Ducted fan fuel- mix turbine oil and nitro fuel?
Hello,
I think that I read in the forums before that people have made ducted fan glow fuel by mixing 1 gal. 2-cycle 10% nitro and 1 oz. turbine oil. I can't find the thread using search that had this info. Can anyone tell me if this is the correct mix ratio? Thanks.

When I was mixing fuel for my O.S. .91's I would use Redmax 5% and then add 4oz of castor oil to the gallon. You want about 20% oil or so per gallon. This worked fine for me for many years. I then began to buy wildcat Smoker fuel for ducted fans. I am not sure of the makeup of that fuel but I liked it very much. These days I stay away from castor oil as it tends to gum up the engine and leave a varnish all over. Lots of schools of thought on caster vs synthetic.

turbine oil was never designed to be burnt you will quickly get a carbon build -up from a incomplete burn just as it is the same problem in our small model turbines w/nozzle blockages ..... just use wildcat d/f and be happy and it is a cheaper.

Phantom driver...
I run K&B .48’s. I use sport 15% (typically 18%oil) with 1oz turbine oil added to a gallon per Larry Wolfe of JHI. My engines run much better on this than wildcat 15% fan fuel. They turn up about 2K higher and I haven’t lunched a fan engine to a lean run. I use Mobil 245. I can say the .45/48 class engine love it. Additionally, I use this same exact fuel in my 4-strokes and ST2350. Been doing this for about the last four or five years… they love it. I haven’t noticed and deposits, in fact they all seem to run comparatively clean. Best of all I haven’t trashed an engine to a lean run. The only thing of note is that the turbine oil cause the castor to settle out so sometimes I give the jug a shake at the beginning of the day (if it’s been sitting a while), plus the oil turns the fuel dark (almost black). I’ve noticed no performance effects nor has the nitro gone shocky. For what it’s worth…… Craig

Thanks guys, I will try it myself and report my results. My local hobby store does not stock ducted fan fuel. I have to order it by the case (4 gallons ) each time and sometimes they can't order until they have a large order for fuel. I am just wanting another means of having ducted fan fuel when I need it.

Wow, this is a really OLD post BUT due to that fact that I am building a DF right now, I am going to try the turbine oil route as I happen to have some leftover from when I used to have my turbines.
15% sport fuel a hearty 1 ounce of turbine oil it is!
Wish I had of noticed this years ago, ugh!

You should select the % nitro based on the engine you have. 15% nitro does not work well in an OS .91VR DF for example. 5% is best for this engine if it is stock.

I have three gallons of Wildcat 5% nitro 23% oil ducted fan fuel. Its what Wildcat calls Jet A. I'll make you a deal in it. I don't have any ducted fan planes anymore.
