Thanks for your feedback. The dwelling wheels are original , but are modified. They were cut in the middle and filled with a piece made by me, with the unfolding profile. Then I transferred the drawing onto a piece of PET that I doubted it properly. Sheet of paper I stuck it on PET and remained there, as it can be painted without being peeled away. Then I fixed everything with screws that can be dismantled if necessary. Pictured is the design and metric dimensions.

Hi,

Well, I am still going on this P51.! I think I can finally upload some photos however and show some of the stuff I have been doing.

I decided to make a new canopy. The kit one is the wrong shape around the front framing. I used a Brian taylor plan to help with making a plug and had a guy pull a few canopies for me. Unfortunately, the canopy was inaccurate in the windscreen area re the fit onto the fuse and I had to wreck a couple of canopies before I got something reasonably decent. The photos show the "kit" canopy and my new canopy.

Cheers,
Merlin Man

Hi,

As well, I did some work on the cockpit. and Pilot,. I can provide some more detail on these if anyone if interested, but suffice to say that neither the pilot or the cockpit are off the shelf items.

Cheers,
Merlin Man

Default RE: What parts did you use to build your CMP P-51 140? (Build thread)

Hi ,
Here are some more photos of the CMP 72" P51.

The Fuse is very scale and apart from the lower radiator scoop, is , I believe, one of the most accurate on the market. It certainly is better than many of the more familiar offerrings such as Topflight and Hanger Nine in the fuse department.

The wings are not as good as the fuselarge however. They are too thick in the airfoil section and have incorrect proportions in the flap and aileron department. However, I personally don't mind these inaccuraces, especially the aiffoil thicknedd, since this makes the model very forgiving ( as gauged from flight reports I have read ).

I have also replaced the stock retracts ( too short and small ) with the ESM set from their P51. I have also filled in the open wing bays so I can glass the wing and add panel lines/ rivets etc.

I am still tossing up re the power plant !! The plane , as shown in these photos, has a Moki 1.8 . This is overkill but I am thinking I can use an APC. 15x12 4 blader with this motor. This engine can be a difficult to manage clunker however, and I am leaning towards replacing it with an ASP 1.80 4 stoke. Any thoughts ??

Cheers
Merlin Man.

Looking good merlin man, looks like you are going with the moki, i have the asp180 in mine but yet to maiden, the whole project has been on the back burner for the last year, its nice to see some others progress as it will inspire me to get it back on the bench. Greg

Hi,

Good to hear.

How does the ASP 1.80 fit in the cowl ? What about the Engine mounts, much change needed?

I have done very little more to mine in the last 4 months as I have a couple of other models taking up my time. But I plan to get back soon.

Cheers,
Merlin Man.

Looks good. Mine had its maiden flight a few weeks ago. Everything went fine. Landing was easy then. Later on, unfortunately, after about 10 flights, the engine stopped while landing and it dropped down. There is not too much damage - just smaller ones. I decided to glass the wing, but I don't have the time to do it now because we will go on holiday. I will start the project as soon as we are back. I would also like to know whose pilot this is.
Best regards,
Quester

Hi All,

This pilot is a "mixture ".

I had a Blue Box Donald Moore that I bought off ebay for $50. I decided that he was slightly too large to look right in the Mustang cockpit. A little bit later on , I found a Ken Doll figure at a local market for $2.
I drilled heaps of 3/8" holes in the body and redressed it using Donald's gear. I also added his hands.

Gregor, canyou provide some photos and /or info on your ASP 1.80 installation please ?.

What are you other guys using ?

Cheers,
M.M.

Hey MM have a look at post 159 and 184 in this thread there are some photos of my asp180 install, i ditched the antivibe mount and glued with sika a 3mm aluminium plate over the stock ply mount, the install was quite easy pleanty of room. i did add an extension to the intake to stop some of the spitting out the carb throat. with static tests im turning a apc17x8 at about 8200-8300 this has more than enough pull to want to pull the whole plane verterticaly out of my hands. cant wait to get finnished and fly.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply Gregor. Your set up looks excellent.

Your muffler/ header adapter set up seems to allow a nice clean instalation . Can you tell me what these items are and where you got them from please ?

Cheers,
Merlin Man.

Hi again merlin man, the 90deg adaptor was purchased from a guy here on rcu http://rcspecialties.net/products.php?model=RCS14x75/90 and the flex pipe was a bit more local http://www.christiantraders.com.au/i...d=32&Itemid=23 i then had to cut the flex pipe to the desired length and then silver solder the brass threaded ends on to it. for the magnum / asp 180 this is a 14mm 0.75mm thread.
Cheers Greg

Hi,

Well, thanks for all that info Gregor32. Another question re the use of the ASP 180 . What about exhaust pressure ?

OK, I just rerchecked the Photos of your installation 184 and I see you have got the pressure line attached to the muffler.

Thanks again,
Cheers,

Just installed a Magnum/ASP 180 16/10 prop in mine, swapping out an ASP 120, and it is SO much better to fly now.
Not overpowered, but flys as it should.

Yea, check out post 169.
They work great for me. They could use some stiffer springs, and you can hear them bottom out on a rough surface.......but otherwise im very satisfied with them.

Its an awesome flying machine.....love it

Hi Sonnich,

Yeah thanks...I found it after I posted. Its funny how I keep running into other jet guys in random forums and we all seem to go after the same models! There must be something in that!?

What other gear combos are people using?

Craig.

No , I dont have any other props......I only got the 16/10 because my local hobbyshop did not have anything else in the range that I wanted.
I was going for an 18/8 or something like that.

But my 180 is a used engine that I got in a trade.
After runing it a bit, I can feel it needs new bearings.....so they are on the way.

Ill see if I can take some video of it next time.....its still not a pylon racer, but would estimate it at 150 km/h or so.......but it is hard to judge
It sounds great buzzing by low and fast
