F4U CORSAIR RC
I know there are a lot of good season pilots on RC that have a lot of experince. I am looking for some advice on what engine t0 put in my F4U CORSAIR RC for this flying season. I'm not sure whether a 2 stroke or 4 stroke would be good for this plane. Looking for advice....thanks

RE: F4U CORSAIR RC
You never mentioned what size of plane or engine?Type is a pilots choice, they both work very well. As a choice I always go four stroke but I have several on hand. I like four strokes better then two strokes but every once in a while I build a plane that a two stroke just works better. I also try to always use what I have in stock so I don't have to run out and buy a new engine, spending money without reason makes no sense to me. Do you have an engine on hand that would work or do you need to buy a new engine for this plane?

If cost is no problem, I would go with the four stroke every time with that plane. The sound is just worth it, but if money is a show stopper go for the 2 stroke!!!!
Like he said, size matters!

I want to build the 60 size airplane. I don"t have an engine yet so I need to purchase on. Money is no problem I just want to get the best that will go with it.

For a 60 size corsair, you would probably want to use a 91 four stroke to help with balancing and to swing a larger prop with the big round cowl.

RE: F4U CORSAIR RC
If you can a 100 size 4 stroke (OS or Saito) has good power for a 60 size corsair. If your building a Corsair ARF like the Hangar 9 then even a 91 size 4 stroke will be good because they build pretty light. But if you are doing a kit built like the Top Flite, you'll probably need a 115 or 120 size 4 stroke as they build a little heavy. I have a hangar 9 and I've flown it with a Saito 100 and now have an OS 75AX (2 stroke) in it. I went with the OS75AX because I wanted a little more speed out of it.

RE: F4U CORSAIR RC
Someone in my club gave me an old 4 stroke that hasn't ran in years. Some rust on it and looks like it need a good cleaning. I wish I could use it instead of buying one. What can I do to see if it works?

If you could post a photo of the 4 stroke Icould give you a better idea of weither it can be saved.
what is the flying weight of the corsair?

RE: F4U CORSAIR RC
that's a two stroke OS. Hard to tell what size, but what you are seeing isn't rust, it's castor build up. Does it turn freely by hand? Is it smooth? IF the answers are yes, then tune it up and run it!

I have the Top Flite Corsair with an OS .91 2-stroke in it. I used a 2-stroke because it fits entirely inside the cowel. It's mounted on it's side (rather than inverted) to help it run better and to route the exhaust out the bottom with a pitts-style muffler.
Runs great and has plenty of power!

RE: F4U CORSAIR RC
were you going to build a Top Flight 60 Corsair or get a ARF
the Top Flight can be a hand full to build and fly and is a good match for a 91-120 4stroke, or even the new DLE 20 looks interesting for gasoline power.
a good ARF Corsair is the Hangar-9, there light weight 6-8lbs, and the H-9 planes fly really good, a 91 4stroke is a good match for the H-9 planes, I have a, P-40 warhawk, a P-51 Mustang, and the Corsair, there all fine planes there powered by OS91 4strokes

Mrcoolpop,
Thank you very much! Actually though I can't take much credit- I bought it at a swap meet about 90% done. I just had to patch a few holes, mount the engine and electronics, and paint the cowel. That stupid Lustrecoat paint was supposed to match the Monokote, but it's turned almost black now! Oh well, maybe it was a bad batch.
The most important thing about this plane (and most warbirds) is to have a RELIABLE engine! You do NOT want to do a dead stick with it! Make sure the engine will stay running at all throttle levels before you take off! Like I said above, I mounted the engine on it's side because they are easier to tune and run reliably. (I can hear all the inverted engine proponents saying, 'Oh you just don't know how to tune it properly! Mine run fine inverted!' Blah, Blah, Blah!) I have been flying for 20 years, and I know what works for me. I built the engine baffle as directed in the instructions to direct cooling air over the engine head.
So, keep the engine running, and keep the speed up on the landing approach. Good Luck!

RCV90-sp It fits in the cowl and swings a huge prop for a much more scale appearance.
