First flight for 2011
We had three airplanes and their pilots out at 12:10 pm after the ball dropped in NYC.
The weather here in Arlington TX was 38F and dead calm.
There were too many cars in the cul de sac so we adjourned to the library parking lot a block away.
I went thru two 750 mah lipo packs which was two 5 or 6 minute plus a bunch of take off and landings with the lights blazinf all the way before declaring victory and retreating back to the house for the traditional good luck black eyed pea eating ceremony.
Happy New Year and good flying to all.

I think you meant 12:10AM, but I got it. I was suppose to fly today, charched up overnight, but the rain came earlier than was forecasted. No New Years Day flying for us.

We always try to fly a few minutes after midnight on the first just to set the tone for the year. Not every year has cooperated but we have got in several just after midnight flights over the last dozen years.
This was Big Bird's night flyer.

If you flew 10 minutes after the ball fell in New York, you were still flying in 2010. New York is in the Eastern time zone, an hour ahead of you.

I flew indoors with a group including rubber, electric and "whip power u-control" at a school gym in Anson, Maine New Years eve until 9:00 p.m. The "whip control" was a build from an old 40's model airplane magazine article and had it's first test flight that night.

New Years Day I arrived at the KVMA club field in Sidney , Maine at 9:00 a.m for some outdoor snow flying. A few more flyers showed up soon after and by 10 a.m. there was a good crowd. It was an amazing day with calm winds and temperatures in the low 50's by afternoon. The snow was real sticky so spray "PAM" was used on skis and floats. The tarred runway was cleared of snow and some flew off of that as well. There were several maiden flights of new aircraft.

JAYBIRD, it looks like your group knows how to have fun with out freezing.
The whip flyer reminds me of my beginning days in 1951 before I got my first Jim Walker Firebaby.

The unusually warm weather and lack of wind made a BIG difference! The weekend before it barely got into the low 20's and the winds were horrendous. The next day there was a scheduled fun-fly but it rained all day so we took advantage and got in as much as we could.

RE: First flight for 2011
We got lucky this year..
No snow thanks to a few warm days last week but it was 25° at the field Saturday morning.
Everyone brought electrics this year for our annual polar fun fly..
A warm Lipo makes a nice hard warmer after standing in a pilot station for 10 minutes with no gloves.

I got in my first flight right around 12:04 am with my night flyer. There was great weather for it. No wind, temps in the mid to upper 30's. Was a pretty cool way to bring in the new year.
