Default Turbo Props

Hi guys, Iam interested in hearing from those of you who have built and flown some of the currently available "larger" turbo prop airframes/kits/ARF's.... Iam looking for higher speed larger types such as PC-21 etc does not need to be scale either so any suggestions welcome...

Cheers- Marty

Marty,

I had an AirTrade TurboRaven - very nicely built and extremely light - almost a turbine 'hack' sort of model.

The only thing that puts me off Turboprops are the reliability. Whilst I haven't spoken to many, nearly all the owners in the UK I have chatted to had issues with them. I hoped I'd be different - I wasn't [8D]

Cheers,
Mark

Marty,
I'm not sure this fits in your description, but I have a CARF Tucano that I love. It is one of the sweetest flying R/C aircraft I have ever flown. It is a great fitting ARF on top of that. The only problems I have had are the same as other people have reported, Turbine mechanical problems. The plane, however, I can strongly recommend.

George,
I am using a Jet Central in my Tucano. They have been excellent in either replacing or repairing the unit. They apparently got a batch of bad bearings that caused my problems. It is running fine now, plenty of power. BTW I also have their smoke unit in this plane and it works great.

TP reliability is much better now, Mark's engine was an early one. The V3 JetCat is really good, I will be test flying one in a CARF Tucano this week. Most of the problems were with turbine air intake, you need to separate the hot exhaust to the engine intake, CARF were the first to do this with the Tucano motor box. I've modified my AirTrade Raven to allow cold air to travel over exhaust area. A simple baffle is all that is needed.

I too am using the Jet Central TP. 40 flights on my new Kero Start version and it's doing great. The smoke system is pretty awesome too if I do say so...

A friend is installing a Jet Cat V3 in his Tucano this week and after he is finished we are gonna duke it out to see which plane has more power (both are Tucanos, both weigh the same ETC).

Of course, no matter what...I'll win because Keith Seivers is an Old Fart and I am a young, daring, devilishly handsome and will make sure he has a hang over from the night before...just to make sure I have all of the bases covered!

Seems reliability has been the overridng concern with most of them... So what about the Wrens then? have they also been having issues the same as some of the others?? The MW-54 TP is one thats caught my interest...

Whatever you buy just buy two of them and you should be able to fly 80% of the time.............. Sorry couldn't resist.

Okay, now I understand.

YES, it is VERY important to keep exhaust from the intake area. I had zero problems with my Jet Central.

And apparently he needed a survey to find that out. [:@]

Well...I'd call him now and give him a hard time about it but knowing him like I do...he's probably already taken his Geritol and Metamucil and gone to bed.

Test flew Colin Gontier's CARF Tucano today in murky conditions, V3 SPT-5 JetCat. Two perfect flights.

Needs a cockpit and some more stickers. Tiny bit more nose weight (none from the build) and it will be a pattern ship!

Geez, Boli and Paul. You are supposed to be my friends and have my back .... [8D]

I have owned the Turbo Raven and the Tucano. The Raven looks better but the Tucano is easier to fly. With the flaps and tricycle gear, landings are a breeze. Plane flies like a big trainer.

As for the TP engines, I have owned two Jet Centrals and will be getting my first experience with the JetCat this weekend if things fall into place. I won't engage in a religious forum debate on the engines, but if anyone wants to PM me, I'll share what facts I have as I gain some experience with the JetCat.

I do have your back! Otherwise I'd be calling you a French/Canadian peasant/communist and the like.

Maybe if you bought me more club sandwiches things would go easier for you Pops!

I doubt I could do anything that would dissuade you from giving me crap. I do want you to notice how late I am up tonight, though, for an old fart.

I had a Wren 54 TP in a Carden 35% Extra. It flew very well. The seperation of the cool intake air from any hot sources is very important. I made a mistake and overpropped the Wren 54 and did a lot of damage.(Overheating). Once i got the prop size right it was great. Wren had built in a great smoke system ( smoke pipes on both sides) and it produced super dense smpke. I used a Tamjets variable speed pump and Super Dri oil.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpemSYH59Mc

Over all I liked the Wren. Wren have stopped making the 54 size TP.

It is a gorgeous aircraft, flies like a trainer and the whole experience the start up, the sound - even the taxiing is fun !

I have had the Tucano in the living room for the past few weeks finishing it off as the Boomerang workshop is full of builds for turnkey customers. Even the wife commented on how nice it looks. She didnt know that late at night after she went to sleep the living room turned into a workshop !

Nice power with the JetCat TP unit. Its running a 25 x 12 prop. Just got to stick a bit more lead in the nose and build the cockpit now !

Thanks to Dave W for the test flight and dialing in. Even tho she flies just like a trainer I needed someone who was shaking slightly less than myself with that sort of investment taking to the skies for the first time ! [X(]

Colin.

Add 12 ounces to the nose if the C of G is in the factory recommended location and you will be right on the money.

Great looking bird Mate!

Hi Marty,

Can't say it's scale or fast....but my Wren 44 turboprop powered Das Kero Stik rocks!

Check the Stik flying at our latest ANZAC jet meet....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGNxyW2teC0

The airframe is the Bud Nosen 101" Das Ugly Stik built from a laser cut part kit and the wren 44 now has around 6 flights and god knows how many demo starts and so far it's been absolutely flawless. Starts every time, runs like a clock and sounds fantastic with the solo 3 blade 22x10 variable (static) pitch prop.

The turboprop is destined for a 134" span Fletcher FU24 ag aircraft.

Hope all is well your side of the tassy!

Cheers........Rene
