All sounds good, glad to hear it. By the sound of the temps, you might need to go to the larger esc when you prop up. And maybe a higher 'C' rated lipo as well. Congratulations! [sm=wink_smile.gif]

Cheers sdz.

The lipo in there now is flightpower eonx 2450 mah 30c 174 amp burst.
I thought that should be enough but if you think otherwise I will take it on of course.
I do have another el cheapo 60amp esc to try so may give that a go first.

Yes, going from a 30C to a 40C can be like a change of props! There can be quite a substantial difference in performance - (well, you'll be able to tell, anyways). And if you are getting 15 minute run times, you need a break [X(] so consider going down to maybe a 2000mah (40C) battery to save weight/bring up the speed that way. I always buy 2 batteries at a time - if one craps out, you have another that suits that particular boat and you can still run. And after a thrilling 10 minute run, if you're up to it you can pop in the second battery and have at it again!

Ok will check out what's available and weigh it up sdz. That eonx was not cheap at 30 Gbp. Could keep it as a spare. Also have 2 1600 25 - 50c nano tech cells but they were more for the 4s setup.

Any recommendations for 40c cells ?

[link=http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=10278]These [/link] should do fine as well as [link=http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=9941]these[/link] which are a little cheaper. You might get away with an 1800mah like [link=http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=10289]this one[/link], but it costs a little more for some reason, so I'd save that for another time.

Cheers sdz,

I was looking at the same cells.

I know there are some nano techs with 45-90 C rating but not in the 2S flavour.

Yeah, I don't know why there are no 2S in 45C? It's a mystery.

Anyone interested in couplers?

Im going to be making mine tomorrow and it wouldnt be bad to make a few more while Im at it...

I posted specs to what Im making a few pages ago. 2mm motor x .098" flex, 2.2mm motor x .098" flex. There will be 4 screws to the flex and 2 screws on the shafts, #4-40 set screws. $10 plus actual ship via pay pal.

Weren't you having Jeff Wholt make some for you a while back? Are these couplers for the Small Bolt? The stock motor shaft is 2.3mm, not 2mm. And the flex is 3.17mm or 1/8 inch (.089, not .098). Research measured and found his to be 2.26 and 3.16mm.

Jeff is busy so I bought stock and drills- Im going to make them myself per my own specs.

As far as sizes, I am making one with geared towards the Tacon motor with a 2mm shaft and one to fit the stock motor. I measured both motors with a micrometer w/friction thimble and Ive been known to measure within .0001" in my career whereas a caliper is only accurate to .001~.003" depending on quality and user. Also note that I am using .098" flex cable, not the 1/8" crap that came with it. 1/8" is .125" also- not .089".

2.2mm= .0866
2.3mm= .0906

I will double check my stock motor again just for arguments sake but when I measured I came up with .0866"

I wont be able to make the stock motor ones tonight as I dont have that drill in the door yet. But at least I can get my bolt back together with the Tacon motor and give it a try on 3S.

Looking forward to hearing about your progress Bass.

Where did you get the new flex and what have you done about the prop shaft / 2 piece drive ?

Cheers.

Ron.

Of course you're right! My bad. I keep getting the 2.3mm (.089) flex on the Tenshock mixed up with the 3.17mm (.125) on the Small Bolt. Was wondering why you were going to a smaller diameter flex (from .125 to .098)?

Smaller flex as its a small motor. It doesnt need .125 flex...

No more 2 piece drive line. I bought the .098" flex and .125" propshaft drive combo from OSE. Assembled with loctite 648.

I think I got a #44 drill coming from the machine shop out back. So I should be able to make both couplers tonight! weee!

I couldn't agree more - big cable for tiny boat. A 2-piece cable is the best choice on a large boat, because long cables tend to shrink under load and the 2-piece system will keep the load (torque) on the strut as the cable shrinks (slips) in the prop shaft. But on a small boat, shrinkage is nil - and a one piece is much easier to service.

Can anyone tell me what the best prop is to use with the stock brushless and a 35 amp. esc. Running from 3c 1800 mah to 2200 mah 25c. Where can i buy them at. I am a plane guy and just getting into this boat hobby. So far i love my small bolt, just want a better prop.
Thanks,Eric

1,002% the stock motor is a 2.2mm shaft.

I put a 2.2mm drill thru there and it fits like a glove! The .098" hole is .098" also, so the flex cable is a real NICE fit. Im impressed.

The 2mm shafts for the Tacons came out well also. Seems to be a little more clearance in it but highly acceptable still.

Of course Im pretty picky on these things. My last career I was a machinist and Ive made PLENTY of bearing journals to tolerances down to .0002" and one job to .0001" So take my slop statements at face value. When I say there is clearance in the 2mm one, i mean theres a .001" slop in it...

Now to get set screws in these couplers.

I have 2 of each available!

Nice work bass.

my custom coupling arrived but had to be sent back as the flex end was too small a fit.
On the water again today after fitting the 60 amp esc, had a good run but was half expecting the lipo to be cool after but it was just as warm as on the stock esc. By no means hot but defo warm. Motor and esc cool. To me this means the motor could take more abuse but not sure about the lipo. I am waiting for some 2s 40c 2200 turnigy to arrive and a set of nylon props. Will try the cells first.

I found myself needing more speed today on the 2s 4800kv setup.
Admittedly it was choppy and the thing was launching off the chop but when it flattened it felt too slow dare I say

Bass are you running that Tacon motor in your small bolt??
It is the 2040 motor what kv are you using??
Hows it run & what esc and battery are you using??

I have been debating what motor & esc setup to go with.
I have been eyeing the 300 watt 3000kv http://www.hobbypartz.com/88e-ads-30...ool-motor.html
or the 4800kv http://www.hobbypartz.com/07e-c-sl-12t-2040-blue.html

Seems like the tacon could be a good option on a budget.

The hull I have is similar to a small bolt it is a 17" abs hydro.
I am concerned about heat inside the hull & not sure what esc to go with the 35amp or 60 amp hobbywing .

I havent got it installed, yet. That will be this weekends project.

Finding these motors in a suitable RPM range is a bit of a task. I dont want to spend $50 for each motor like on E Bay.

The motor is a 2040- forget the KV on it at the moment (and its put away, its early morning). Will look it up when I install it.

Well Looks like I got prop / stub shaft issues.

Took it out for maint this morning and noticed that the square female end has a crack right down the shaft.

Needs replacing for sure but not sure what to replace it with.

Open to suggestions as it seems to be discussed alot at the moment.

Found this -

http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/pro...oct-oc098L-24c

Would it fit the stock strut ? Would need a coupler too I guess.

Thanks in advance.

Yeah, HK has a similar [link=http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=11875]watercooled outrunner[/link] that I've been looking at. They have a 400W version as well. I am using [link=http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=11179]this outrunner[/link] with no supplemental cooling with success in an ABS hull (TearInto) and there have been no heat issues. The thin hull dissipates heat well since the bottom is in contact with water. I use a 60A esc with it, as it can pull 600W if needed.

Rake: Will [link=http://shop.rcboatbitz.com.au/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=7&products_id=108]this[/link] fix you up? They also have the one-piece setup available.

Looks the ticket sdz, shame its on the other side of the world.

I've found a local vendor who is sending me a flex and propshaft to suit the stock setup. Hopefully it will be the right fit.

Changing to .98 like bass would mean changing the stuffing tube too I guess so may as well stick to .125 / 1/8th" for now.

Just got the 40C tunringy's this morning.
