Default DLE 30 and 55 Cylinder Temp?

What is the operating temp range for the above engines?

Temps outside have been around 95-100 degrees F recently and want to make sure I am not overheating them as they are both developing much more power on the Stihl HP ultra 50:1 mix(head temps are around 265-280)

What do you think?

If the temps you posted are averages over the duration of a flight with readings taken with a thermocouple attached to the back of the cylinder between the top two cooling fins or at the base of the spark plug, it's perfect. The engine is just getting warmed up at about 210-220F, keep high temp peaks 300F or below, damage starts to occur at about 310 and above. Damage from overheating is accumulative, cooling down does not heal the damage, subsequent overheating adds more damage.

If the temp readings are taken with an IR temp gun shot through the front of the cowl after landing and taxiing back to the pilot then the readings are useless and most likely very inaccurate. You must have in-flight telemetry or a data logger mounted onboard to get accurate and usefultemperature information.

Well I used a Venom 601 high temp monitor earlier this week, not as easy to use as telemetry, which I don't have yet, but I think it was accurate readings, highest temp was 278 on DLE 30 in 3DHS Slick and 269 on DLE 55 in a EF Yak (baffled) outside temps were 92-96 F.

I'll bet that was hard to do. How did you manage to get that temp gun to hit the right part of the cylinder on the fly by?

I would think you're good to go.

Now go outside and play.

Tried that TOM, wasn't very accurate... actually used an onboard temp monitor that records the highest temp had to remove and replace cowls to install wrapped sensor wire round the cylinder above crankcase and then velcroed monitor to bottom of motor box, not very elaborate but I had what appeared to be consistent readings

Actually have flown every day for almost two weeks, took today off to clean, iron out wrinkles, and wax the planes for this weekend, do some housework and make sure my temps were OK, by the way what do you think of the Stihl HP Ultra oil 50-1 in a properly broken in DLE? It's like my engines have become supercharged with extra power!

If your not at the top of the cylinder with your sensor, your readings will be very very low. Follow the Jedi's mounting instructions and try again.

Had a friend with an early telemetry system. He attached to the crankcase and cylinder mounting bolt. He was reading temps of 125 to 135. The two real heat info numbers are at the exhaust gas and the top of the cylinder.

One fin down from the top, tight to the back of the central cylinder, works well for wrap around sensors. Ideal is under the spark plug but those types usually break pretty quick.

If a case ever gets hot (>180-200) one needs to re-think thier choice of fuels and timing, or check for an out of alignment crank and bearing.
