RE: Jim LeRoy Pitts Bulldog - Take 2!
Got the left wingtip done on the top wing today, and then promptly decided to change my mind about how I'll be doing the ailerons.
This, of course, means my order to National Balsa was ALL WRONG. I've fired them off an email...here's to hoping it can be changed without having to place a separate order and pay more shipping. Of course, if it can't, I'll just have to pay a stupid tax and go on with life. *heh*
Going to do the ailerons in a "more scale" fashion, rounding the LE and recessing the TE of the wing. Not only will this look a good bit better, but it should make the LE slave rods cleaner looking AND allow me to relocate them to a more scale-looking location.
Looks like it'll basically involve cutting the new aileron bay, removing all the structure from the old one, and laying down a 3/4" thick wing TE to form the hinge line. Shouldn't be TOO terribly difficult, since I'll cheat a little bit and make the ailerons end at an existing rib. When it's all said and done, they won't quite be scale sized, but they'll be within a 10% margin either way. Certainly not noticeable to any but the most knowledgeable of observers upon very close inspection.
Also heard from RCGuys today, they say I can order the sliding canopy straight from them, so I'll probably place that order this week.

Gee,I wonder what a Great Planes Pitts would look like as the Bulldog II????
What a guy, modelers always looking to help.
I can't thank you enough for sharing that wonderful photo, and your others.
Exactly what I need to complete my Bulldog graphic set!
Thanks again!

RE: Jim LeRoy Pitts Bulldog - Take 2!
It just dawned on me...
Aviojet, are you aware that there were two different Bulldogs, and that the graphics set for both are quite different?
You mentioned earlier that the one on Jim's website seemed very incomplete...though I've not found that to be the case. it's awfully close to the Bulldog ONE, as it appeared in 2003.
Joe's model is the Bulldog TWO...which was, specifically, a different aircraft. B1 was N99MF, B2 was N98MF, which was lost in Jim's fatal accident in Dayton in 2007.
I suspect that Joe, or one of his cronies, (or maybe you, Jason?) has a complete set of vector art for #2. My own set, the basis of which came from the website I mentioned earlier, is for #1.
Hope that clears some things up.

If you'll send me your email address I can send you the artist rendering of Bulldog II showing all sides, top and bottom,if that would help.

Spoke with the folks at National Balsa this morning...they were quite gracious and helpful, and willing to modify my order to include the balsa I'll need for the "new" ailerons.
Gotta love it when people still actually answer their phones and try to help.

Please, your gonna make me cry. What a guy!!
Here's what I have, actually all I have, as far as three views and art. "Vectored" line art is the key.
Got that?

Oh wow, yeah, your GIF there (the second image) is WAY short.
Try here:
That's the one I referenced earlier. That's got vector art (.ai and .cdr) of the decal set for the 2003 version of Bulldog 1 (which is the one i'll be modeling). it's far more complete than what you just posted.
Vector art of Bulldog II....apparently Joe's given the take on that...sounds like it'll cost some bucks. (Which seems a shame, but understandable)
The link i gave above also includes the 3-view JPG (as well as a similar file in vector) showing the placement of said decals, like the 3rd image you just attached. Joe is offering similar for B-II, apparently.

You got that right, one of the best,if not the best looking Airshow Planes I have ever seen!!Mirco and Jim did a hell of a job coming up with such a cool scheme! You can not believe how hard it was to blend in all of that coming off the cowl to match that on the fuse, and we must have had Jims hand guiding us,because we nailed it on the first try.A lot of that of course is Mike Stellerns skill!!!I have had the only one like it,with every thing on it,for long enough!!Someone else get one of these Bulldog II's in the air!!!Be sure and show how well the sliding canopy fits and works out, always wanted to have that on mine too!!!!

You started that one well before Dayton happened...you were the only one who stepped up to get one done just as soon as anyone could have. You did it out of respect, admiration, and love for Jim and what he could make an airplane and a crowd do.
Jim would probably laugh in my face for being so "emotional" about an airplane...but I just kinda think that that connection to Jim rightfully belongs to you and you alone.

That's funny right there.

I'll be sure to post details of the sliding canopy stuff when the time comes. I don't think, from the instruction manual, it's very 'scale" looking in terms of the sliding mechanism itself...but I've got some ideas there.

gboulton, thats a good set for the basic art work on the graphics , the only thing misssing is the sponsers and Jim & Joanie LeRoy on the Cockpit. We have all of our LeRoy stuff done with Brian Zang at www.aerographix.com he has all the bulldog files . Brian I think is goign to do all the graphics on Skips new plane , he does a nice job . if you wanted to go with the basic set , than get the sponers from brian to complete the set ? its just a thought .
Now the big question , who is going to be in the pilots seat in this one ? I have some busts left . and could make you up one , if your not in a hurry . it takes about 40 hrs to paint just 1 . I just did a 40% skip for a friend of mine this last wenter .

GimJoe017,
Thanks for all that and thank you for it. I now have what I need. Now I can use that art and produce vectored line art from it.

RE: Jim LeRoy Pitts Bulldog - Take 2!
Glad to see you guys going at it again. jim leroy blew my mind twice at my home town airshow in stewart florida. I wanted him to come back every year and was sad i never got to se bulldog 2 in action. Jim is the biggest inspiration of what living you're passion really means. I was literally in tears when I found out he died. Jim Is my hero. And he truly inspired me. My greatest regret is never having shook his hand or having a conversation with him. Yes i was a 13 or 14 years old and though i loved every performance i saw. no one came close to jims energy and amazing skill. Rip Jim Leroy.
