Hey George,

A 20cc gas engine is 1.2CuIn and is a two stroke. It can be argued that you get somewhat less output than from a glow engine but you can easily compare it to a 1.08CuIn two-stroke glow
The Pawnee being called Pawnee 40 (0.4CuIn) which is probably underpowered but there is plenty of reports of it flying exceptionally well on 0.70 - 0.80CuIn Four Stroke (0.60CuIn Two Stroke??
Mine flies on a 0.80 Saito Four Stroke and has power to spare.
Even the smallest gasser would therefore be an overkill in a big way.

Remember, the full size Pawnee wan't exactly a powerhouse. Often been referred to as a low wing Cub

That is what I have been running into, I did look up the saito gas powerplant however I might just go with an 80 Saito.
gas plants are getting smaller but just not that small yet.

You will find there is ample power in the Saito 80 for this plane.
Problem with gassers is that they need to be of a certain size to have a power to weight ratio that makes sense. This is because of the additional equipment that goes with them (ignition, battery, wiring etc). People can argue about where the entry point is but I personally see litttle scope for gassers smaller than 20 - 26cc

That makes absolute sense.
I have not built or flown for several years. A lot has changed in the Hobby since then. I have been easily overwhelmed with what is new and what is no longer out there these days.
saito was then my engine of choice, for this plane it looks like it still will be. In any case I dug out a 1/4 cub I had half finished then stored. I'll be finishing that one first.
Its amazing however kinda easy to see why there is such a lack of Kits on the market these days. I'm a Builder and my choices are getting limited. When I was selling ARF's 15 plus years ago I never thought they would be this popular. As nicely as they have evolved I would still rather be building.

Hi Bauer66,

I can relate to your comments regarding ARFs and the consequent collapse of the Kit market. I also go a while back, I built and flew a Top-Flite Kasmirski Taurus back when they were the "bees knees"

ARFs are getting better and better quality and it's often hard to see how they can be sold at current prices but the downside is that there are virtually no modellers left with building skills.

Yeah Building for me goes back a day or two as well. I remember building control line planes because I could not afford an Orbit radio...........
Back in the day you could Build some HUGE Control line planes. Then when Hot stuff came out Building became a lot more interesting. Throw the ambroids away
My First semi Scale plane was a Goldberg Skylane when you could still buy one off the shelf.




As to a comment on the Price of a 40 ARF. High, maybe but then again I remember buying nice kits for $20.00 Everything seems High these days. Still, Its a nice Aircraft well made with lots of potential. To each his own I guess.

I build and buy ARFs. My arfs are 1/4 and 1/5 scale and a Telemaster electric I like to keep around. My built kits are 1/3 and 1/4 scale. I agree with you in that arfs have given entry to this hobby to people that otherwise would not have joined. Just think IF ARF would not exist. How many of us would be left?

I disagree with "we have a generation of modellers that do not understand...etc." I have seen some of our members kids start and progress w/arfs, and trust me, if they fly they learn to appreciate the difference between a good and a bad airframe:-) Besides let's not forget that some "styles" use ARFS to compete at national and international level. I am not an expert in this subject because it is not my thing, but pattern and 3D pilots do not build their planes anymore either:-) The inmense mayority fly ARFS, and many even have the ARFS assembled for them:-) And I am talking about some of the best pilots in their fields...

Funny! I remember spending much more than $20 just for the glue for my last Balsa USA model... and that was like 2 years ago:-) (epoxy, 2 kinds of CA and a bottle of cicker). I promised myself to go with aliphatic glue for mt next next big bird. I will brake my promise, I know).

The Piper Pawnee is fine with the Saito FG-14 or ant gas engine around 15cc. The cowling space is huge and the extra weight will not stress the plane. There is a guy with a RFGC 15cc gas 2-stroke who specialises in low speed manouvering and the plane flies well.

Nothing new to show really. I have spent these past several weeks doing research for a Build I am about to start. Trying to Find Historical data on the Marine corps Airwing that flew De havilland DH4's During WWI. This has been keeping me from working on much. I will be Building my BUSA 1/4 DeHavilland DH4 as one of these few Planes. So for now the Pawnee is Boxed and shelved for a while.

Great Plane though and It will be alot of fun doing the Pawnee.
