As for them coming off, they come off only when your surface is covered with oil or dust. This is Oracal 651 - correctly applied you have to cut or sand them off. These little buggers hold on....
Besides that your paint coat will protect them as well. This vinyl is desinged for outdoor use.
I'm in the process for alu ones - that means after you paint the surface you can scrape the paint a little off the rivet and that simulates the loss of paint like on the full scale counterpart.

tfarmer96,
Ouch! That was probably the most thorough testing I've ever seen. You shouldn't have done that just for us, we're not worthy!
Did you put the rivets on before or after the priming? Was this on top of fiberglass or the WOW covering.

I second that question...I wonder how many of each rivet style one would need for a Yellow Aircraft AT6 Texan??? Anyone know a good spot to source 3 view drawings that show panel lines and rivet details etc?

no not yet - be patient grass hopper, the rivets will be with you. Let the guys try them out. As of Saturday morning all of them are on their way.
Hooked,
as for the quantity needed, this depends on you. So far the formula is, 1000 rivets are eqal to 300 inches linear. The Yellow Aircraft has 101 inch wing, the panel wing panel lines add up to 369 inches times 4 = 1992 inches. The fuselage adds up to 258 inches times 2 = 516 inches. The total would be 1992 inches.
1992 inches divided by 23 (one row of rivets) = round up 87 rows, 76 rivets in a row = 6612 rivets

I am currently finishing up my Wingspan B17, 138" ws. I am in need of a whole lot of these little dots. Yours are just what the Doctor is looking for, these will be easy to install. Now the big question is WHEN will they be ready. Plus I have to do some calculations and I may need your help on how may sheets it is going to take. Let me know when you are ready for busness. I also like the gas caps, I am ready for an order of those also.

I tried another way to produce the same effect but with paint rather than stickers. I produced the rivets in Corel and then cut a Paint Mask which was applied to the surface. Paint was wiped over the mask using a credit card (it's like spreading glass cloth resin). When dry the mask was removed and the rivets were exposed. I also dropped a little black in the paint so they would stand out.
The results are very good with nicely spaced artwork. The fuel filler was also made in the same way. While it worked well it is sadly not commercially viable because of the design time required to draw the rivets out on the computer.

I know you guys are looking forward to see them on the website for sale. By mid-week all of the test sheets will be delivered. So, I assume most of them will be tried out, at least by next weekend.
I'm ready for cutting, just waiting for some feedback. By that time I have a pricing and quantity structure.

Pilot43, you are correct, the rivets on the P51 were very flush to the wings. I was experimenting to see if the riveting would work, it just happened that the Mustang was the next model I was building.

Ram-bro it is difficult deciding on what is viable and what is not. Remember every kit/plan will need it's own scheme drawing out, which would prove very costly to originate. I work full time on decals for modellers now and I am busy 5-6 days a week. There just simply are not enough hours in a day. Maybe later . . .
I too like to build models but find it difficult to get the time now
Attached pic is for the top wing scheme. 4017 rivets (counted by the computer not me [&:])

I'd love to know a little more about your method and what type of equipment you needed for making the masks. I am a Corel user and can appreciate the work that would go into a template like that, especially when you need to take into account the curvature of the surface too.
If I recall correctly, the rivets on the P-51 wings were flush rivets like the rest of the plane, but for most the wing, the countsink ring around them was filled and the wing was painted silver.

Scott it's a Graphtec cutter/plotter, no big secrets really. Half of the battle is knowing how to use the equipment correctly, and that comes with time.
As you can guess I can't turn up to a flying field with a poorly decorated model. I will get flogged for sure

LOL
I have access to a vinyl cutter, but not sure it can cut small enough circles for 1/6 scale of my current project. But for other projects...
I'll have to do some testing!
Thanks,
Scott
