Angel, can you imagine how much it would cost you to ship either the 60 or the shoebox back to the States from Down Under?

Yes, like the kid in the candy store.

Cuba, Land of the old Chevy's

When you get a chance, and all the other brothers take a look in Facebook any thing related with Cuba. The place is in ruins but there are some very nice looking old U.S. made cars, some running with Russian made parts which fit like a glove I am told.
I may take a job down there as costumer rep with the airline I work for once our dear leader says it's OK to fly down there.

Back to Wacos.

Taking a chance my wife may kill me, I bought the plans for the S3HD 1/4 scale. I only hope i cand do a nice job as the late Claude Mccauley. I hope I got his name right.

So i need interior pictures, specially that rear cockpit where the machine gun was. Helllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllp. Are you there John?

Angel,

No go on photos of the S3HD-A (Waco s/n 3954, Cuban Military # 23). The only S3HD-A ever made was sold to Cuba only lasted a short time before it was lost in a crash and the only photos from back then are just exterior shots with Captains Len J Povey and St Orta. I do have some walk around photos of the S3HD, NC 14048, owned by Dick Jackson. The rear cockpit on NC 14048 faces forward and has a complete canopy over that area (canopy is a 3 piece slider) where the S3HD-A has the cockpit facing to the rear and only a partial canopy for the machine gun. With the canopy open over the rear seat it is very windy as I have been there. Only have one picture of the interior looking forward from the rear cock pit and a shot of the throttle quadrant in the rear (it is pretty crowded inside). The S3HD-A had the landing light (it appears to be a Grimes type) in the upper wing, the JHD (similar) had the landing light in the lower wing faired into front of the strut mounts, NC 14048 does not have landing lights. The S3HD-A also had the vertical tail from the YOC Custom Cabin that is different than the tail on the WHD. If you do build the S3HD-A or the S3HD (NC 14048) you definitely need to include the window in the lower fuselage that shows the rudder pedal and control stick linkage.

AnyoneI would like to cover the front and port side of the 1/6 Dave Platt YMF-3 that I am finishing with very light aluminum. Can anyone tell me how to make simulated rivets? Or is this not a good idea?

Hi Guys,
I just placed an order with Balsawoodinc.com for all the wood for my Gee Bee model Y. I decided to build it to 1/4 scale as all the accessories are readily available from Fiberglass Specialties. The order for all the wood including aircraft ply was $103. Very good price for the amount of wood that I bought. I will let you know how long it takes to receive the order as well as the quality of the wood.

I am off work the rest of the week to try and let my leg heal up.

I did the font end of my 25% Waco with 1/64 ply. It turned out very well. The key to working with the ply is to steam it to help form around the curves. I found that if I cut the panel to size then put in on a dinner plate covered with water and put it in the microwave for 2 minutes the ply was very easy to work with. You can tape it into position and let it dry and it will maintain the shape. The panels were then glued down and sealed then primed. You can make rivets by putting down white glue drops with a syringe. I found that thinning the glue about 10% with water works very well. It does not take long to get the hang of laying down rivets this way.

cdbarker,

If you are planning on using roof flashing it will be way to thick (and heavy IMHO) in 1/6th scale. Waco nut has the right idea but his Waco is nearly twice the span and four times (volume) the size of the 1/6th. The only rivets on a YMF are basicly confined to the ailerons, windscreen frame, hinges and cowl, the rest are screws, either slotted or Phillips depending on when it was built and by whom (WACO Aircraft or Waco Classic Aircraft). Restored YMFs may have either type screw. The reason for the screws is to have the metal parts removable for inspections and maintenance.

The picture shows a UPF (NC 29927) with some of the forward panels removed as part of an annual inspection.

CD BARKER.

For rivets you will find that sewing pins will give you a more uniform look, they come in diferent sizes and once you paint, the paint will fill the edges giving you a more realistic look.

John.

I will be a challenge for sure, I just want to make our grumpy old judge happy if he has to judge it. There is an excellent picture of the instrument panel in the National Waco Club Website The aft on with the machine gun will have to be pure guess.

Yep, maybe one of these days the head knockers here on RCU will take notice. Looks like we have finally made the big time.

"For rivets you will find that sewing pins will give you a more uniform look,"

Things called "sequin pins" at your local craft shop, and very similar to sewing pins, but only about 3/8" long, instead of 1".

Well, I had to take a day off from building, to perform a task I have been putting off for ages. I lost my wife to cancer three years ago this coming July[] Today I finally worked up enough gumtion to pack all her clothes away and take them to the Good Will society. I guess it's taken this long to realise that she's not coming back. Funny how the mind works isn't it?

I'm feeling really bad right now, but hopefully my brain will come to recognise that it needed to be done and life can now resume a sense of normality again.

Dave.

Dave,

Nothing much any of us can say will help, but I hope you gain a sense of comfort and peace soon...you will never forget, but your wife, more than anyone, would want you to enjoy the memories and your present and future. God Bless, and deepest condolences.
