Default Slash 4x4/sidewinder/5700

Is anyone else running this combo in a slash 4x4. I'm running a 13/54 on 2s 5000mah. my temps after 12 mins running are about 153 degrees and that is with two motor fans.. But that is with the timeing slowed down and running at 80% max speed. I just feel I am cheating myself out of some crazy power. I do have a 11t and 12t pinion on the way. By the way I race this truck, so I need to be able to depend on that temp staying low. I would imagine the temps will be fine during a 7 minute qualify and probably good for a 10 min main..... But I want to get some of that 20% back without burning it up.

anyone else running this combo set up secrets would be great. I read in rc car action that matt higgins has a rustler with the same combo running 120 degrees......

I would look at getting something with a lower kv . That motors just a tad small for a 4x4 . IMO you cheating yourself be using such a high kv and gearing lower and lower to keep temps down . Maybe check out the 2400kv ,3800kv mambas or maybe that new Losi 2800kv motor . Tekins new sc motors look nice . I would say look at the hobbywing 2700kv 550 , but since you race it may not be race legal depending on your track rules .

Unfortunately there are no setup secrets. The Rustler is lighter and 2 wheel drive, so it will run cooler. Setup for the same power and top speed, that motor/ESC combo will run much hotter in a 4X4 Slash than it will in a Rustler.

I run the CC4600kv combo in mine...I race it all the time. 11pinion/54spur. and that as high of kv's i would go in that truck.. a 550 size motor is what i'd like to run. but they're a little pricey. I was run n the traxxas brushless setup. but switched ,... so i could program the esc better(good choice)..but found i had to gear it down just a bit, wen i switch over to the CC..... my 4600 does run realy good though about 158 deg. (in the mains,) on the motor and pretty good run time on the batterys. When i ran the the 13 pinion. it was super fast on the track, but 178 temps and realy short run time. so IMO get a lower kv motor you'll b happier.

Default RE: Slash 4x4/sidewinder/5700

Thanks guys. I think I knew the answer all along. but wondered if there was anything else I could do here. the 5700 at full GO is just crazy sick fast.. but temps are high to.

Now heres a question. Running the 5700 at 80%....... is that kinda just like running the 4600? so to speak? I really don't need that top speed on the track, i would just like to have it in my hand coming down to the last laps ha ha ha.

BTW the rules at the track are that there are none . It's SC 4x4 open class.

I think for now, because I am off work I'll use this motor and gear down another tooth or two when my pinions come in... then maybe i'll see if I can set the timing back to normal and maybe if I get lucky depending on temps go up on max speed %.

I do still have the stocker motor, actually two stock motors, I just finally burnt the vxl esc. I will though keep an eye out for a 4600.

One more thing, does punch control add to temps in any way or is that only a handleing feature? I have the punch set down some and it seems alright but I may bump it up just a little.

I'd actually like to pick up a couple motors with differant turns (10t, 9t 8t) and save the settings for each so that at any given time, I'm good to go. Loving the adjustment with the castle link though.

Also, let me say, my brother is running a 8.5t novak with no heat poblems at all. I think he has a 15/54. I got to stay faster than him LMAO. I got him by about 5 seconds per qualify. we're pretty much back and forth.

Thanks again guys.

i ran a novak 10.5 in my 4x4, but i ran a 10T i think? it was geared LOW. i was losing on the straights but i never got above 130. toss it in and practice some laps.

i have since switched to a 6.5 550. i can run 17t with that motor.

See I was running a 16/52 on the stock motor and that had really nice pull. But my esc crapped out on me, that's why I put the CC combo in. I may even drop that motor back in and gear it back up. I still have to run this 5700 at the track.... I might pick up a CC short course system over the winter and drop in. There are only a couple races left this year.

Is this a 1406 or CM36? If it's a CM36 that motor won't last long in that truck when geared for performance.

You would be much better off with a 1410 3800kv. That motor makes torque! I have it in mine, since I have the Sidewinder SCT combo, and it rips the Velineon to shreds I tell you!!

It's a CM36. So for now should I put the Vxl motor back in it and adjust the ESC back and go from there. I'm also looking at the ez runs to. Might pick up a couple for spares.

Unless it's a 4 pole motor, you really need a 550 can in the Slash.

Now how do I find that out? Even still the problem remains that I have to take so much power away from it in order to run it. Right now I'm laid off so just going out and buying isn't quite an option. I'm gonna drop the Vxl back in and gear it back to what I was at before. If I save enough pennies maybe I'll pick up something nice in the off season. Running a stock traxxas system in an open class doesn't get you many wins. I'm thinking 8.5 turn or so.

WAYYYY to much KV. High KV motors lack low end torque also adding to your problem. I predict you will see smoke soon!

Same place as stock electric guy... but I had to make a plate (plexi glass) drill holes in the plate to mount to the old spot and tie wrap the esc in.

I was out at the track saturday and then at another on sunday. temps on the 5700 there only about 140-143 degrees. So, every thing went fine on the track.... However I did find a castle sct system on ebay for a good price, so that is on it's way. I was actually able to give a bit more performance back to the motor with the castle link saturday night.. went from 80% max speed to 82% and I think I can afford 85%

I love this though, the fine tuning you end up doing just to get that little bit more out of it. On the long straight away my brother would take me by only half a car length. We're so close in racing it's not funny and our trucks are 100% differant now. Last year in 3 qualifiers he and I were only 2/100 of a second apart and we go back and forth all the way around the track. I gotta say though. Sway bars have made the biggest differance this year over last, by far.

I have the 3800 sc system put in now, 14/54 gears and running only 100 degrees Max. It took alot to get it that warm. And....... OHHHhhh the torque!! Hmmmm this is awesome. I am where I want to be now..... I want to run a few more batteries through, do a little this and that and I'll be ready to go out and kick some SC-@$$.

Thanks guys.... The 5700 is going back home to the on road.
