Well we are only just over 1000 posts away and rustler thread has been around 4 years longer then this thread....Could happen..lol
We should take it easy on the Rustler forum guys. They need all the help they can get.

Its a stock brushless ESC, with a 2S 5000 mah 30C venom battery.

Also the motor and battery stay within good temperature. Motor is at 140-150 tops, and the battery never even hit 100. This is all after about 5-10 minutes on various surfaces. mostly dirt and grass in a draught.

Isn't redcat an off brand clone company?  This thing looks like a frankenclone.  Lots of similarity to the firestorm.  I never heard of this truck until today.  I would buy a storm over it.

New or old model storm? I've heard the new ESCs get got. Do you have the firmware up to date?

I would assume its a new model, I just bought it a few days ago.

I have no idea how to update the firmware, or that it was even possible. Does it come with a USB cable?

I don't know much about that truck, but Darkside VR in here bought one recently and is having good luck with it.  There is an optional link that allows you to program the ESC and update the firmware.  There are two castle products that link, a USB adapter and a field card that acts as a computer interface and HPI has their version of the USB adapter which is essentially the same thing as castles since castle made the esc.

This is the part you need to hook it up to your computer, from there you'll be able to update the firmware and make a myriad of other adjustments...

Don't buy the HPI one, it's 15 bucks more and is exactly the same. The castle one will do just fine.

Other than updating the firmware, could there be any other reason(physical)that could cause the ESC to heat up?I almost had it it 180F today. It melted the glue that held it on.

None physical that I know of, generally with these things it's something deep inside.

this really sucks, after about 5 minutes of bashing the temps are at least 170F. Although it has been 100F everyday, in the sun. the temps have melted the glue holding the ESC in, and nothing seems to hold it in, its that extreme.

I cant run it with the body on, because the temps are just insane, so theres a lot of damage to the shock towers and such. Also, one of the wires attached to the motor is damaged and you can see the frayed wires. I used some electrical tape to cover it, and prevent more tearing, but it melted right off. Any suggestions?

what's your exact setup? gearing, battery, motor KV, tires, running conditions? if all this is pretty much stock, then it sounds like to me your ESC is deffective, and isn't cooling properly.

My guess is there is an ESC problem that is undiagnosable.  All you can do is ensure you have the latest firmware uploaded through the link.  How frayed is the wire?  I wouldn't recommend running any fray wires with such high currents, thats asking for a source of resistance.

An outside chance is that you have a bad battery that isn't discharging fast enough causing 'rippling'.  Rippling is when the batteries are not providing sufficient current to the batteries on the charging portion of the cycle (half the phase is charging, the other half is discharging)

Usually when this happens the capacitors in the ESC get hot really quickly and blow up but in a very minor case of rippling you would just build heat up.  Is your battery new?  Any chance you bought a lemon battery?

If you only just got the truck, I'd be contacting HPI.

The above was a joke...lol

As most of us have learned a 4600kv or 5700kv with 19/87 gears and 3s lipo will get you 50 to 60 mph and you really cant do much with any more then that.

Good one, Red.  I was fortunate to read the posts in reverse chronological order.

sy: The truck starts to become very difficult to drive when you get into the 50's.  We are mostly bashers, though, and super high speeds aren't as big of a deal.  Whats your interest in high speed and what do you plan on doing with the truck set up that way?

Everything is stock basically, except the battery. The stock battery is a POS, it wont even run the truck.

I have used almost 4 different lipos, including a 3S. It always heats up pretty hot. Im pretty rough on my truck, between running it up and down my drive way at 35 MPH, to full on donuts in the dirt, then jumping it a few feet on the grass/dirt, all the while its been flipped 5-6 times in the past 2 minutes, and done countless cartwheels.

I'm very rough on it, but thats why I bought this, and not the rustler, for the purported durability.

Nitrorob:I am not quite sure I understand this "Rippling is when the batteries are not providing sufficient current to the batteries on the charging portion of the cycle (half the phase is charging, the other half is discharging)
"

Do you mean that the LiPo is proving sufficient current to the ESC, and providing a wave of insufficient current constantly, and causing stress on the electronics?

if your complaining of heat issues when running 3s, then you have nothing to complain about. it should run hot on 3s. if your running 2s or below on a stock truck, heat shouldn't be a issue. call HPI.

I am not sure you understood me, I 90% of the time run one of my 2S packs. I have ran it with a 3S, and the temps are excatly the same. I understand that it is to be expected with a 3S, but definitely not with a 2S.

I'd love to attribute the high temps to the recent heat wave, but I am not sure I can do that :\

if its stock gearing and tire/wheels on 2s thats getting you these extreme temps, then call HPI, it should not be doing that.

I havent changed a thing except for the batteries.

I just dont want them to tell me to send my truck into them, as that will cost me shipping, and I'll have to wait at LEAST 3 weeks, on a truck I JUST bought.
