David,
Its not a church, just a garage with nice stain glass windows in the doors. You could call it a church after all the praying I've done to make this thing work. I'll come up with an idea and try to make it happen with perfection. The real praying will come when I throttle up on the runway. [8D]
Thanks,
Kevin

Well, been kinda side tracked with a special project. I have just about got both of them ready to cover. I would say maybe one more week. Check them out.[8D]

Kevin's King is highly modified compared to the kit, (or the original)

Adolfo:
PM me anytime for notes or questions on what I have done so far. A 61 would be OK to make it fly if you build really light. I would recommend a ST 90 2 stroke for peak performance or a 1.20 four stroke. A 61 would fly it and a 75 would be better, but a 90 would be best. Electric would need to be around a 325kv with 6s batteries 3 blade 15Dx13P, the best... or 2 blade 18Dx12P.
Good Luck:
Kevin

RE: King Altair Build by C4 Hobbies (Kevin Clark)
I'm resurrecting this thread as I'm building a KA from the Classic RC Hobbies kit and have a couple of questions for anyone who has experience of the model.
So far I'm going IC with it, an MVVS 15 .90 two stroke with pipe. I've got the wings, tailplane fin and rudder built and as I am just starting the fuselage I'd like to plan the radio installation as I go along. To help with this can anyone tell me whether that long fuselage needs the radio as far forward as possible, or does it work out ok with the radio distributed around the wing bay?
Will I be able to get away with a light glass cloth/Poly-C finish on the fuselage or does it need film to keep weight down at the tail?
I'll add that the sheet on wings and tail is by no means the lightest contest grade which is why I have concerns.
Thanks in advance,
Bob

It is not the SK black one in the picture above. It is the all orange Turnigy from HK. Is there anything I should do to the magnets or any way to check for defects before I use it?

If money is not a problem... order a KDA brand, much better than any HK motors.
How to check if magnets are ok:
Disassemble the motor and make sure magnets are well glued, if there is any doubt or any of them moves carefully remove it and glue it back with lock tite (green) let dry for 24 hrs before using the motor.
Its very important to glue magnet back in same posisiton - or + otherwise motor will not work ok.

I took my King Altair out for its maiden today. I have been afraid of flying the machine, as it took me two years to build. I glassed it, painted with KlassKote epoxy, mounted taildragger retracts and ST 90. I finally finished it just before Christmas.
There was some radio issues and a throttle servo mount was loose. Descretation is the better part of valor, so I packed it up so I can work on it at home.
Below are some photos I took to document the plane. I guess I'll have to wait for the maiden for a couple more weeks.

Maidened my KA yesterday, what surprised me was how stately(?) it was. It flew off the board with three dabs of left and two of up. The stall is a non-event but it does need some weight in the tail too improve inverted. Considering Ipowered it with an MVVS90 and it's performance can be better described as majestic rather than dynamic, I do wonder what it would have been like on the cross-flow 60s of the day.

I am just covering mine now. I have been converting my current pattern planes to electric, so I have a lot of hardware and engines to use. I am powering mine with a YS 140 DZ. I extended the nose another 2" and I am using a hyde mount and nose ring. I moved the fuel tank over the CG, the elevator and rudder servos behind the tank and the nose steering, throttle, receiver and battery in front of the tank. I used carbon fiber rods to build the wings and tail and left them in for additional strength. Preliminary weight and balance came out right on. I will post a weight once I have the covering done and the plane assembled. btw, I went with the barn door competition ailerons and tail. I used an MK bell crank for the elevators and pull pull on the rudder. It has been an interesting project, building it just for fun. I have previously built Jeff's Kwick Fly and Primus. I have a Simila waiting in a box...

Finished and flown what a nice flying plane. The YS is overkill but nice to have. It gives the plane unlimited vertical, which makes stall turns a breeze. I was amazed at how slow this thing will fly. That long wing really works.
My recommendation...... Build One!!!

Here are some open frame pics. You can see the carbon fiber tubes I used for alignment and then as additional spars. You may also note I put everything in the stab and wing (all filler blocks for hinges etc.) before sheeting.
Please excuse the glue mess. I was experimenting with Polyurethane glue on this one. I learned to remove all but a film of glue on the surface to be glued or it will foam out everywhere. Yyou can be sure using this stuff that there will be no voids when sheeting your wings.
