoah is a breed of the past and stay with the new and improved future products.

Why hello mate.
Thanks for joining us just to help with your thread.
As for offering to answer questions, you'll see that many, many people have been doing just that. But join the crowd. More the merrier, what.
Since this thread is quite extensive, you might scan through and see if any question hasn't already been asked and fill in some holes.
Everyone welcome.

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
I just want to comment on a couple of things....
When dealing with a warbird that needs nose weight;
If you are going to be using a loud, 2-stroke single gasiline engine, and going to be placing it in a warbird..............
You have better have something that runs reliable.....
The zenoah engine line is certainly reliable....and powerfull if you take off the power robbing stock mufflers off them.
ALso....Looking at a manufactures HP figures to choose a engine, is about as reliable as OJ simpson proving his inocence by not being able to fit the
black glove on his hand in the court room....
Don't base your choice of engines by this alone....
I don't own any zenoah engines....but have heard very good things about them...
There are also many other fine engines for choices as well....
3w, DA, Revolution50, fuji, fox, BME, os, Saito (gasoline)
The downfall with many gas singles is the short prop shaft....The head hangs in the breeze....
The Revolution has a long prop shaft, and keeps everything tucked nicely withing the cowl....
Downfall is also it's best attribuite....you have to baffel accordingly, or purchase the impeller and cowling...
Engine reliability in a warbird should be very high, if not the top of the list when considering engines...
It's late, and don't know what I even typed....hope it makes sence...
Cheers...

Love the pictures. Keep them coming. They sometimes provide what the manual does not.[:@]
As far engines, I'm thinking of putting a Hacker A80-8 in mine and run it as 10-12s. Should be similar to a DA50. The challenge will be to get those big batteries as far forward as possible.
Check out this man's Corsair build thread. This guy is a master scratch builder. Warning, the thread is long and hours of time will be wasted.

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Hi DB. I was hoping to install these retracts (see PDF) in the ESM Corsair. I know you have installed the factory landing gear but if you could open the PDF and see if they would fit without hitting the spars. On the subject of retracts it has been reported that they will not stay up in the wing with just air pressure since there is no "uplock". What is your opinion. I have also attached a pdf of the manual.

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Hi Tom,
I shall check the measurements from the pdf to the the wing and let you know.
Regarding the Retracts not staying up I know that the smaller version i.e 120 Corsair do not have any problems. I always check my retracts by retracting the wheel for 15 mins and then see if they will come down and lock. I see how many times I can do this on a full air tank. I do 15 mins because most flights are around 10 mins so if they stay up for 15 mins it indicates to me they will stay up.
I hope i am not teaching you to suck eggs but thats what I do to test my retracts.
I will get back to you on the other.
Cheers
DB

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Ok DB. The question regarding the retracts was not in reference to a leak down test but to the fact that the large (a bit heavy) wheel when subjected to the G-force of say a loop, that the wheel would start pulling out of the well. Normally I pump my retracts to at least 150 psi before takeoff. If you pump up the retract to 150psi can you pull the wheel down by hand?

Hi Tom,
Get you now, I did do a little test when I was dry fitting the retracts and when I did bring them in I could not pull them out and that was not full of air. I shall do a test and let you know.
Cheers

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Yeah that was me. Provided we are talking about the ESM retracts for the 50cc Corsair, I tested using up to 120 psi and the gear can very easily be pulled out since like mentioned, they do not have a mechanical uplock. I solved the issue on mine however, go to post number 134 in this thread for my fix.

Dbp7966,
I posted a message in your other forum but for some reason they are not posting?? Did you install the spark plugs on your MT-70 and does the cowling still fit without cutting any holes? I am interested in using the same engine In my Corsair if no holes have to be cut.

No I had not install plugs but if you can hold fire I will test as soon as I can. My Corsair might be taken away tonite for weathering so I might lose it for a week. I shall know tonite. Stand By

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Installed Plugs and HT leads and guess what!
They hit the sides of the cowl. I will have to make some holes at the side to take the HT leads. Oh well at least you know now, I am still happy with the motor
Cheers
