Thanks Billy!
There are some tire tracks going into the brush from the airfield access road. I ventured onto it with my Dodge Ram, but it is only 1WD. I got maybe 100 yards, and it was getting really rough and soft. I had to turn around, I knew I was about to get stuck. A lifted 4WD would be awesome in a situation like this.
Thanks Billy!

Billy if you don't get it let me know I'll look too. I'll head out later in the late afternoon.

Which cement pad were you at when it went in?

Thanks Mike!
I really would not expect anyone to go looking. That ground is tore up from being plowed many years ago and now that gnarly brush covers it all.
I went into it just north of the lekky area twice in the last couple of months to recover two large airplanes and I almost thought I wasn't going to make it out, lol. I just can't handle that kind of terrain well anymore.

General questions about the field. What is the rectangular section of asphalt there for? Was it ever used for some specific reason? And what are all those rectangular concrete pads on the opposite side of the runway used for or were used for?

That rectangular section is/was for the Pylon racers. After launch thats were they stood clear of the runway.
I do not know what those other concrete pads are for.

They are for pylon racing. The original design of the airfield was driven by the needs of pylon racing. It was a huge part of the activities back then. It may become more prominent at the basin if gas and glow gets banned at Whittier Narrows.

I have all the equipment. A large gas heli that can lift up to 15 lbs and a first person video camera with goggles. Possible in a case where the brush is too high.
I could start my own recovery business at the basin

I think I have found the reason why the plane went down. It looks like the ESC got way hot, and the motor wires unsoldered from the ESC. This was probably due to a failing battery, which concurrently caused a radio shutdown.
