RE: CMP paint removal
I would get some 0000 or even 000 steel wool and along with plain ol' lacquer thinner, the paint shoud come off preserving the gel-coat and the panel lines. I also agree (and have personally done so on my CMP birds) to remove that crappy covering. My latest acquisition was the 140 size P-40 and I made sure to keep it in my house rather than my workshop and STILL the covering has started to wrinkle. You may want to check out the CMP Hellcat thread and following along on what Luke is doing - he has COMPLETELY stripped the plane down and done several mods, basic things that can be done to the FW - I also picked up the FW at the same time with the P-40, what retracts are you planning to use?

RE: CMP paint removal
Thanks guy's .
I'm mostly concerned about getting the paint off the fuse without damaging the fiberglass/gel coat. Worse comes to worse I have mineral spirits, turpentine, Acetone, lacquer thinner, and a couple others I cant think of off hand I'll have to test on the inside of the wing saddle and let sit for 24 hr. Then the ones that pass that test will get tried on a wing to see how affective they are on the paint. Worse comes to worse I know raw fuel will do the trick at a very high price though.
So the covering on the wings is not so good. I was thinking of pealing it back to put correct sized ailerons and flaps in. Any body done that and how did it fly? It sounds like I should just remove the stuff, but replace it with what? Then as long as I've stripped the wings of covering what's under it? Balsa? Obachi? Then how about the retract mounts. Are they typical Lt ply plate hot glued in white foam? How does that hold up? I'm thinking if I've gone this far I might as well re-enforce the LG also.
I plan to use spring air retracts with 660 robostruts.

RE: CMP paint removal
Perhaps someone can help me. I have been flying a CMP P-51 140 (with an OS 91 as a power plant) for a couple of years and it has some hanger rash. Does anyone know what paint type and color were used to paint this model. I would like to touch it up but have been unable to match the paint color.

RE: CMP paint removal
CMP uses a cheap polyester resin. any chemical method will turn the fuse to a "gummy" fuse. Just light sand.
Pound for pound, Epoxy resin costs less.
Maybe it's cheap Epoxy resin?
I was always lead to believe that these great fiberglass ARF parts were of Epoxy resins. You never know who to believe.
Here's my two cents, or I should say, my two CMPS.

Really?
Pound for pound, Epoxy resin costs less.
Epoxy resin costs 2-3 times as much as polyester resin.
Maybe it's cheap Epoxy resin?

CMP fiberglass planes are made from polyester resin.

I just love getting to the bottom of things, even if I'm wrong about something.
Right or wrong, here's some good and informative reading.
