RE: The Warthog
It's a blast to play with. Right now I'm beating on it pretty hard, looking for the weak links of the DB-02 chassis. Both rear axles are now bent, so I'll need to find strong replacements, but everything else is holding up well from constant curb jumps. I'll definitely upgrade the suspension at some point in time. I was going to buy a Stampede for this project, but I couldn't turn down saving over $100 and I'm much happier with the 4wd this chassis provides.
Thanks guys for the compliments.

RE: The Warthog
Clever and a DIY, I like it. Perhaps we'll see more of these cool Halo Warthog custom r/c seeing as how the Halo Reach thing is all the craze lately.
Paint those wheels camo green like the body and I think it should look almost like it sold that way. What do you think?

RE: The Warthog
I have nothing to compare it to Krazy as this is my first hobby grade RC car in 20yrs. I'm a 1:16 tank guy, but the release of the Warthog made me take this project on. I've put 15 3600mah charges thru it in 2 days and it runs flawless so far. The rear wheels are wobbly now and I did confirm it is the axles that are bent, but I've pretty rough on it. The biggest thing that seems to confirm the electronics are toygrade is the steering trim won't stay centered. This is not the controller, so must be the servo or other hardware associated with it. It sure seems tough and durable judging by the wrecks it survives and since the parts can be replaced or upgraded, I'd say it's well worth the $70 I paid.
I like to beat the hell out of new RC's to break them in and expose the weak links. This way I can find solutions and end up with a great vehicle that does what I want it to without breaking down. I need to look over the list of upgrades in the Monster XX thread to get an idea of what's out there. Any suggestions to take the spring out of the suspension and shore up the steering?

One is to get the aluminum DF-02 steering upgrade.(recommended think it costs $8 or so)
other one is to get the Tamiya kingpin screws for the steering. the screws they used were too small so they filled the extra area in with a flange pipe and a piece of plastic which has too much play.
If you read the thread all the handling upgrades I can come up with are listed, even the $8 in parts needed to make the shocks hold shock fluid, the lack of fluid is why its so springy
Here found my original post in the xx thread on the shocks, and whats needed
A quite a bit of it is due to the tires actually, not the shocks. Its a very bouncy tire. You can also try some different shock fluid to minimize the bounce from those. There is NO oil in the shocks, and to use oil you will need 8 small o-rings(Tamiya #50597 or similar sized) to install, and Tamiya part #50600(found em for $2.10 on ebay shipped for 6) & 9805486(can't locate this one, not sure if its needed or if the others will work on all 4) to seal the shock. Weird thing is the dampening disc is in the shock... 35wt should improve its dampening and make it less springy.

RE: The Warthog
Finally broke the Hog, but it was due to my 5yr old daughter's bicycle running into it, not part failure. I think that's the longest I've had a RC vehicle (especially one this fast and driven so much) before it was in the shop.
The part that snapped is the wheel joint??? Where the pin goes that the hex spacer pops onto and then the wheel. Is it the universal shaft assembly? Can you tell I know my stuff??
Anyways, I figure it's time to start building her up and wanted to know aluminum parts should go on first and which ones are a waste of time. Since my wife and I do drive it often, I don't mind sinking some cash into making it a solid beast. I would love to make it look like this:
Is it worth it?

RE: The Warthog
did the ball cup break off?
And if you go CVD(u-joint or whatever they want to call it) you will need the following: 2X Tamiya 51008(around $4 a pop), 2X Tamiya 53790 (around $7 a pop), a set of DF-03 driveshafts(or how they are called ''swing shaft'') which are $13 for 2, and for them to fit right a set of aluminum knuckles, (Also might want to get a set of http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXGH10&P=Z For some reason the monster XX screws wouldn't fit in the alum knuckles right)
I tried them with the plastics, and they would pop out. The aluminum pushes the axle in around 1-2mm which was too far for the stock setup, but the DF-03 drive shafts it was JUST right
Side note if you do not replace your diffs internal gears with Tamiya 51008, Tamiya 53790 will not fit.
outside steering knuckle, and shock towers I find the aluminum a waste of cash that will only cause it to fail in worst spots.
Thing is the monster xx front shock tower doesn't suffer the issues the original DF-02 shock towers did seeing they are made out of a more flexible nylon. The original towers would snap in half, and needed aluminum.

RE: The Warthog
Before I reveal my Warthog, Here's my story...
I was browsing my gadget/tech sites when I came across an article about a guy that merged a McFarlane Halo Reach Warthog Assault Vehicle with an RC truck. After that I planned to do the same. but what vehicle to use? I'm a RC noob, except for a few 'toy' RCs. The article did not mention what the guy used for his project. Recently I found out thru Halo Waypoint on Xbox Live that the guy is Dan Sarkar who works for 343 industries, the new guys in charge of the Halo franchise! Here is the link:
http://halo.xbox.com/en-us/intel/fea...2-f6d5723ccd3f
He was using an HPI RS4 Rally for his built. And by the looks of the video has created a few more Warthogs (asI plan to do as well).
Well anyways, at the time I had no clue. Then I ran across this forum where PCSGUY88 merged the toy with a Extreme Machines Monster XX that he bought at Target. Now I had something to work with! I had actually held an MXX during December 2010 considering to get for my nephew for Christmas. When I saw how cheap they where, I went hunting for one only to find that they were gone and not sold any more (March 2011). Did find a brand new blue one on eBay which I bought on eBay NEW for $85 shipped. This was my first true hobby grade RC. I had already bought the McFarlane toy.
Although my project started with a Monster XX, I actually ended up buying all the parts to build a whole new RC, mostly hop ups. So I still have the Monster XX, but it's broken and I did borrow a few parts that I will replace later to rebuild it.
The Monster XX is based on a Tamiya DF-02 and so is my build. My project is still a work in progress about 90% complete. Some of the earlier project can be seen on the Monster XX forum here. Had a lot of help and advise from the guys in that forum as well (Thanks guys!). I planned to make the turret somewhat functional (still in progress). I broke the fan on the EZRUN escape, have a new one ordered. The antenna is the actual RX antenna (work in progress). Will be making Warthog 'hubcaps' soon. Also LED headlight, spotlights, and brake lights. Plan also to add lights the dashboard and center console. Hmmm... Better make that 80% complete.
I will talk more about parts and experiences later, but now here are the current pictures! ENJOY!

RE: The Warthog
looks good
If you want 3rd channel controllable headlights for it I made a simple way that costs like $6 in parts (not counting LED's) that could prolly fit next to the ESC.

RE: The Warthog
I was gonna do something simple at first, like I did on HPI e10 (see pics). It's connected to the RX. But later may opt for some sort of control. Is this the thing you did with the micro switches?
