RE: TBM 93
I Have Patti making up A pilot for me at present, the plan is to have the rudder, Throttle & control stick move with the control surface's & have his arms & feet attached to them I was also thinking of doing a moving head on him as well might be a bit to ambitious ..well see.
However Patti has quite a lot of orders to fill before making a start on the Japanese pilot head, & I have since found these pilots (link below) , have been in touch with them, & am waiting on a final price Inc postage...A bit expensive however they look great & if i'm going to go that far in the cockpit department may as well spend the money on a pilot.[X(]
Thanks for the comments guys.
Cheers Steff.

RE: TBM 93
I've been using the grey matter this week trying to think of a way to do the moveable rudder pedals & joystick.
Still going on the rudder pedals but think I may have them sussed very tight as far as room goes for them.
But had a win with the joystick, Had one of those nights where the brain was on fire & sorted out all the problems & am wrapped with the results.
My main concern was moving the joystick in one direction would cause a slight movement in the opposite axis due to two connecting rods working against each other.
The solution was quite simple in the end, I have the elevator axis on a ball link which rotates with the push & pull of the other axis.
Some pictures of the set up... which may help others thinking this way... I cant help myself I should just get the thing finished & fly it !!.
Also will post a quick vid on utube soon of it.
HOPE PATTI Does'nt see what I've done to her Pilot figure, she may decide not to do my Japanese head [X(].

RE: TBM 93
Thought I should mention, I used a bell crank from a heli that is the black centre section, but they are designed to be pushed & pulled from below where as I had to have them worked from the side so filled in the bottom pivot section ( for the rotor shaft & fitted a ball for a ball link assembly I then used an elevator control rod hinge which was a very tight fit on one of the bell crank Ball links, this was glued in place & gave me the attachment point for the kwik link.
To get the second axis I then fitted the bell crank into some cut & shaped PVC tubing with washers & bushes to allow it to pivot.
The idea was to keep all the links as close as posible to the pivot point to elliminate one effecting the other.
Cheers Steff.

A got the pilot figure from Patti, she is doing a Japanese pilot head for me but sent me the pilot figure so I could get the cockpit all sorted & measured up.
I have attached the link to her thread in the RC scale section ,you could get in touch with her about supplying a body they are great people, very helpful I'm sure she would help you out.
All the best Steff.

PSJDBF,
Man, that is nice work on your Zero. You will have a very nice looking and flying aircraft. Mine is stock, nothing special to look at but it flies so nice. I am sure you have read through this thread and know the extra things you need to do like reglue all the joints, reinforce the wing hold down plate, gear blocks, axles etc.
My big problem now is my canopy is cracking and is need of constant repair. Called Troy Built and since the plane is dicontinued they no longer have them available. I keep adding clear tape to it. Was thinking perhaps someone else sells a Zero close to this size and perhaps that canopy might fit.
Please let us know when you get this baby completed and test flown.
Regards,
John B.

RE: TBM 93
Thanks for the Kind words John, Yeah I've been through this thread quite a few times & have changed the axles reinforced the gear blocks & adding lots of glue & glass as I go however one I did miss was the wing mounting block so thanks for bringing that to my attention.
Maybe I should look for a replacement canopy now just in case as if it's discontinued they will be near on imposible to get .
Today I finished my moving rudder pedal mod & installed my cockpit floor, next will be the side walls then I can paint the cockpit interior which will be another big step forward.
Cheers Steff.

Wingspar,
Did you order your canopy from Troy Built? Just checked there website and it says they out of stock. I called them a couple of months ago and they told me they were no longer going to have them. I will call them again tomrrow anyway.

John

PSJDBF,
Man, can't wait to see your completed Zero. You are going to love it. I've been flying mine now for two seasons and the Zero is a welcomed 'target' for the Warbird fly-ins here in the NW. I just wish I had a wingman. Anyway here are two more pictures of my Zero from a recent fly-in. Thanks to JohnVH for these beautiful pictures.

RE: TBM 93
Really nice pictures, your Zero looks awesome in the air...do you get to chase them around at all or do you have to play the baddie all the time ..Ha.
From memory you have the G62 with spring starter & have your CG set at 6'' at the outer wing joint spar any mods or things you did or would change ?.
Thanks for posting the pictures they certainly help with the motivation when it's lacking.
Cheers Steff.

Yea, I just Troy built a call. I quess they had some in the back. It should be arriving in the next day or two along with a new spinner that caved in on a nose over.
The canopy is very light and easily damaged especially when the model flips on it back due to my dumb thumbs. I'm so glad that I reinforced the entire cowl with six ounce fiberglass cloth. Mine has been nosed over many times, landed in four foot weeds, had the gear rip out of the wing twice. None of this has resulted in the slightist damage to the cowl.

RE: TBM 93
I am thinking of buying thr YT International 91" zero. Can you tell me is this the 63" fuselage or the 61" version? I understand YT International gets it from the same factory as TBM. Also, they told me they don't stock the retracts anymore. What retracts should I buy for it?

RE: TBM 93
The Zero I have is the extended nose version so would be the 63'' I would imagine.
As far as retracts go you could try seirra gaint scale, the retracts that were available for the Zero would be for their Mustang as well I would imagine, this is my first plane this size so I,m a little unfimilar with whats available out there for this sized model, perhaps some others can chime in & help out with this one.
Let us know if you acuire one.

RE: TBM 93
Been trying to make some clothing for my Pilot , used some 1/6th clothing & made some extensions for the 1/5th pilot figure looks good enough for me , Patti has given me a pilot head to keep me going till she can do a Japanese head, I have had a go at trying to make him look japanese however my artistic skills are some what limited... ( I think I have a cross between an asian & polynsian ) also finished the rudder pedals & have added some framing/ribbing to the cockpit side's.
Have also made some mounts for the Exhaust exits... to be fitted up this week hopefully.
Cheers.
P.S. any hints on painting faces MORE !! than welcome.

RE: TBM 93
Well my Pilot is finished for now, Patti is going to do a Japanese pilot's head for me when she catches up on her other orders etc ( a very busy lady ).
I think he has come out looking pretty good & I'm happy with the results plus the overall weight of him is fantastic, now the throttle set up & the rest of the side detail on the cockpit needs to be finished !!.

RE: TBM 93
Called Troy Built and I was able to order a canopy. However they were out of stock so it is on back order. No big deal as the one I have will make it through the rest of this flying season.
Got some nice flights on my Zero this last weekend at the Northern Alliance Miltiary Fly in in Owatonna, Minnesota. There is a thread for this event in this forum and on the third or fourth page is a shot of mine just after touch down. I have been landing with full flaps and been having a blast flying this plane.
After the event noticed my gear blockls are getting loose. Man I have reinforced these things quite a bit. Looks like I will need to work on them some more. Been setting the ship down pretty gently to not stress out the blocks or gear. Oh well.
Regards,
John B.
