Name that plane, newly finished very old kit
Just wanted to see how long it would take for someone to come up with the correct name of this airplane. My dad's friend found it in his attic, partially finished, and I took it and ran with it. Some pieces were missing so it's about 80% kit-built, 20% scratch. The trim layout is a hint as to where the airplane came from. If nobody gets it I'll post some more hints.

Not a Kaos. Valiant effort, probably designed around the same time, this one may have even pre-dated the Kaos.

Don't scratch too hard. Here's a hint: the company was mainly known for producing pattern designs by the likes of Rhett Miller, Ron Chidgey, and Steve Helms. In fact, the trim scheme I went with is similar to the scheme that Miller used on his airplanes.

Yup. Huck got it! Either he trolls the classic pattern forums too, or he's been around this hobby for a long time!

Ifinally remembered a picture I saw on the Scratch Builders Warehouse site. I was thinking of doing the Tiger Tail 4. Anyone know about it?

Nice ol bird - a peach of a model
At the time there were more versions of that basic layout than one can count - good simple straightforwad -
turn the fuselage over - you have the UGLY STICK (or some version of it )
Build a modern very light version of it with a modern radio and it will do the present patterns- maybe not as perfectly as you may like but still good.

Or just change the tail a little bit, and you have a Sweet-N-Low stick. Unfortunately I got my hands on the Alley Kat too far in the building process to be able to take out some of the dihedral. Should be a good platform for my nephew to learn some basic aerobatics though.

The Southern RC Alley Cat was one of my favorite RC models. I scratch built this one in the late '80's and flew it in Cullman, Alabama when we lived there. Had an OS .45 FSR on the nose, Futaba radio and was covered in Monokote. Nice plane with no bad characteristics. Enjoy the photo and PDF.

Thanks, mj. Wish the photo was sharper..it's a pic of an old Kodak photo from the "way back machine" . Nevertheless, it provides many fond memories. And your Alley Cat looks great, too. Be carefull though as it might become a real favorite!

Wish it was mine. I built it for my dad. He used to have one back in the late 70's/early 80's, but it was lost on landing due to a bad battery. He'd always wanted another one, and this time he got it in his favorite scheme and colors! The old one he had was a nasty lime green and yellow. He flew the new one for the first time yesterday, and he's very happy with it. Hard to believe a pile of wood that sat in an attic for 30 years could still fly!

Glad to hear all went swell with the maiden flight and that your dad is pleased. Very special moment here.
