Great work guys.... Keep it going!
I'm ready to get the sheeting on the fuse top, but I still need to sand the stringers and formers.

Ben, I used windex and alch to wet my fus sheeting and bent it slowly with rubber bands around round bottles to get the first shape.. I was able to lay it down without splitting so go slow and good luck. I worked late last night to get the second battery and switch in the P-47 and check the balance for a fun fly today.. We had the fun fly but not alot of people flew.. We had 20-30 MPH winds, there was three casualties (Crashes) but I chose not to fly until a better day.. I did get the first outside pics. so here we go.. enjoy and please keep posting..
Thanks, Terry

Terry,
The bottle and rubber band method sounds great, I'm definitely going to give that a try... I wet my pre-cut side sheeting with windex (I'll have to try adding some alcohol next time) and formed it to the fuse. The instructions said to use the plans for locating the sheets but I couldn't quite figure that out. So I lined up the stab cutouts in the sheeting with the stringers and the stab saddle. All in all it looks pretty good so far...
Your plane looks FANTASTIC! Nice job. I'll bet it'll fly just as good as it looks!

Ben, some thing that is not mentioned on the manual is: bring that rear sheeting all the way to the top of the spine at the back.. I kept mine down just a little at first but it needs to be flush at the top to be sanded to shape later on... LOOKIN good there. You're doing good craftsmanship on the frame...I remember the sheeting cut outs to be on the wing plan..but what you are doing may be better since it will be in two parts...The alch in the windex seem to make the wood softer to bend... Please keep posting...Thanks for the pics,,,,,,,,,,,Terry

RE: Topflite Gold kit P-47
Well I almost got the Wing fiberglassed, tomorrow I just have to apply the second coat of resin to the top side of the wing, sand out all the imperfections and then wet sand with like 1000 grit sand paper. Once I get the wet sanding finished I will primer the wing and wait till I finish the fuselage to paint it. Next I will be to do the finishing work to the fuselage and then fiberglass that. I will take pictures of my glass job on the wing on tuesday once I get it finished.

Well I'm a little behind schedule this week, I was hoping to have the wing sanded, bondod and primered, but Ihave been far to busy with house chores to get the wing sanded and bondod . Here a few pics of my wing glassed though.

Goran, Man that looks good, That will make a VERY Nice base for a spray finish...If you dont have anything in mind, I have used Lustrekote By TopFlite in the spray cans and had Super good luck with their product...I wet sand between coats and wet sand the clear after 48 hours for a buffed finsih...Just a thought! Have a great weekend and lets build alot!

Looking very nice Goran!!
I too use to use Lustrekote but lustrekote is only good to 15% nitro and is very hard to come by in Canada now... I switched to Omni AU by PPG. But you need your own spray gun. It is a 2 part Eurathane and once cured (a good 5 days will do it) fuel proof to more than 30% HOT nitro. I tested it myself so I know. Lordco sells it. If you use it you MUST spray at the tempurate that the hardner needs and cure for 16 hours at this temp. I usually use a cardboard box with a 100 watt lamp to heat painted parts. There are 2 types to this paint. Single layer "Omni AU" or base coat clear coat "PPG" Lordco can color match any color even Monokote and Ultracote... You MUST use a respirator as this paint has MTK and is a type of epoxy like paint. Yoiu DONT want to breathe it or even sniff it. I just use the $35 Napa throw away mask...
My sprayer is a $30 badjer air brush with a $50 2 gallon air compressor set at 25-30 psi
With this paint metalics require loads to cover so heavy... But solid colors cover very nicely thin.
In all honesty water based colors from War Bird Colors is your "BEST SCALE" and lightest approach. Not too mention it wont kill you like the epoxy paints can...
Here are some examples of the Omni AU against the matched covering. All the cowels have been color matched and sprayed by me.

RE: Topflite Gold kit P-47
I was planning on using lustercote, I am not worrying about the fuel proofing as I am using a DLE 20 gas engine so the only nitro that may come in contact with it is whats on my hands if I fly may mustang the same day. I think this weekend if I get time I'm going to set aside the wing and finish it later and try and work on the fuse. I still need to get the fairings on the razorback for the canopy, do a few fillets on the stab/tail fin and the prep for the glass. I also need to work on the tray for my fuel tank, my extra choke servo and the batteries along with I need to make 2 compartments 1 on each side on the bottom of the fuse directly in front of the wing mount. I tend to place a switch on each side down low with the charge lead and my balance lead both accesible through this compartment and then have the door be held on my magnets, screws or try and find a latch/hinge assembly that would work for this application. I do intend on eventually getting my own spray gun with a hobby compressor as I would like to get into that type of painting with my models but seeing as I'm still fairly young in this hobby and I'm in to both planes and choppers I have already dumped alot of money into this hobby and I am broke. So I'm trying to get things a little at a time. I can't wait to get this ting painted though I'm getting anxious, I new glassing was alot more work but I didn't realize how much more it truely was until I started to do it, but I will glass all my models unless it requires cloth like a cub.

Jordan, good plan to work on the other wood steps at this point.. it will keep the total project going.. Lustrecote will be great and also after you are done and the clear or color is totally dry (30 days or so to off gas) Apply some automotive paste wax and it will be easy to clean to boot. When you do get around to buying a spray gun and compressor, I recommend you buy a name brand small compressor rather than the $50 harbor freight type that will fail and loose your money to boot. I have a craftsman torpedo compressor I use for construction and hobby for $99 and it has been great for 5 or 6 years of weekly use so far.. The paint guns that are at harbor freight are good for spraying but just for hobby... keep us posted..

http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/ws...406327096.html pics suck but it is a fairchild PT-19\
I'm not sure how waco's tend to fly are they fast and hard to control?

I was planning on getting the hobbico mini aircompressor for $130. Is the lusterkote gas proof?

A good tip with lustrecote! Warm the can in luke warm to medium warm water (and of course shake well...) prior to spraying and you won't get the infamous "blotches" that spit out of the can.
What most people are doing now a days with gas fuel engines is spraying the colors in a flat latex (from the local hardware shop) and then spraying with a clear coat to fuel proof. Flat or glossy depending on the application... They purchase the clear coat from Nelson paints or warbirdcolors. Gas engines don't spit loads of snot like nitro do so you don't have to go heavy on the clear either. The nelson paints and warbird colors are water based. Clean up and reducing is easy and cheap... water!

latex house paint works fine for Gasoline, its the alcohol in glow fuel that eats the latex up,it sprays fine with a cheap touch up gun from Home Depot, I use my nail gun compressor with it and its sprays well,I have used water based materials on several projects and they work well,I work with paint and the lustre coat is nasty stuff, I have a whole box of it and I don't use it any more just for the stench it makes in my shop
www.warbirdcolors.com paints are water clean up and glow fuel proof to 15% as well as being gas proof they also have authentic colors for those who prefer that
