RE: Bridi UFO Build (all wood)
Here is my method for aileron's, I am sure this is used by other's. Using the 440 rods, set in the links with servo and control surface's neutral. DuBro makes a great 440 solder sleeve, white and gold brass, take you pick. Before soldering up, insert the rod into the threaded sleeve, to measure the depth for the rod. Cut all with cut-off wheel, sand the area's to be soldered, clean with alcohol or your favorite method, dip in flux all area's to get soldered. Heat to allow the solder to flow, using 60/40 or similar. Watch for cold solder joint's, clean up he area soldered. Here I have adjustment's on both end's, secure the 440 nut's final after trimming flights with loc-tite.
You can use the fuel line pieces at link end. Picture's here show Sullivan links. You need to pry these links open, and they also provide a sliding clasp to the bottom if you want to use it. The black DuBro links work fine also. There are other connector's for end links, ball method, etc., for hook-up where there is more offset from horn to servo arm.

Thanks for the pics Vince.
I decided to go with a similar setup. I changed to 4-40 rods with clevises and ball links. There is almost zero play in the linkages, whereas, Z-bends will wiggle a little bit.
A minor setback. I wasn't happy with the spring down performance of my nose gear. I called Robart to see what I could do about it. Doug in the tech dept. told me to mail it back and they'd send me a new unit. So, I did. In the meantime, I can start setting up the control throws.

RE: Bridi UFO Build (all wood)
David, You have reinspired me. I used to fly a much modified UFO in the 80's. I have just had my plans coppied as well as saved as a PDF file. I have also rebuilt the orignal Rossi 61 RE that used to fly it(Bearings,Piston, Cylinder, and Bolts). The plane was sold many years ago stripped out. I will build the new one with inverted engine and as a tail dragger as my orignal was. I just need to sit down now and redraw the nose of the aircraft to take the inverted rossi.
Cheers

Ghost, that's going to be a cool plane. I hope you're planning on starting a build thread to share the project with us. BTW, I have that same engine.
There is an awesome copy/print shop here in G'boro (same place that Dan Santich used) that only charges about 20¢ per sq. ft. for scanning and printing. The problem is they are limited to 36" wide printing. The UFO plans are 38" wide. So, I did a bunch of cutting and pasting in Photoshop last night and got the plans down to 36" wide. I also put the entire fin/rudder on the fuselage.

Nice Ghost... looking forward to seeing more of that!
David,
Irecently installed some 4-40 swivel ball links on to standard Futaba servo horns. From the picture it looks like you are using HD DB hardware on ailerons. Iassume that is a 4-40 screw going through the servo arm. Iwas concerned with the strength of the plastic servo arm and in particular the size of the hole that needs to be drilled out for the 4-40 screw. In my case, the screw just fits into an enlarged hole without cutting into the adjacent holes but just barely.
I'm thinking that a couple of stronger arms wherever 4-40 HW is used might be in order. Any thoughts? Question is, which ones? (Hitec makes some nice arms for their servos but Idon't think they fit Futaba splines).
David.

I really like the Sonic Tronics arms:

I don't think Tower carries them, but both of my LHS's do.

RE: Bridi UFO Build (all wood)
David, You rossi has a different carby, later model, mine has the inflight mix adj. I even still have the Orignal radio I flu with then, thought about using that too pre computer, all manual trim and end point adjustment and no electronic mixing, but will use my new stuff(DSX9). I see you are using 4-40 stuff on the ailerons, Question WHY, never needed it years ago, hasent changed. I am thinking about using twin mini servos on the elevator as you can get them with more power and faster than the JR4001's that we used in the day. I am thinking about fully sheeting the wing and glassing as we used too. We have a printing shop here that charges AUD$5.50 for the copy and scan, only problem is they can only do A0 sized paper about 33" wide,I only hadthe orignal plans, sothey had to be folded to get the scans but that is no problem.
Azzam, I know about the main gear movement, I still have itrepositionedon my orignal plans.
Cheers

Now that's what I like. Lighter, streamlined showing more of that beautiful fuselage. Myf/g Dirty Birdi projectis a taildragger and has the engine inverted. As most I bulid do/will.

Mine came with the in-flight carb, too. Problem is, the in-flight gadget and NV are missing.[] Anyone have an extra? I had an OS #7L carb on it, but now I have a Picco 60 carb installed. It's a Super Tiger clone and works great.
I'm sure the hardware is overkill. I'm just be over cautious I guess.
I like the idea of a fully sheeted wing. If I did it all over I would do that and probably use silk and dope. It's a lot easier to apply that glass cloth (for me, anyway) and almost as strong.

RE: Bridi UFO Build (all wood)
David, As you have done a most excelent build here, I would like to just add the mods that I do if you would allow. The mods to the nose are very minor except for F1. As can be seen from the photo of F1 with mount positioned. Refer to drawing for changes to the fuse sides and the fuel tank floor. The firewall is reinforced with 1/4" triangle stock, the fuel tank floor can also use some as well unless you want to make it removiable. The engine cowl is made up from 1/2" and 5/8" balsa sheeting and carved to suit engine and pipe combination. I will have this removiable to allow easer instulation of the engine and mount. I am having problems uploading photos will try later.
Finally got the photos to work.
Cheers

The Ghost,
That Rossi 61 rear exhaust (with in flight needle adjustment) brings many memories up to surface. I had same engine in a Mach 1 I built in 1975. First I had a Rossi 60 side exhaust (and in flight needle adjustment) with pipe in it but after a year I mounted the Rossi 61 rear exhaust. I had the pipe go through the canopy (fiberglass) of my Mach 1 and I can tell you that Mach 1 was fast. Great engies, both Rossi 60 and 61.

Hey guys,
I have aquired plans for the UFO. Which doesn't mean a whole lot, but I also received a full set of sticky backed templates for the airplane.
I was wondering if anyone remembers these templates, and if I should hold on to them rather than use them?
Brian
p.s. Is using plastic covering on the UFO an issue? I don't see it used much on the old "bullet" planes.
And- Could someone please bring the SPA or similar to Minnesota????? Asking club members around here is like asking for their first born! You get the 40 mile stare.

David (Rainedave),
Thanks for your work on the UFO plans - that is the airplane that I dreamed of making ever since I first saw it in RCM(?) way back in the early '80s.

Mike,
not wanting to reply for Rainedave but he has unfortunately been absent from the forum for some time. I have tried to reach him directly with some things I wanted to discuss but have had no luck.
I hope he is well and will be back with his forum buddies some time this year.

RE: Bridi UFO Build (all wood)
I've always wanted to build a UFO and actually had a glass & foam kit back in the early 80's. Ended up selling the kit instead of building it, big mistake! I've always regretted that. [] This thread has renewed my interest in the UFO and I received my set of plans last week. I plan to order a set of foam cores this week. I might even try my hand at a build thread.
I hope all is well with rainedave and he comes back soon for the finale of this fine build! I'm looking forward to seeing the finished model.

David's excellent UFO build deserves to be brought forward for everyone's enjoyment.
So here goes.
Brian, this thread ought to answer a number of questions that you may have regarding the build of the UFO as well as a Super Kaos.

Hey gang! Sorry to disappear like that. I returned to UNC-Chapel Hill last fall to finish my PhD/dissertation and have not had time to work on models. Plus, I needed a break; the kit thing was burning me out. Later this year I want to get back into things, but I just have different priorities right now.
Thanks for all the interest and encouragement on this project!

David,
glad to hear that you are well and are working toward that PhD. I had heard that you might have been injured and I was concerned that it was serious. Glad to hear that is not the case.
We look forward to you joining the classic pattern community at some point later this year. Nothing like submitting that dissertation after years of hard work - cathartic.
Welcome back!
