It still holds true...
So, a while back, ThunderbirdJunkie picked up a Komec 936 (Hakko 936 clone) from eBay. $50 shipped, for a good, reliable soldering iron?
Sounds too good to be true, no?
Well, it is.
After only 6 months of use the heating element is toast. Got 3 motor leads, 6 bullet plugs, and 4 Deans plugs to solder before race day tomorrow.
DAMMIT.
Oh well, whattya do, right?

RE: It still holds true...
I've got a Weller 40 watt and it's worked out very well so far...it even handled my 8GA wires on my Turnigy packs without a problem.
Kind of off topic, but I've currently got Traxxas connectors on everything. I noticed 98% of the guys at the local track run Deans...is it worth switching them all over to Deans? I've not had any issues with the Traxxas connectors as of yet, just curious what the benefits are I guess.

Deans have extremely low resistance, and were the "racer's standard" for a long long time(pretty much still are). They are so superior to the old Tamiya connectors, that most people started using them as soon as they were racing. Honestly, if your connectors don't get hot, or cause problems, then don't worry about it.

All the vibration after a while just like bending a spoon back and forth will break the weld. If this happens on a deans you can resolder it. If it happens on a trxx (big head just like a spoon) you have to get a new one.

I was gonna say atleast it's the perfect time to upgrade to a real hakko...The FX888 to be exact. Picked one up acouple months back and works great-did a bunch of soldering one day and it never flinched. Paid $80+shipping from tequipment.net. Nice to finally have a proper soldering station.

Or just push the metal tab out of the connector with a screw driver. It takes like 10 seconds tops

A good buddy loaned ThunderbirdJunkie his Checkpoint-branded 936 today, so all is well.
Grabbed one of those cheap 60w Hobbico irons from the LHS to hold on to for backup, too.
Also, Traxxas plugs are fine. There are no issues with them. The only reason ThunderbirdJunkie runs Deans instead is because he's been using them for almost 16 years.

Haha, The first website to pop up for the hakko fx888 on yahoo was that place and it was the cheapest I could find. The factory tip is kinda sucky though so luckily I ordered some chisel tips. The shipping was fast and it was packed well to-I like that place alot. Lets see-I desoldered and soldered 6 bullet plugs, a male deans and acouple batterys one day then the next day I did a series adapter for my e-maxx and it performed flawless the whole time.

Does anyone know of a source for a hammerhead tip? I may just have to make one up if I can't find one.

Yeah, Ultra Racing/Tri State was pretty cool. Joyce Park doesn't have an off road track, so ehhh...
The club for Joyce Park is supposedly building another facility.
