Got all the servos in today. Everything is hooked up except the throttle linkage, the pushrod I was going to use is about an inch short. I got both batteries mounted and all the switches and leds for the ignition and voltage regulator installed in the dash. All I'm short is the prop hub, pilots, machine guns, weathering and finishing up the dummy radial. I decided to go with a half canopy in the back like the one in this pic. This way I can mount my switches just inside the canopy and my air fill will be under the removable rear machine gun mount.

I had to put the canopy and prop on for a couple of pics just to tease you guys. I found another pushrod and also moved the throttle servo to a better location for my engine. I'll take pics of that later, I already had the wing on when I remembered the camera. In the rear view you can see the retract fill port where I'll mount the rear guns and the switches are semi hidden right next to the canopy on each side.

I was afraid yours might be really heavy with moving all those servos that far back. I did some research today and found out that you DLE 30 is actually lighter than my EVO 26! Not by much but when you add in the ignition module and muffler mine comes out about 135 grams over. Don't be too worried, When I put my first one together it was just as heavy as yours. I had put a tuned pipe in it that was run inside the fuse. It really made the EVO scream but it was so loud you couldn't stand to hear it run. Believe it or not, my short little manifold and straight pipe is quieter than the tuned pipe! It has alot to do with the pitch of the sound. It stuck way back into the fuse behind the CG and I had to add a TON of weight. When I pulled the pipe i was able to re-balance her and trim off 3/4 lb.

I can almost guarantee that if you get her rolling, let the tail come up and get to decent flying speed all you'll have to do is give her a bump of up elevator and away she'll go.

Did you ever do the three section flaps you were talking about? Just curious to see what that would do.

yes i did the three section flaps. i put the center one on the flap switch and the two outer ones in aux 2. now i can use the center one on my flap two position switch. first click 50% second click 100%. aux 2 full flaps. 1 click. probley only use these for show.

Got started on the panel lines and rivets tonight. I got one wing almost finished, I just like a couple more panel lines. I remember how much time it takes for rivets. What is really a shame is once i finish weathering they will be just a minor detail when they take longer than anything else! About three nights of this and I'll be ready for the next stage. I'll post more pics once I get through with the panel lines and rivets. If there is anything anyone else needs to see let me know and I get some pics for you.

She balanced at 4 1/2". I added 1 lb. 3 oz. of nose weight and she came out at 16 lb. 13 oz. on my fishing scale. Even thought I moved as much stuff as far forward as I could it still didn't help much. Once I get my spinner, dummy radial and pilots in I'll double check it and see what I have then. I'll let you know what I come up with.

could you tell me how they come up with the flying weight that they say in the book. they say to put a 2 stroke or 4 stroke in it. they would have to i figure put 6 to 7 lbs to get it to cg. even if you dont put retracks in it and use the fixed gear. and put the servos in there real place. i dont think they could do it. what do you think.

You can read into it what you want but i copied and pasted this from the Troy Built Models website. They have a note where they list the flying weight of the models.

"ESM Flying Weight Information

*The weight shown is for the lightest set up possible. This means no pilot, no bomb drop, one small battery, the smallest engine (possibly a 2-stroke glow engine depending on the size of the model), no retracts, etc.

Most scale planes will require nose weight to fly. ESM has chosen to not lengthen the cowl or move back the wing to non-scale for CG purposes so that the models are as true to scale as possible. Nose weight is not included in the weight shown. Mounting the engine, battery, etc. as far forward as possible will decrease the nose weight required. Installation of a gas engine, and extending the engine as far forward as possible is recommended where possible.

Gas engines are heavier than glow engines, and require smaller fuel tanks, both of which helps the CG issue. When building any scale plane keep all available parts are far forward as possible.

Note: If you have any further questions please give us a call! (941)342-8685"

Almost every build I have found for the ESM planes said they needed nose weight. It doesn't really bother me anymore after flying my last one. I think I'm about as light as I can go and still get the 4 1/2" CG I had last time.

I thought it might be good to show how I ended up adding my nose weight. I melted down 12 oz of fishing weights and made a piece of lead that I could glue to the top of the cowl. Then I just epoxied some BBs into the cylinders on the dummy radial. Once the epoxy sets up I'll epoxy a piece of lite ply to the back of the radial so it doesn't fall apart under the vibration from the engine.

Here are a few pics of my Dauntless I did a couple of years ago. Purchased from YT here in the UK. Was probably the most pleasing model I have done. It lends itself so well to detailing in the cockpit.

Enjoying the thread...keep up the good work.

Got the final assembly done today. I still need my pilots, they are not here yet and I am waiting on my machine guns too. I should have the weathering done by the time they get here.

I might actually take her out this weekend. It will fly without a pilot. I just want to finish the weathering and seal it before I fly. Sunday the weather looks OK right now so maybe then.

She looks good to me. What did you use to make the swing arm for the bomb? I still haven't done mine yet. I'm going to try to use some "washes" for weathering mine. It seems simple but it will be my first time trying it on this large a scale. I think I've got it figured out but it makes me nervous to try a new weathering technique on and expensive bird. No guts no glory I guess. I'll post pics so you can see what it does.
